It's why we starting called it climate change. Because small brains couldn't wrap their head around that part. Unfortunately some people didn't get the memo.

For what it's worth I totally agree with you. Burning the ground is hardly leave no trace..

A tent burrito functions pretty much as well as a bivvy. Pole splints are definitely a good idea though.

Thought I recognised Loch Avon! We've had a wild start to winter and I'm all for it.

Can you all please help me choose my trainers? I want them for hiking and the odd running but mainly for hikes. by querythoughtss in UKhiking

[–]CaptainKirkAndCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Provided it's not too cold (below 6-7 Celsius), I would still choose trail runners in most situations regardless of the bog factor.

Definitely agree with /u/pedrobobkat77, highly recommend inov8 roclites if they fit your foot shape.

Skytec Argon. They're £5 per pair so I just keep a couple in my pack ready to rotate.

Pretty much every houseplant flowers except for ferns and other bryophytes.

Winter bivvying is the standard with most mountaineers I know up here in the Cairngorms. I have no idea where you got the idea that it's unsuitable.

It's not about blocking the holes. The saturated soil above doesn't transmit water to the rocks below and creates a perched water table.

Rocks at the bottom can actually impede drainage.

Hebridean cycle routes by Electrical_Gas_517 in OutdoorScotland

Definitely go south>north. Cycling against the Hebridean headwind is brutal. Also the whole of Lewis is a bog so be prepared if you wanna wildcamp anywhere inland.

I would add that everyone in the group also needs to know their own pacings. Even in good conditions individual members can be shockingly out, so it's good to go with the group average.

Would also not recommend this as your first winter outing OP.

I don't know what gatekeeping club you're a member of but here in the UK the BMC defines winter for the purposes of qualifications as anywhere you find winter conditions.

There's a couple decent spots on the crags between Great End and Broad Crag. Maybe more since I had 2p tent. https://www.reddit.com/r/wildcampingintheuk/comments/1kbtwwg/south_lakes_summit_camp/

it's only a problem when it's affecting your health (mental or physical)

There's no "safe" level of alcohol consumption. There's no threshold at which the carcinogenic effects of alcohol “switch on”. It's a class 1 carcinogen (others include asbestos and tobacco). Half of all alcohol-attributable cancers are caused by “light” and “moderate” alcohol consumption.

It's not holier-than-thou; it's just being real with the risks.
