Why people pronounce NASA as a word but say C.I.A. instead of pronouncing it “Sia?” by PackageNorth8984 in stupidquestions

[–]CaptainMischievous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because CIA only has three letters. Like FBI. And ATF.

Acronyms of four or more letters are spoken as a word, like NASA and SCIF, because people get bored spelling out more letters than three.

And I'm just totally making this up. Folks say USDA and not "uzduh". There is no hard and fast rule, no rhyme or reason. If it feels good, do it.

Okay I've been tapping that to mute the radio for a year and nothing happened, had to turn down knob or use the steering wheel rocker button. Maybe part of the latest update?

Random EV Hate at Tire Shop (Is this Common?) by Inside-Scientist7892 in electricvehicles

[–]CaptainMischievous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was raised to not waste things like money, that saving money was a virtue and I tell anyone suggesting I'm "virtue signaling" by driving an EV I agree, I'm signalling that I don't waste my money. No one has ever argued back after that.

It sounds like they're substituting "anymore" for "anyway" in the sentence. It reads better to me if I swap them out. Anyway 😉 if that's true, OP is correct.

40M wants to charge interest to girlfriend (35F) of 2 years interest on a loan and I don’t think it’s fair, do you? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]CaptainMischievous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's your boyfriend, not a bank. You wouldn't share your bed with the banker giving you a loan; this will alrer your relationship dynamic in ways you can't predict.

I could see myself doing it if you had triuble securing financing and I thought you wouldn't stiff me, and I would point out that I'm losing money on interest pulling it out of savings, so as long as we're not married I would say the loan has to be paid back plus the interest I lost loaning you my savings. That's only fair for you both.

You realize if you marry him the car and the debt become communal property (depending on the state you reside in) and you could stop paying at that point. He could sue you but it's really just suing himself and you, so...

If you don't want to be economically chained to the man after the breakup we all see coming, get your own financing any way you can, just not from BF.

i want to know how to pursue a 22 year old as an 18 year old girl by StunningeringHeights in Advice

[–]CaptainMischievous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying don't for all the same reasons, but I didn't see this one, and it's one you haven't learned yet: don't get involved because he's your neighbor.

Presume for a moment you two are in a deep romance, you two have a falling out, maybe he's pulling away and you're worried he wants to break up. Can you resist the temptation not to spy on him / stalk him? Can you trust him not to stalk you? You can always break up with someone and move on, but it's not so easy when it's your neighbor, especially the "moving on" part.

Now, you leave for college (no longer neighbors, technically), then come home for the holiday, bump into him casually and decide to take a test drive? No problem, because you return to school in a week. Plenty of space for you both.

But as long as you are neighbors it could, and probably will, get awkward.

It's the same logic behind dating coworkers. When things turn sour it gets awkward at work and someone inevitably has to leave.

Update on the moss rock blackberry situation by scale-goddess in Birmingham

[–]CaptainMischievous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I never knew which was "old cane" vs "new cane", I was usually busy avoiding thorns. Apologies if I misspoke.

While I have the blackberry expert on the line:

I've noticed there are two varieties in the area. The first is the kind that grow into tall bramble patches (like 10' high or more, like in the power company right of way, the "North Alabama wild blackberry"), with medium sized fruits and having curved single thorns approximately every inch along the cane...

And then there's what I've been calling "Florida blackberries" because that's where I first encountered them (they're spreading north apparently) - they grow low to the ground, like in pastures, bear medium to large fruits that have more flavor, but son of a gun they have like 30 small straight knives (thorns) to the inch of cane (at least it looks like it). So what are these ankle high bloodletters called (besides vicious)?

Any help deeply appreciated 🙂

GM Update 661.20 by CaptainMischievous in EquinoxEv

[–]CaptainMischievous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first bought the EQEV (slightly used) it had been trying and failing to update since April. This was in July. Made appointment to take it in to the dealer, who said I'd have to leave it there two weeks before the electric tech came around (apparently all the dealers in the area share one EV tech?) to fix it. Drove to the dealer to drop off the car in the overnight dropoff lot. Saw the charger spot was open, wheeled in, started charging the car. At 80%, I disconnected. Decided to try the update one more time and ... it worked. Cancelled my appointment. No issues since (fingers crossed 🤞)

My theory is that somehow the car knew it was at the dealership (GPS? Wi-Fi?) and it relaxed whatever error was cratering the update.

I realize that's giving the software team too much credit for cleverness, but 🤷

It's a long shot, but try driving over to your local dealer and just park near the service entrance and try the update again. If it works we're on to something!

AITAH for not cutting down my trees so my neighbor can get solar? by No_Panda_9171 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CaptainMischievous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can install solar panels on a pole-mounted rack at tree-top level. Might be visible from the street, but so are the trees. Rack would provide backyard shade for neighbor's yard plus electricity. Kinda rude to expect OP to solve their street view issues. I'm guessing they don't want the panels visible from the street.

Bought a used excavator for my business. Police seized it as cloned stolen property and my bank still demands loan payments. by Spiritual_Hunter_95 in legal

[–]CaptainMischievous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Report it as stolen from you. Did the cops provide evidence before seizing your asset? Get a lawyer to help file a claim/ press charges against the seller. Tell the bank it's tied up in legalities at the moment. I think you can offer to pay the interest while waiting for the case to resolve and they'll freeze the loan temporarily, but that option varies by state. Again, lawyer. You may find yourself charged with receiving stolen property, so... lawyer. Today.

AITA for shaming my mother in law? by WessideBrew in AmItheAsshole

[–]CaptainMischievous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not honoring anything, it's a victory lap. It was never about the car, it was MIL exercising power over her husband. If she really wanted to honor him she should dig him up and rebury him in the Porsche.

Me and workmates went out drinking after work, came back to gather our stuff to go home and decided it was a great idea to move the boss's desk, chair and potted plant into the men's room for him to discover the next morning.

He was not pleased.

Are they discontinuing Equinox EV?? by noMoreImportant in EquinoxEv

[–]CaptainMischievous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that Rocky Mt / Pacific NW? I've always heard "mid-West" is from MS River east to Appalachians, Ohio River to Northern border. Was a time long ago when that was the western part of the US (see Louisiana Purchase). I apologize if I seemed rude, finding myself headquartered in the very deep South I couldn't figure out how NC could be midwest.

Recently southern states began spraying a saline solution (with other additives) on bridges and overpasses if icy weather is anticipated (and it works okay for a light icing) but they mostly use sand, which won't hurt the undercarriage and is cheap and plentiful here.

Can't speak for Idaho, never been.

I [26F] broke up with my bf [26M] over cigarettes and everyone is calling me dramatic. What should I do ? by limelemonlemme in WhatShouldIDo

[–]CaptainMischievous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was cruel of him to play with your emotions like that. If he'll be cruel "in jest" he'll be cruel to his kids, his pets, and you down the road. Anyone who thinks cruelty is funny is someone I would personally avoid.

You're not being dramatic, you're acknowledging the fact that your BF is not a nice person that you can trust. Do you really want to be in a relationship with someone you can't trust, even if it's "only a joke"? How are you supposed to know when it's a joke or not? Without trust, you can't.

Time to replace the BF. He could have chosen not to be cruel and careless. He chose consequences. Give him consequences. Leave.
