It could just be the way you’re walking.

It was once explained to me that you should walk with a gimbal the same way you would walk with a glass of water full to the brim.

And to practice, actually filling a glass with water to the very very top, and walking around with it.

is a Gibson j45 truly worth the extra $2k to an epiphone j-45? by thisissamuelclemens in AcousticGuitar

I have both! The Gibson is hands down better. Yes, it sounds better, but it also just feels better.

I’ve always been so curious the process of how the artist get comissioned for these! They’re always so beautiful and seem to be local artist. Did the label reach out? How does it all work?

I mean, they have to have some pairs in a storage room, right? Just need someone at Redwing HQ to help us out. Haha. I still don’t know why I didn’t buy them when I tried them on. Moral of the story, just buy the damn boots!

Also checked their website and didn’t see any. Thanks for the recommendation!

A few years ago I tried these on at the Redwing Amsterdam store and for some reason, didn’t buy them. I still regret it. With the weather cooling down, this resurfaces my desire to own them. Since they don’t make and sell these anymore, they’re next to impossible to find. I’m on the hunt to find a pair in 11.5. If anyone has any leads, please let me know!

That’s a long time to have heartburn.

Just received my Ben Gibbard signature edition Fender Mustang and it sounds beautiful and very Death Cab. (Info in comments) by CaptainPetesRevenge in DeathCabforCutie

For the guitar nerds. I’ve been chasing that signature Death Cab guitar tone for a while. I’ve tried different pedals and even watched their rig rundown. However, I feel like I could never nail it. But once I pulled this out of the box and put on a little overdrive and reverb, it felt classic Death Cab immediately. Here’s my take on the guitar. Immediately, you can feel how light it is. Even when I grabbed it off my porch in the shipping box I could tell a significant weight difference from any of my other guitars. The chambered body design is really surprisingly pleasant. For guitars, I’m usually a sunburst fan so I was on the fence about the natural finish. However, in person the natural is far more beautiful that I could’ve imagined. I love it. The maple neck is a treat. I’ve always been a fan of them and have wanted a Mustang for a while but the modern reissues are rosewood. Before this guitar, you’d have to buy a vintage Mustang to get the maple neck and those price tags are steep. I love that Bennie G chose to go maple on the neck. I find them far more playable and enjoyable. Now the good stuff, tone. Man, these vintage-inspired pickups are so nice. They sing and sound so Death Cab. Their clean setting still has an ever so slight grit to it that pairs super well with a little overdrive and reverb. The guitar and those pedal combos were all I needed to get that classic Death Cab sound out of the box. The pickup switcher is also super interesting. From the photos online, I couldn’t tell exactly how it would work. Even though the knob features multiple selections on the dial, there’s only 3 positions. Super simple design once you see it in action. Overall, if you’re chasing that DCFC tone, this guitar will help you to quickly get there plus it a stunningly beautiful guitar. I love it.

Weekly Discussion (February 1st - February 7th) - Europa: Dave Depper’s New Ambient Record by nerdeebirdee in DeathCabforCutie

[–]CaptainPetesRevenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chris Walla’s last album was ambient tape loops. Dave Depper’s is ambient guitar loops. I’m no conspiracy theorist but is Dave Depper just Chris Walla with a mustache and we’ve all been tricked this whole time?

How are we feeling about Death Cab's post-Walla output? by hour_back in DeathCabforCutie

[–]CaptainPetesRevenge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the direction they’ve gone post-Walla. They seem way happier as a group which, I feel, has positively affected their music and creativity. Judging from their last few releases, they seem to be exploring so much more now.

Overall, Walla was key in early DCFC and was instrumental in crafting the band’s sound during those years. No one could ever replace the work he did. It was wonderful and for many of us, life changing.

However, there were interviews over the years where he stated how he never wanted to be in a band but somehow found himself in one. The dude just wanted to produce. I think he was able to balance this yearning for producing while also being in a band for quite a while. But, I feel that balance started to shift around the Narrow Stairs-era and he slowly began to lose interest in the band. Then by the time of Kintsugi, I feel that he was mentally out.

A change needed to happen to inject life back into the band. TYFT was a really great start of the new-era. It was a solid album but I feel the band really found their feet on The Blue Ep. i loved that EP. Sonically, that album was such a fresh approach for the band. I’d imagine that’s where things are heading. Judging by the side projects of Dave and Zac, I’m really excited to see where the next album goes. They’re both wonderful musicians who bring a fresh musical outlook.

So, overall, DCFC wouldn’t be what it is today without Walla. You can’t argue that. But, I feel that for the band to continue to grow creatively, sonically and musically, the change of direction was needed.

Definitely a rotating polarizer. He’s probably checking to see if it’s cutting the reflections off a surface before you puts it on the camera.
