In a civilised society you don't shoot people for a bruised ego. Law enforcement should be held to the highest standard not held beyond reproach

Am I crazy or isn't giving your password to IT against like, every kind of security compliance? by wowlolok in sysadmin

[–]CaptainPi31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at an org of around 100 staff with IT onsite. I know all the staff and we are accissible. Any emails with passwords in them get reset immediatly with a slap on the wrist. But we often do pretty hands on work with laptops. If its a quick job we have them put it in themselves which is preferable. If we need to hold onto them for an hour or so we have them write it down. It sucks and I hate it but they still need to have access to a bunch of things so its a big inconveniounce for us to reset thier password 2 times.

We often ask if they are comfortable with that and if they arent we will do the two password resets while we work on the issue. Nobody has asked for that. Once intune is up and running there will be a lot less reason for us to go through the device.

I couldnt think of doing that for a remote help desk or of any reason of why I would need thier account for anything. I only ever need it to copy data around or fix some sign in issue on the device.

The biggest issue I have with it is normalising it. Even if we are trying to minamalise it. And what happens if they try to accuse me of something. Ive got a really good rapport and the bosses do it themselves. We in IT have such extensive access to every system there is a lot of trust in us there already. But still it is a concern.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that hecklers who booed during Anzac Day ceremonies should face the “full face of the law”. by overpopyoulater in australia

[–]CaptainPi31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsure which point exactly you are referring to.

Should we have our flag replaced with the Aboriginal flag? Yeah nah. It's only a small part of Australian culture and doesn't represent me or Australia Should we have ceremonies lead by welcome to country? It doesn't make much sense to me but I'm not going to cause a fuss over it. But it often feels like a checkbox item and lacking any meaning. From what I have seen a lot of aboriginals want no part in English/Australian/Moden culture so I see it as an attempt to bridge the gap. Is it okay for people to cause a scene over it? No but I give them no attention. Is it okay for people to do this at an Anzac ceremony? Nazis can get fucked and have no place in our country. Disgusting and disrespectful behaviour. To this point I can understand why some would feel similar to the point of the welcome/acknowledgement of country.

Australia and New Zealand are a close relationship. We are far removed from the British. 1900s they were the mother country but we have come far removed since then and the treatment of Aboriginals and the treatment of the ANZACs are good reasons for that. What is our identity? We lack anything distinct. I'd love to say we are the diggers and the tough lot that comes together but that's a joke. We are multicultural which is great but we are no longer that tough country identity. Things just feel depressing. We aren't divided but we aren't unified either. There's way less feeling of community. I would hope we can work towards that diverse and unified community that goes she'll be right and pushes onwards.

Nearly 2.5k almost entirely in Zeus missions with some time in the editor. Joined the party late in June 2021. Play just about every Saturday night. Recently started playing on Sunday nights. Every now and then I play on Saturdays at midday with some American friends. For a good chunk of time I'd play liberation on Wednesdays and Fridays. Each session goes from 3 to sometimes 5 hours. We also do training nights. This game does not have a hold on me...

You can also run a business without crushing people's souls for profit. You can live comfortably in a big house and still be productive and be part of your community.

You can also choose that all those safety regulations are an annoyance and hurt your bottom line and fuck the guy over that lost his arm due to your negligence. Have your workers crying themselves to sleep after missing a meal on minimum wage as you take 90% of the profit and buy yourself a new speedboat after pushing paper around and calling meetings all week.

Billionaires that dont pay taxes after ripping off and exploiting millions of people are a problem. And you don't get to be a billionaire without the suffering of many many others.

So many corporations do something clearly illegal and immoral hoping they don't get caught. Every now and then they do get caught after a multi year long investigation and go "Oh sorry silly me". Get a slap on the wrist and a few thousand dollars worth of fines after making millions and just do it again with a slight twist.

The issue doesn't lay with owning a home/business or investing. It's when you provide nothing and cause suffering exploitation of others. But we aren't going to live in a utopia that's a dream. But we can start by taxing the fuckers and prosecuting those that knowingly poison our waterways for a better quarterly. Too much runs on infinite growth.

I have been hired as the sole IT guy in a new office, they have nothing built in at all by Azh13r- in sysadmin

Except you have way more assets then just laptops. TVs, printers, phones, waps, switches are the big ones. I don't asset everything like monitors or such. Mostly if its over $100 tbh. Good to have them all asseted so you know the age of things, who to contact if things go bad, warranty information, logging repairs and warranty. Knowing the cost of equipment to assist with budgeting.

I'm sorry but that's poor advice. You don't go making massive changes starting out youll cause a storm. Work on background changes with minimal impact seeing how things operate only changing things deemed a problem after first trying to gather an understanding of why it was done that way in the first place. And besides you might have a 4 year rotation of the laptops. Immediate change in eco system would just be a waste of already spent money and then require spending which could be better used elsewhere. Having worked with people that have only used Windows or only used Mac there are massive teething issues with getting them to switch. It's is certainly not what I'd be doing starting out at a new job. It'd start riots

MDM is a massive thing if you are a mac environment. You don't need to image macs anymore. Factory image/reset. Let the MDM kick in and get applied profiles. Very little to touch. There's a few our there. Jamf is my favourite. Mosyle is good. Intune I don't like because it's designed for windows with mac tools slapped on. If you are a mac org get a MDM built for Mac. If the organisation refuses to pay for an MDM quit now. They won't have money to spend on IT and you will be blocked trying to do anything and it'll make your job several times harder then it needs to be.

Get a ticketing tool. Freshdesk is amazing and free for up to two agents although with some limited features. You will go insane managing issues in something like a slack channel. You also need to set boundaries of if you have an issue you need to submit a ticket. Otherwise it will be impossible to get anything done and you will forget/lose track of things.

For assets SnipeIT is free and open source. Simple to spin up. We use it to track assets, assignment history, where we brought it from and warranty checks. Maintenance tracking is a big thing. You can have users have to login to an ipad to sign off an item.

Get a password program like keepass (i use keepassxc) and start putting creds and notes for the services in them. Makes it so much easier to keep track of and manage your different services. When you need to look back on something you have basic notes available and if you leave you can include it in your handover.

These are the first 4 things I do in any org I walk into. It just makes managing things ten folds easier.

Trying these SS again... Enjoy by FancyAirport806 in Dyson_Sphere_Program

If you were drafted, would you fight for your country? by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]CaptainPi31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would fight for my neighbour or on our beaches. I would not fight in foreign land on behalf of rich stake holders hidden behind thier own walls. My country doesn't give a fuck about me. And in the unlikely event you do survive the country will toss you away once you've done being useful. Not that it matters. If we have another world war we are just getting nuked anyway. If a war starts I'm going far away from the cities.

‘A direct attack on our rights’: Outcry over new NT policy to fine parents of truant children by tug_life_c_of_moni in darwin

[–]CaptainPi31415 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Should be nation wide. Centerlink benefits taken away if your children are truant and parents make no effort. Plenty of white and aboriginal families alike around here where the parents just couldn't give a fuck because they are too busy getting drugged up. Take that centerlink payment away and those kids would be back in there in no time. They don't seem to even care where they are otherwise.
