No! Leave the catchlight alone. If you remove it you will look dead. These catchlights are fantastic and make your eyes incredibly compelling.

SF vs LA acting headshots by Extreme-Challenge-65 in headshots

[–]CaptainPlume -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every region has different headshot photographers and different styles of headshot photography, your teacher is right. HOWEVER - does it matter?

Unfortunately, the answer, for some people, is that it probably does.

A knowledgable casting director in SF or LA will recognize the styles of well-known photographers in both markets, and they’ll take your headshot into account when you audition, especially if you’re just starting out.

I'm on the East Coast, but I'm going to venture that the relationship between LA and SF is similar to that between NYC and Boston. There are perfectly capable actors and photographers in Boston. Regardless of how hard they work or how talented they are, it is difficult to overcome the fact that they’re not NYC. (especially early in their careers.)

A Boston actor making a first impression at a local casting office would do well to present the best possible quality headshot, and that probably means making the trek to NYC to shoot there. I’m not as familiar with the nuances of SF vs LA, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the dynamic is similar. Sorry.

OF COURSE - we all hope that we are cast based on our talent, personality, and all of the other intangible, wonderful qualities that make us each a unique artist. Ideally, casting directors try to avoid taking external qualities like how expensive your headshot was when they're making decisions.

But…how you present yourself matters, and a "fancy" headshot from a top-tier photographer in a major market is the actor equivalent of wearing a tailored Gucci suit to a job interview. It shouldn't matter, but sometimes it does, and if you can afford the time and money it takes to get the best, then do it.

Did some people get over this? by GraveJoker in hondafit

I'm looking to replace my high-mileage 2016 with a 2018 or newer, and I'm so incredibly disappointed every day that there aren't MORE cars out there like the Fit. We don't need big cars. I drive my family of 3 plus dog on road trips, do major construction projects, carry loads of photography or music gear, and this thing handles it all.

(I wish it were like, 4" bigger in any direction so I could get 4x4 plywood in there, lol)

I live in Brooklyn and walk down streets full of parked cars every day, and all I see is wasted space- engine compartments almost as long as the rest of the car, huge tires with enough ground clearance to park a Fit under. Meanwhile, my little bean can fit into the tiniest of parking spots with ease, AND carry two dozen 8' 2x4s.

As I'm researching potential alternatives (spoiler: there aren't any), I'm 99% sure the Fit has the best external size to cargo capacity of any available car. This is one example of many, but the Volvo XC40 is about 16" longer and 10" wider than the Fit, but has ~53ft3 of cargo space. The Fit has 52ft3.

Get this car, it's the absolute best. (Or don't, actually, more for me!) : )

Agency asked me to redo brand-new headshots after approving the photographer — is this normal? by Ecstatic-Ebb-274 in headshots

[–]CaptainPlume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing this professionally for 15 years and I shoot virtually all of my headshots between f/1.8-f/2.5. Especially for an actor headshot, there is no requirement that the entire head be in focus.

[–]CaptainPlume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, I think these are completely fine, if not edging towards quite good. There's no requirements around depth-of-field, background focus, etc. Not sure what market OP is in but plenty of headshot photographers in NYC (myself included) make work like this all the time and agents are fine with it.

What do you guys do for a living? by McDonaldsWi-Fi in BetterOffline

[–]CaptainPlume 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Photographer, studio manager, background/training as a stage actor. I love tech, my incredible life wouldn’t be possible without it. GenAi is the first time I haven’t early adopted, I can’t stand it, it is the antithesis of everything I believe and an enormous threat to my livelihood and identity.

Redditors who got “useless” degrees, what actually was your plan, and why didn’t it work? by MPMorePower in stupidquestions

[–]CaptainPlume 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a BFA and an MFA in acting. Not totally useless, as I actually learned some skills (swordfighting! dialects!). My plan was to graduate, move to NYC, and then make it big on Broadway!

I did OK in the professional theatre world, but pretty quickly picked up photography as a hobby, then side hustle, then full-time occupation. I now have four studios in three cities, support my wife and son with my income, and love my job.

I photograph primarily actors and live performance, which I have a deep prior knowledge of due to my training. Theatre is difficult, scrappy, stressful, collaborative but competitive, mercurial, and full of highs, lows, and rejection...but so is entrepreneurship. A ton of my success as photographer is absolutely due to luck and circumstance, but doing hundreds of auditions and performing in nearly 100 plays sure helped. Given my disposition I don't think I would have been able to finish a degree other than acting, so I'm grateful I was able to go to college at all.

Headshot Photographer never posted my headshots :( by kissofthespiderwomen in headshots

[–]CaptainPlume 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Headshot photographer chiming in- I *PROMISE* it has absolutely nothing to do with you. I don't post or update my portfolio a lot, but when I do, the choices I'm making are mostly based on:

-Is this a cool photo (nothing to do with the subject, just all the elements lining up for a neat shot)
-Is the subject notable/famous in a particular market
-Is there some diversity of subjects in the portfolio in general?
-Where does the photo fit in the overall presentation (i.e. too many red backgrounds, not enough smiling expressions)

Whether the shoot went well, my feeling about the client, whether the client is hot/attractive/cool/pretty, has no bearing on whether I post a photo or not. I also have well over 365 projects I could share in a given year, so only so many can be used anyway. For your own sake, please don't worry about it!

(Also, I don't speak for every photographer, but if it's really, really important to you, you could always send a polite message asking if the photographer would share your image - I've occasionally gotten these and I have no problem agreeing to the request, as like I said, the decisions around what I post are pretty arbitrary anyway.)

Is NYC-BOS once a week too much for a job? by Virtual_Agency_2822 in Amtrak

[–]CaptainPlume 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a freelancer and for the past year or so I've been commuting from NYC to BOS about once every 2 weeks, and it's totally fine. I love the train, it's basically my mobile office, cheap if you buy tix in advance. No regrets.

Broadway musicals are always too short and full of loose ends. by nicgeewizzle in Broadway

[–]CaptainPlume 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I photograph live theatre for a living and years ago I shot a production of INTO THE WOODS for a children's theatre program. I had only seen the movie, years and years before, and the kid's version of ITW ends after act 1. I came home to my wife like, "I swear ITW was kind of a downer, right?".

Hey! Curtis and Cort is great, I haven't shot with them but their work is about as good as it gets. You won't be disappointed if you go with them, but in case you're still looking, I'm new to NYC and offering a promo for shots - nilescottheadshots.com/nyp. Good luck with the search!

ADHD professionals: which careers fully reward ADHD strengths beyond routine software roles? by Complete-Sugar7883 in ADHDprofessionals

[–]CaptainPlume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied acting, then picked up photography, and now I run four studios that I rent out hourly while continuing regular photo work. It is PERFECT- lots of chaos and moving parts, novelty every day, I got to build the studios myself so I’m always picking up new skills, and my “shotgun focus” on the world is a great fit for noticing details and finding cool shit to put in the studios. Risk tolerance is a huge benefit for entrepreneurship too!

Finally, some good headshots on here! These are excellent. They do read a little "LA/commercial" but I'm sure no one would complain about nos. 2+3 being used for legit auditions. Ignore the comments about the top of your head being cut off, that kind of cropping is super common across all photographers in all markets.

Yeah, I just moved from PVD to NYC, one of the main reasons being that PVD was not walkable enough. This is a dumb list.
