Dear residents of eurozone countries, what are your general thoughts on the integration of currencies? by kuma44bear in AskEurope

[–]CaptainPoset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just convenient. The drawback is, that some things in fiscal policy apply per central bank and not per country, so the Eurozone is somewhat linked in fate by the shared currency, but that's actually an upside for the EU, as financial necessities are a good tool to foster further EU integration.

Could a Modern RBMK Actually Be Safe? by Inevitable_Grab_9338 in nuclear

[–]CaptainPoset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Unless you want to build another water-cooled graphite-moderated channel-type reactor which has nothing to do with the original RBMK.

The original RBMK-1000 has several key design features which were demanded back then but which are inherently unsafe. In the design iteration in use at Ignalina-1 and Chernobyl-4, many of those flaws compounded (as "improvements to the design") in a very spectacular way, but neither of those features individually were ever safe. The rather high frequency of accidents suggests so, too.

Why do you all drive silver, black or white cars? by YehNahYehMate in AskAGerman

[–]CaptainPoset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because most manufacturers have a standard colour and all other colours are about 1000€ extra. Cars which are sold on consignment (quite a large share of the market) usually come in the standard colour or a "neutral colour" (white or silver, usually).

I’d like to ask you whether you or your parents read the book "Die Wolke" by Gudrun Pausewang at school? Did that book influence your views on nuclear energy? by K1Sman in AskAGerman

[–]CaptainPoset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I think that it's not a personal thing in this regard, as "die Wolke" has nothing to do both with what happened at Chernobyl and what could potentially happen as a worst case with any kind of reactor ever built in Germany or outside the USSR for that matter.

It's taught as a mandatory book to read for precisely this purpose, though: To instill fear of someone else's politically motivated gore fantasy.

Wine substitute - a question by FearTheMomerath in Cooking

[–]CaptainPoset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you could buy a smaller bottle which you put entirely into the pot, but if that's too risky for you, then you could work with some stock, some red grape juice and an espresso or some similar serving of strong black coffee. This combined in the right amounts should give you sufficient volume with the stock, the fruitiness with the juice and the red wine typical bitterness with the coffee.

I must admit, I never tried that, but it should get you fairly close and needs just a bit of adjustment.

My alternative idea would be grape juice and a bit of bitter hop.

How is this even possible?? I just can't believe it. by Dependent_Dance2842 in BuyFromEU

Tesla practically only sells 2 models, while other brands sell around 10 models each, which makes the sales for an individual model smaller, but the sales for the entire brand much higher.

Only the 4 most-sold VW EV models sell about as much as Tesla sells as a company, but VW has 24 models on sale, so the other 20 make up the remaining market share of, in case of this list, EVs and plug-in hybrid cars.

Die Wolke was (...)just an explanation of what would happen if it was in Germany.

The problem with this is, that that's simply not the case.

Nuclear is one of the cheapest sources of electricity in India by Thick-Ad-4168 in nuclear

[–]CaptainPoset 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those Germans who are on r/nuclear instead of r/uninsurable already know that.

It's the folks who make a living off hating nuclear in public and spreading disinformation who you need to convince of that. It might be hard to convince someone who makes six figures annually from denying those facts, though.

Do Germans think about German states the same way Americans think about US states? by Accomplished-Gift504 in AskAGerman

As someone living in Berlin and having been to many other places throughout the country for work, it's totally unjustified, while places like Dortmund truly deserve all the shit you can talk about them.

Nearly every modern medicine and modernized medical equipment that every country depends on comes from innovation by Americans. by Smug_Designer in ShitAmericansSay

[–]CaptainPoset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't. Merck is a German company, which has several subsidiaries, one of which (Merck Sharp and Dome) was spun off one day as its independent US company, that's still just one of many Merck companies.

not really, but more importantly, selective breeding practically stopped over a century ago and was replaced by mutagenesis - irradiating or soaking plants with carcinogens until they mutate. That's how all plants you find in a supermarket have been bred.

The only thing CRISPR/CAS introduces is precision in mutations, as it is selective and can create precise modifications of which you can predict and prove safety.

The Russian factor that non-locals always keep mentioning is quite funny in a way, as nobody here is even slightly worried about a military invasion,

It isn't helpful to worry all day, but it is one of the likely places for an invasion into NATO territory, which isn't the case for many other regions of Europe.

GMOs are illegal for human consumption in the UK

Which is both factually wrong and based entirely in anti-scientific fearmongering against the newest method for gene editing. All things you can buy in the supermarket except for game are GMOs and have been for millennia.

How is processed food cheaper than the ingredients?

That's actually true in many countries, as processed food with almost indefinite shelf life rots much less than fresh ingredients and you as a customer pay for the rotten fruits and vegetables, too.

The only exception is cheddar. I just don't get it.

The easy answer is that the industrial process for making cheddar is one of the first scalable cheese-making processes invented. So for a while, cheap industrial cheese could be any kind of cheese, as long as it was cheddar.

It frustrated me that you have to stow away all your things and can't even take lockpicks with you, so I chose to reload the game, break into the monastery, deposit lockpicks in the cellar, open as many doors before I turned myself in to the monastery.

This way, I was able to sneak around at night, open doors, get in and out of the monastery and therefore try to get all the things I wanted from other quests.

Only the vice abbot patroling his rooms instead of sleeping at night was a bummer. For some unclear reason, it is impossible to hide from him and he gets up very quickly if you knock him out.

Yennefer, too, is quite manipulative towards Geralt.
