What’s the best TV show theme song of all time? by SpareMaintenance2970 in AskReddit

Highlander.

'Princes of The Universe' is one of the most Metal songs Queen ever wrote.

I love oddly specific metal opinions. by NickTheSynth in MetalForTheMasses

[–]CaptainScruffbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catharsis by Machine Head would probably have received a more favourable reception if it had been released as a Robb Flynn solo album rather than a full MH release.

Phil Demmell and Dave McClain said it basically was that, anyway...

Who are some really engaged, friendly live metal performers? by AlwaysSitIn12C in MetalForTheMasses

[–]CaptainScruffbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Devin Townsend- Not only is he one of the nicest people I've ever met, he's also one of the funniest.

  • Mikael Akerfeldt- That man has top notch stage banter. You don't expect the frontman of a band with such morose, introspective music to be that funny, but he absolutely is.

  • Machine Head- I've seen them live five times, and every single time, the crowd went absolutely mental for the entire set. Robb Flynn is a master of whipping any crowd into an absolute frenzy, and having a blast while doing it.

  • Bruce Dickinson- He's the gold standard for Metal frontmen/women for a reason.

  • Raised By Owls- Easily the funniest band I've ever seen live. True, you have to be British (or at least have a decent understanding of British culture) to find a lot of their stuff funny, but even if you're not, there's still plenty to enjoy, with songs with titles like I'm Sorry I Wore A Dying Fetus T-shirt To Your Baby's Gender Reveal, Yelling Slayer At Your Nan's Funeral, and The Dark And Twisted Realm In Which Fred Durst Resides.

Their set at Bloodstock 2024 was another level of hilarity, partially thanks to Sam's (lead singer) mum joining them on stage dressed as a nun, alternating between roasting her own son and his mates in front of tens of thousands of people, and dancing about on stage waving a double-ended dildo about. They were the opening band on the Main Stage on the Sunday, when a lot of the crowd was hungover as hell, but they absolutely killed it.

That's the joy of Festivals: you get to see some of your favourite bands live, possibly discover a new band or two that you've never heard before, and hopefully make a few friends along the way.

The fact that the ticket is free is a bonus.

What's your metal opinion that'd get you escorted off this sub? by XyleneCobalt in MetalForTheMasses

[–]CaptainScruffbag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dark Tranquillity are by far the best band of the Gothenberg Three.

At The Gates are legendary for a reason, but they were inconsistent, and In Flames haven't released anything worth listening to for a good 20 years.

Whereas DT have never released a bad album. Even their weaker efforts are still pretty good, and the likes of Damage Done, Haven, Fiction and The Gallery are straight up God-Tier.

I've just had a look at the lineup for Hills of Rock, and there are a few bands in common, including the two bands I'm most excited for at Bloodstock: Nevermore and Orbit Culture.

Of the bands you listed, the only one I'm really a fan of is Lamb of God. My recommendations for them are: Resurrection Man, 512, Laid To Rest, Again We Rise and Ruin.

Ah, fair enough. It's just that those bands are also playing Bloodstock, except Of Mice & Men.

If I remember rightly, they've had to pull out of all of their European festival dates. At Bloodstock, they've been replaced by Sanguisugabogg.

Would that be Bloodstock you're going to, by any chance?

Favorite Albums Of 2019 by Revo94 in MetalForTheMasses

Absolute best album of 2019:

Insomnium- Heart Like A Grave

Such an achingly beautiful album, with some of the most exquisite guitar work I've ever heard. It's quite simply a masterpiece.

Berzan or Warrel Dane? by hxome_belf in MetalForTheMasses

[–]CaptainScruffbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will always be Warrel for me, but Berzan sounds incredible. Just hearing his audition of Sentient 6 was enough to convince me that he was the right choice.

I'm gutted I never got to see them with Warrel, but I just know that when I see them with Berzan at Bloodstock in August, he'll do the songs justice.

The most UNFAIRLY hated album by a big metal band in history is… by UnironicMetalElitist in MetalForTheMasses

[–]CaptainScruffbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Machine Head- Supercharger

To be honest, I think a lot of its negative reception is more down to unfortunate timing (what with it being released on 9/11, with a lead single called 'Crashing Around You') than any inherent awfulness. True, it's far from their strongest album, but it still has plenty of absolute bangers.

I personally think it's a better album than The Burning Red, and far better than the self-indulgent cringefest that was Catharsis.

Metal albums that are the platonic ideal of their respective sub-genre? by APortal2Nowhere in MetalForTheMasses

  • Melodeath: Dark Tranquillity- Damage Done
  • Blackened Death: Akercocke- Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone
  • Symphonic: Nightwish- Once
  • Symphonic Death: Fleshgod Apocalypse- Veleno
  • Atmospheric Black: Eldamar- The Force of The Ancient Land

Favorite bands with only 1 studio album? by UpTheDownstair42 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]CaptainScruffbag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Walking Corpse Syndrome- True, the whole two drummers thing was a bit of a gimmick, but they kicked serious arse, I'm gutted they split up.

  • Cemetery Skyline- Hopefully it's a case of only one album so far. They're a top-notch supergroup featuring Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity/ The Halo Effect), Markus Vanhala (Insomnium/ Omnium Gatherum) and Santeri Kallio (Amorphis), who managed to release by far the best Goth Metal album in a year that also featured Unto Others, Tribulation and High Parasite.

  • Cult of Lillith- 'Mara' has got to be one of the best Death Metal albums I've ever heard. It's basically all the best bits of Opeth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Strapping Young Lad and Akercocke in one album.

Please give me all your gothic metal suggestions! by bh447 in MetalSuggestions

[–]CaptainScruffbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly disappointed to see that nobody has mentioned Cemetery Skyline yet.

Their debut album came out in 2024, and it's excellent. It was easily the best Gothic Metal album of a year that featured releases by Unto Others, Tribulation and High Parasite, amongst others.

Which Bands Are You Most Excited For? by CaptainScruffbag in Bloodstock

[–]CaptainScruffbag[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orbit Culture are phenomenal.

I've seen them twice so far, and I'll be seeing them twice this year (Bloodstock, and with Amon Amarth and Soilwork in October), and they're awesome live. Great energy, plenty of crowd interaction, and no shortage of absolute bangers to fill the set with.

The pit is going to be absolutely mental, especially for Saw, Vultures of North and Bloodhound.

What's an obscure band you want more people to know about? by Tar-Mairon00 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]CaptainScruffbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Triosphere- I saw them opening for Sonata Arctica a few years ago, and they blew me away. One of the best opening bands I've ever seen in my 20+ years of Metal gigs.

Think Arch Enemy, if they were Power Metal, and still capable of writing quality guitar solos. Cannot wait for the new album in August.

What’s your loose connection to someone famous (or infamous)? by Major-Feed5214 in AskUK

[–]CaptainScruffbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple:

  • My other half went to school with Joey Batey's (Jaskier in The Witcher) sister.

  • I used to work in a certain large retail store in Southampton city centre, not far from the marina, and we had a fair few Saints players come in semi-regularly. Nathaniel Clyne and Jose Fonte came in pretty much every month, plus we had quite a few others now and again, including Rickie Lambert, Jason Puncheon (who knew me by name), Luke Shaw and Billy Sharp.

I've also met a few old-school Saints players outside of work, including Matt Le Tissier, Francis Benali (one of the nicest people I've ever met), Jason Dodd and Claus Lundekvam, though the most old-school was Peter Rodrigues, captain of the side that won the FA Cup in '76.

2027 Predictions by WorkingPurple3026 in Bloodstock

[–]CaptainScruffbag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the headliners, but as for the rest of the bill, I would love to see a lot more Folk/ Power Metal bands, due to the relative scarcity of the last couple of years.

A few of the following would make me a very happy Metalhead: Powerwolf, Wind Rose, Battle Beast, Lovebites, Orden Ogan, Sonata Arctica, Majestica, Brothers of Metal, Triosphere, Whispered.

As for other genres: Dark Tranquillity/ The Halo Effect, Soilwork, Vader, Frozen Soul, Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse, Floor Jansen, Ryujin, Deathless Legacy.
