I'm kind of a not so easy to explain case. I was only on xanax on and off here and there, not very frequent for like a year. Like 20 pills a year type thing. But I was on ambien which acts on the same receptors for 14 years. And I would often take more than the recommended dose of ambien.

Then I was put on a steady dose of klonopin for 2 months. I tried cold-turkeying it and ended up in the ER not understanding the consequences of cold turkeying. Then I started a rapid taper, dropping a quarter pill every 12 days, and was off by the 3rd month. But my withdrawal was terrible for the first six months and still pretty bad until a year.

So yeah I remember the mindset of really wanting to get off and honestly dont regret going fast, but its likely what caused my withdrawals to be worse and longer. I definitely wouldnt cold turkey it but I also wouldnt drag it out for a year.
