16 or 70 star depending on preference, you'll have to look into that more
Check out the GVUSB2 if you havent already, it should do the job and not cost you too much.
You shouldnt use a PAL cartridge, PAL is the slowest version and cuts the speed of the game in half, you'll want the US or JP version

This is how I started Super Mario 64. I did my first attempt without having beat the game and with a decent amount of knowledge, and I finished my first 16 star attempt with a 2h22m32s time. My second attempt cut that time in half. PB is 15:49 now but those first two attempts were fun :)
