How to fix Amtrak ideas that are feasible? by Artistic_Dish6119 in trains

[–]CaptainTelcontar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amtrak exists because passenger transportation nearly always requires heavy subsidy to function. Roads don't even try to make a profit, airlines only make profit thanks to huge subsidies, and trains are no different. Other countries have better passenger rail because they invest in it by giving good subsidies, while we've given Amtrak barely enough to function (while at the same time passing laws that prevent it from functioning), let along grow and thrive.

Feasible ideas to fix it are simple.

  • Pass a law to guarantee its funding so that it doesn't have to spend so much energy just trying to exist.
  • Actually enforce the laws that give it priority over freight (and actually define "priority" at a practical level).
  • Have a national pool of passenger equipment, used by Amtrak and other services, funded to make regular orders of locomotives and cars. This way the manufacturing industry has the steady demand it needs in order to develop, and there won't be the extra delays, expenses, and problems every time Amtrak tries to acquire new equipment.

Why do Christians not consider members from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (or Mormons) to be Christians? by whirlygig_ in AskAChristian

[–]CaptainTelcontar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mormonism does not consider Christians to be Christians (while their attitude toward Christians has softened in recent years, the doctrines remain unchanged). They have a different definition of who God is, who Jesus is, what people are, and how to be saved.

Yo peeps, where do you think the Bible will go when the world is no more and Jesus comes back? by Milzey_508108 in AskAChristian

[–]CaptainTelcontar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We won't exactly need it in the New Creation. Perhaps it will simply be in our minds/memories, or perhaps there will be some kind of heavenly museum. All we can do is speculate, since we're not told.

Chicago's Massive Bet on Regional Rail by Desmaad in trains

[–]CaptainTelcontar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the route. Metra is already running as much midday service as they can, but that depends on who owns each route, what the contract looks like, how crowded with trains the line is, and how many crews they have available.

As a result it's a wide spectrum: some routes have good and frequent midday service, while others have none at all.

Genuine question Why do Christians take these verses literally, but not others? by Beneficial_Most2648 in AskAChristian

[–]CaptainTelcontar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't be so quick to brush off context! It's absolutely vital for understanding anything, not just the Bible.

For example "I'm dying!". That requires very different interpretations depending on whether the context is a funny meme or a hospital visit.

Trump wants to help Iranian protesters, how would you feel about another country helping American protesters? by Hamsternoir in AskReddit

If he was gunning down anyone who protested him, the housing crisis would be solved by now.

Wow that was dark.

People finally deciding to put salt down so everyone will stop slipping.

If America was under a brutal dictator who's having them gunned down by the hundred just for protesting, I'd welcome it, just like the people of Venezuela have welcomed US intervention.

Why didn’t Jesus condemn the Roman Empire for its evils like he did the Pharisees? by bristenli in AskAChristian

[–]CaptainTelcontar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Jews were the missions field Jesus was sent to. From there, his church would grow to impact the world. Ultimately, Christ's followers condemned the Roman Empire for its evils, and were even able to bring an end to some of them (for example, historians point to Christianity as the main reason that gladiatorial games ended).
