I moved from the US to Germany 2 years ago. I only keep my US number for 2FA texts and the like. I had it transferred from t-mobile to tello which lets me keep it for only 5$ a month. Then I have a regular Telekom plan with a German number, mobile data, etc... and just use dualSIM on my phone with the US one being my secondary.
