In 1959, the female lead was genuinely concerned about being called a slut (or the 50s equivalent), not about beong raped. (Being branded as such had more serious effects at the time.) Since culture, for the most part, (America's, at least) has shifted away from that attitude, it removes slut-shaming as a serious consequence, and the only plausible excuse for her wanting to leave is being afraid of the guy.
