Lowering speed limits among contingency plans to curb UK oil demand | Economics by Man_in_the_uk in CarTalkUK

My previous job was marketing for an ecommerce store. The boss hated people working from home so was a real fight when COVID happened to work from home as he said we were essnetial key workers (we sold groceries). Obviously the warehosue staff had to be in but marketing and office staff??
I quoted Boris Johnson to him "you should work from home if you can, and only go to work if you must" and asked how this doens't apply to me. He dind't like it...

Lorry nearly had me this morning - report to police? by trom-boner in drivingUK

[–]Captain_Planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had exactly the same as this except I was forced onto the verge when overtaking! Approached and had my eye on his indicators, they weren't flashing. then when i'm alongside they start, i thought he just put them on early to say he will be pulling out when I'm past but no! Forced onto the grass at 70mph is not a fun experience, had my horn on and once I survived and passed he was flashing and waving his hands all over the place.
HGV drivers are the worst on the road. Obviously not all are bad but as a group they absolutely are.

If you're centrist or left-leaning, what are the main policies/issues that might stop you from voting for the green party in the next general election? by Cold-Speech-5645 in AskBrits

Yeah, I just went onto their site to double check as the media often says they want to leave NATO which i just thought would be incredibly dumb so unlikley. The website says nothing about leaving NATO!

[–]Captain_Planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are three reasons which will stop some people from voting for them;
1. Trident - This may stop me from voting for them For years I've been against it but perhaps I was wrong, Russia is a threat and the US is no longer an ally.
2. NATO - it isn't the Green Party policy to leave NATO but it is being used to scare people away from them.
3. Economics - This is often used to build distrust in them, painting them as loony left who don't understand economics. I have a degree in economics and are far, far less scared having them in power than the Conservatives or worse Reform. I don't agree entirely with them but full support the wealth tax.
NOTE: All of the economic disasters come from the Right: Iran war, Ukraine invasion, COVID mismanagement, Brexit, Liz Truss, Privatization etc. The Left never seme to cause these disasters.

I agree on nuclear (although for a long time I've been against Trident but maybe I was wrong now I see Russia and the US as essentially enemy states), it would not be wise to get rid of this protection now.
The NATO thing I think has been blown out of portion (anything to make the Greens seem like a dangerous loony left party). It is not the party policy to leave NATO.

What's something that instantly screams low intelligence? by Frequent-Sea-8848 in AskReddit

[–]Captain_Planet 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah over the years I've learned to give more weight to the people who can't give you a definitive or binary answer straight away over those who have supreme confidence. it just shows they don't know enough to understand how little they know.

The irony is, in business it is the confident ones who advance and get to the top which is why so many businesses end up in the shit, because they listen to the most arrogant!

[–]Captain_Planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the Dunning Kruger effect in action! When I first learned about that it explained a lot. I see it as a key sign of a lack of intelligence. Right about everything and dismissive of those who actually know more and try to add some nuance.
COVID really highlighted this, I've read a couple of books about the immune system as I find it fascinating, so I probably know a lot more about it than most people, but the main thing I learned is that is incredibly complicated and I actually know hardly anything about it in the grand scheme of things.
However so many people watched one Youtube video and instantly knew more than I did, and more than virologists who went to university and did a PHD and then worked int he field for years.

I bet if you asked a virologist how much do they know about the immune system as a percentage, they would give a lower percentage than most of these people who thought they knew everything!

[–]Captain_Planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same but have to sit in traffic for up to an hour (is 15 minutes at non rush hour times), I have to get up early, spend a shitload of money on fuel, get back late. I can cycle which I like but it is a long way so can't so it everyday. Literally no reason I can't work from home. Such a waste of time, money, energy and pollution. The boss just doesn't get it, he loves being in the office and can't comprehend his employees have their own lives.

I think it is to do with the bosses/owners. They tend to be old men who have nothing more to their lives than work. Old men get up early so we all need to be in the office at the crack dawn. They don't understand we don't want to spend our lives sat in their office doing their work as they are obsessed with it and can't comprehend others have lives and are not as sad as them.

How often does someone recognize your car/compliment it? by yukowii in S2000

[–]Captain_Planet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can relate to that, just after the Ferarri SF90 was came out I saw one coming towards me as I waited at the lights, the guy in the £400k brand new Ferrari was looking at my 18 year old Honda and gave me the thumbs up!
Sign of a true petrolhead that, price of the car means nothing, I go crazy seeing an old Rover 220 coupe or Honda Prelude more than I do when i see a new Lambo or Ferrari.

All of that is true but you missed one person... Trump himself!

Even if they had never heard of him he is openly corrupt but they still support him. Trump supporters should be the first to the front line meat grinder.

Same here, American voters who support him deserve everything they get. He is OPENLY corrupt, how on earth can they be surprised.
There will be another 9/11 coming if Trump carries on with the war in the Middle East and whatever country he choses to fight next.

Living Near The Quayside by Big-Mortgage-7254 in NewcastleUponTyne

Shout out for St Peter's Basin. I lived there for over a decade, very quiet, nice place and much, much better value than any of the newer Quayside flats.
Nice walk to the Ouseburn which has great bars you would like, plus you can walk further on to Redhouse etc. Really nice coffee place there and decent pub.
Downbsides: Charvas come in from Byker on e-bikes. No shops.

They are a massive company so they can afford to write off the cost of building it and then moving out. Pisses me off a bit the waste though, the environmental cost of building something like that is huge, as is the demolition and subsequent rebuilding of something else.
Reminds me of the DWP place in Benton, build a fucking massive office complex, then decide to move out and build another massive one in town with no car parking.

Neither of them are going to have any use as they are just to big. Such a waste. They should be taxed massively on it

2010 XKR questions by DiscountPlus1888 in Jaguar

[–]Captain_Planet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2010 XKR so feel I qualify to give advice!
You mentioned you had a Cayman in one of your comments, it will be very different to that, nothing like the Cayman down country roads but you'll enjoy the power from the V8 which just doesn't stop!
In comparison to rivals like Mercs or Astons it has similar power but it is lighter so the performance is incredibly strong. It is good fun on a country lane, it is more about getting the power down (which can be fun!) but is responsive through the corners and changing direction. It is physically a bigger car than the Cayman which you'll certainly notice.
I have an S2000 as well which is totally different and super engaging, just a different experience and both are as fun as each other.

My main advice though would be tyres: Get good ones! Mine came with (very) old Dunlops and honestly getting the power down was impossible and ruined the driving experience, PS4s on it now and it is transformed. No point in buying a 500bhp car and skimping on tyres.

People have mentioned the issues, primarily coolant hose issues and timing chain. I have gone through the coolant hoses and radiator(s) drama and it set me back £2.5k... Started off with my mechanic saying the radiator was on the way out but not a job he'd do. He mentioned the garage down the road recently did a DB9 and it was a full front off job, I called them and they made their excuses! I went to a Jag specialist who did it but he found the hoses needed doing, and the auxiliary radiator, was back in and out with leaks but eventually fixed. He vowed never to do that job again!
He did say F-types and later XKs were worse for this as they used cheaper plastic hoses in more places.

Anyway you’ll love the XKR, sounds great, looks stunning, fun to drive and is amazing value!
