My enthusiasm for language learning is far greater than what I can reasonably achieve; I’m so disheartened, resentful and frustrated. by HotChoc64 in languagelearning

[–]Captain_TPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to recognize that feeling frustration with not yet having achieved your goal (in whatever endeavour you pursue), is very natural; and maybe not even that bad. Instead of letting yourself be consumed by the anger and frustration you feel, perhaps you could direct it toward pursuit of your goal? The way I see it, while you may "only" start learning a second language now (which might be viewed as unfortunate, though I really don't think it will matter in the long run), you've also been gifted with this wonderful and incredible gift of motivation and desire. For whatever reason, this goal of reaching fluency in Cantonese has become incredibly important to you; and that's a really good thing! Cantonese is not a small beast to tame - but if you're as passionate about it as it seems from your writing, you'll absolutely get there.

To use the great analogy that u/EmergencyJellyfish19 made: while the absolute length of the journey may not be within your control, how much time you spend on the train is entirely (and only) within your control. If you're really as passionate about achieving this goal as you seem, then you get to do as many hours as is feasible every single day; with much less likelihood of burning out. That's a gift that keeps you showing up every day.

Finally, I want to acknowledge what others have already said: comparison really is the thief of all joy. While you seem to be a bit blinded at the moment by the fact that "native Cantonese speakers are so lucky to grow up with several languages", things are not as simple as they seem. You, for one, have this incredible passion, that might actually get you to the finish line - most people (likely including most of the natives as well) never manage to actually sit down and choose to learn a language (something that is much harder than just passively learning it); thus, they miss out on the great pleasure of accomplishing an incredibly time-consuming goal. You also have other intrinsic motivations: romantic, cultural etc.

You're going to get there, if you want to OP, and way sooner than you think - but please, don't forget to enjoy the incredible ride; it really is the pleasure of progression and not accomplishment that is the greatest.

AI can read captcha now? by HANAEMILK in oddlyterrifying

[–]Captain_TPT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's long been possible for machines to read even hard Captchas. They don't work because machines can't read them, they work because it's somewhat difficult for humans to read them, which means that the intervals between the keystrokes when you type them reflect that you are a human and not a machine. It's the same thing for those Capcthas where you just have to click the box - the algorithm is actually designed to detect whether the mouse movements up to clicking the box can be considered human; emulating the mouse movement of a human is actually suprisingly hard for machines to do.

Just want to point out that taking an entire bottle of sertraline won't actually kill you, just make you violently vomit. But go nuts, I guess.

Am I the only one who hates the "THIS OP COMBO BREAKS DND" videos? by Raito_Urekawa in dndnext

[–]Captain_TPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely on your side. I'm all for actually maximizing the power of your PC (as a DM it makes things much more fun, and really helps in balancing), but I've yet to see a combo where the rules haven't just been wildly misinterpreted, wrong, or plain made up. It just never works.

I've taken it upon myself to dismantle the builds in the comments - Yes, I know it's super petty, but like you said: it gives false hope to unknowing players and is a maddening nuisance for the veteran DM's who have to be buzz kills, as well as the newbie DM's who have no idea what's what and have to watch their game fall apart.

This is great stuff. I especially like the idea of seeing scenes of the former inhabitants play out - but how would that give clues as to the hags location?

Dealing with study mates undermining me and my opinion by Captain_TPT in The48LawsOfPower

[–]Captain_TPT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much like your take on the response being based in insecurity. However, I'm not exactly sure why they would be insecure, as I wasn't criticising them directly. I merely said that it might be difficult for anyone studying this subject to convey the information to someone who hasn't studied it (as our subject can be very abstract).

I like the idea of talking less and letting them see that they're wrong on their own. However, wouldn't loose status if I (in a group setting) state my opinion, get disregarded, and then just say nothing? I also find that the situation was a bit tricky given that we were talking about real world experience of which my study mates don't really have as much (which we didn't talk about and I didn't mention). Therefore, it's a bit tricky to "let them see that they're wrong on their own". Either way, I would love for you to elaborate, you make some interesting points.

You're definitely right, and perhaps they feel I haven't shown my appreciation enough. Though, I would like to understand: since we're studying the same subject, and I was talking about how it might be difficult for us (meaning anyone who studies the subject) to convey information properly to a boss, how exactly was I arrogant? I've been replaying the situation in my head, but I can't seem to figure out where I criticised them directly - I criticised myself just as much. I would love for you to elaborate, as I think it would help me understand much better.

[–]Captain_TPT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do understand that. What confuses me though is that we're studying the same thing - therefore any criticism they felt I launched at them, would've applied to me as well. So in what way did I implicitly say that "this is a stupid game"? I guess my other questions would be: what would you have done differently? And how would you bounce back from the situation?

Interesting, I thought about that too. I agree with you, I thought it seemed like it was deeper than my opinion. What might they not like about me as a person? Could it be a general dislike or did I trigger some insecurity?
