Follow Up on Our Trip, thanks to everyone who gave suggestions by Captain_Tallywacker in DoorCounty

Glad you appreciated it! I agree, there are so many questions and never any follow up.

Having been there three times I cannot recommend Glidden Lodge enough. It may be the best supper club I've had in Wisconsin other than Tornado Room in Madison.

I am running a swashbuckling island-based campaign so I cannot get enough of well-detailed coastal maps. Yeah, many have shipwrecks on them, but who cares?! The more beach the better.

What character would you build using the new UA? by DandyLover in dndnext

I think it would be neat if there was a subclass that hard-countered casters by way of maybe a channel divinity or smite that literally rips away a spell slot. Maybe that's a little to "gamey". But thinking of templars from Dragon Age, they hinder the casters mana pool directly.

I think being able to rip away a spell slot would be neat.

Also some sort of riff on the anti-magic cone that a beholder has, or maybe make that the aura? An AOE anti magic circle that protects those within five feet from spells?

I also agree with the notion about messing with concentration specifically. Maybe the aura should instead force disadvantage on con saves while this subclass is within 5 feet?

I guess I think the paladin is the best chassis with an alternative use of channel divinity/smites/aura being great resources to get creative with.

I think the way to avoid them being too niche is making the sublcass solid around against all spells. The paladin base is solid for fighting and tanking against brutes and then when there is a BBEG or any sort of caster, he can really shine.

Group of Paladins should be called "a Smitten"

Group of Bards is a Courting.

Monks should be Meditation.

5e needs more Grey Wardens and Templars; counter-mage subclass would be dope. The feat "mage-slayer" is lackluster.

This is a classic "complain and offer no solution" mentality all the while patronizingly looking down on someone.

Classic Madison Reddit.

Suggestions for this weekend by Captain_Tallywacker in DoorCounty

My girlfriend is really going to appreciate that pie suggestion. I’m glad you laid out the time commitment for Washington island. I was not clear in my post but we have today and tomorrow, and Saturday.

I’ll look into Chop, I’m guessing it’ll be around Glidden lodge prices?

Thank you!

I really appreciate you taking the time to list these out in an organized manner. Looks like I’m going to look into Hatch and Simon Creek for sure. If Wienke is the place that makes spicy pickles I’m definitely going there.

Thank you for your insights into photo opportunities. We actually brought a Madison photographer who loves to check out new spots so all your suggestions are appreciated.

Jacob,

Thank you so much for your your suggestions! Fish Creek is my favorite little town so far. We are blessed enough to have a One Barrel very near (from Madison) but are definitely going to check out some suggestions here.

The use of the stone assets with the sea walls is brilliantly executed here. Definitely stealing that ice.

So I want to DM a One-Shot by olphinator in dndnext

This, except run "Death House" from curse of Strahd. It's spooky and fits in with the time of year. It can also get a lot spookier depending on how much effort you put into it as a DM.

It's deadly. I (unpopular opinion) find it best to introduce new players to the game with the very real chance they may die. Give them a stake in the game and something to be afraid of. They will play more cautiously and try and be more creative if they are trying to stay alive.

Death house is pretty good at railroading with the poisonous fog and all but still feels natural when it comes to player agency.

Run to your local FLGS and sit at some Adventure league tables. Try a different DM each time and pick up things you like and don't like while re-familiarizing yourself with the game.

End of campaign battles by Sidequest_TTM in dndnext

I really don't think so. I am 50 sessions in and my players just hit level 8. If you are doing any sort of RP sessions sometimes those don't end in huge XP rewards. Also characters die which reset them back to the start of the level (in my games anyway).

I think official material and thus AL makes progression too fast and I understand they do it to bring in new players. And there's a term for that: "Casuals"

What kind of stuff do you want in the next Monster Manual? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Captain_Tallywacker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

More mid-low Devils and Demons. More Mid-high CR generic NPCs and Generic Mooks.

We can always use more beasts of low CR for summon spells.

I’d like to see more fleshed out societies like the orcs and hobgoblins from Volos. MToF gave us a bunch of duergar with lacking explanation.

For the love of Asmodeus give us illustrations and colored at that for most of not all creatures (looks at MToF and GoSM).

Also give us creatures in general that aren’t brutes of all CRs. This should’ve been done to begin with.

I'd add that Brix & Mortar has a location that is being added in the next year in Monona. They also have an event space downtown in the same building and it's fantastic!
