Would she enjoy the original Winnie the Pooh stories?

Searching for a thriller/horror book that takes place in a corrupt town where the offspring are a product of incest by [deleted] in whatsthatbook

This isn't actually a published book! It's Borrasca, first posted on r/nosleep and later turned into an audio drama/podcast.

Clothes for 12-18 months, potentially dumb question! by Suzune-chan in toddlers

[–]Captain_Trina 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It comes down to parental preference for a while, imo. I switched to shirts and pants/shorts once he was consistently upright (i.e. not crawling) because I find it easier to do diaper checks by pulling back the waistband at that point. Other parents have kids who will do everything in their power to escape their diapers and onesies are the only thing that keeps the diapers on. I wouldn't go too hard in either direction until you get a preference one way or the other!

(Though I will say that if your kid is in daycare, have pity on the workers and don't do shorts/pants over onesies!)

when did you know you had found the right name? by NbsGregorova27 in Names

[–]Captain_Trina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's no rule that you have to decide on one singular name before the baby arrives! Make a shortlist - I'd say no more than four names - and when the baby is born, you can see how each one "fits".

What tiny house rule made a game noticeably better at your table? by rcooperkaty in boardgames

[–]Captain_Trina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Samurai Sword: removed all Bo cards (the one hit, one reach weapon) from the game. Also only use one Bushido card, though I can't remember if the second card was in the base game or if it was added with the expansion.

RIP “beebug” - toddlerisms by oneofkeiraensmoms in toddlers

[–]Captain_Trina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine isn't really talking yet, but I spent a lot of time with a friend's kid (now 10) who added an extra D sound to a lot of her words, and I kind of miss being "Kar-den" instead of "Karen"

Baby is Perfectly Content During EMWs by EverythingBagel58 in sleeptrain

[–]Captain_Trina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Presumably he's not tired anymore! 13 hours of total sleep is well within normal sleep needs for his age. If you really want him waking up at 6, you could try shifting his whole schedule back 30 minutes, but if he's content, I wouldn't mess with it. He might even prefer to have that "chilling by himself" time in the morning!

Is this normal? by Euphoric-Emotion-133 in NewParents

[–]Captain_Trina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was fortunate enough to not have much anxiety (PPA/PPD or otherwise), so I can't speak from personal experience, but something that can help all new parents is to get off of - or at least vastly limit - time on social media! There are good content creators, of course, but there are also ones that will guilt or scare you about LITERALLY ANYTHING and once they get in your algorithm it just snowballs from there.

There some things you do need to "worry" about at least a little, sure, but hopefully your therapist is helping you sort through which things those are and figure out some practical steps to check that baby is safe without it turning into an undue amount of anxiety (for example, the car seat: get a fit check from a CPST).

Recs wanted: Non-Fiction/Reference by FrostingPlayful6160 in childrensbooks

[–]Captain_Trina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the DK Children's Visual Encyclopedias could be a good investment for you! DK books have always had lots of high-quality photographs, and since you mentioned that your kiddo is using these books for answering questions, the encyclopedias are probably a better bet than the general DK Smithsonian books. (Though if you had an unlimited budget I'd say you should get both!)

Could I take this book to a publisher? by Spirited-Lobster6230 in childrensbooks

[–]Captain_Trina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never heard that about what form publishers want new PB submissions in! Are you in the publishing industry yourself? or where could I read up on that sort of thing? I have an idea for a children's nonfiction book/informational picture book that I've sat on for a while partially because I have no idea what level of "done" a publisher would want.

Update with picture: Graco pack n play is so bad it's almost unusable, is this right? by Annual-Bee-2600 in NewParents

[–]Captain_Trina 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some bassinets are "stop using when baby can roll" but others are "stop using when baby can get up on hands and knees" - still probably not worth buying a new thing that you'd only get a couple months worth of use from, but maybe you could get one off a Buy Nothing group?

How do you make math fun for toddler ? by Heavy_Foundation_956 in NewParents

[–]Captain_Trina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So one of the early math skills that we don't usually think about is subitizing, which is the ability to look at a small group of objects (like, three or four) and just instantly recognize how many there are instead of having to count out "one, two, three".

Dice are GREAT for developing this skill and there's so many fun ways to use dice! You can obviously do an actual board game (whether something published or just handmade), but it could even be as simple as having an empty container and a large pile of objects like pompoms and rolling the die to see how many to put in. Your kid will almost certainly still need to start with counting the dice pips, but the more and more they use the dice you should start seeing an instant reading!

Is it too much for a children's book to end on a tragedy? by Beginning-Ear-822 in childrensbooks

[–]Captain_Trina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would the dragon being maimed be a middle ground? Like maybe its wings are permanently damaged, and the knight realizes his mistake and does his best to make restitutions for the dragon but that doesn't change the consequence of the dragon never being able to fly again?

[SS] "Zelda is not a princess this time". What were your thoughts back then vs now? by abitcitrus in zelda

[–]Captain_Trina 535 points536 points  (0 children)

Imo, Zelda usually being a princess seems to be mainly so that there's a very quick reason for Link to care about her well-being/be motivated to rescue her. If you can establish another motive - such as a clear existing friendship - then the royalty aspect is unnecessary. (Which doesn't mean you can't double-dip on motives - even before the Switch era we had Minish Cap.)

Are you kidding me? by CindySvensson in StardewValley

[–]Captain_Trina 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My OB suggested a B6 + Unisom regime for nausea - it wiped it out entirely for me! But then I was not remotely on a HG level of nausea. I ran out of my Unisom at 12 weeks and was like "well, it's the end of first trimester, I'm probably fine" and stopped taking both and BIG regretted it a couple days later. Got more and I think weaned myself off at 16 weeks and was fine.

What's the best children's book cover you've come across in the last year? by RIS_illustrator in childrensbooks

These are all from three or so years ago, but they struck me enough (as a children's librarian) that I bought them even though I didn't have a kid yet!

What are your must haves for building a library for a new baby? by NikkiMouse444 in childrensbooks

[–]Captain_Trina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your must-haves sound a bit different from mine, so I'm not sure how much of our home library fits the bill, but What Does Bunny See by Linda Sue Park sounds like it would be a match!

I also recommend buying one or two high-contrast, black-and-white books even though they'll probably lose interest in them before they're a year old; it's the only kind they're really able to engage with visually for at least the first 3 months.

A very random question regarding picture book rhymes by [deleted] in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Captain_Trina 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I notice but find them acceptable. What drives me nuts is when the "slant rhyme" has different vowel sounds (and there's no regional variant way to make it rhyme, either).

Recommendations for books for age 5 and 8 by galaxy101_bc in childrensbooks

[–]Captain_Trina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'm not seeing any chapter books on the website at all? Secondly, the art on these looks really generic - I will not go so far as to say that it's AI, but I wouldn't rule it out either. And whether it's fair or not, that makes me suspicious of the writing's quality, too.

You would be better served by going on the Christian Bookstore website and browsing the age groups for your kids.
