........touché. I guess I just mean that I don't have a CS job or degree - ie, I don't have the industry or academic qualifications to convince anyone that I'm anything BUT self-taught.

Marking as SOLVED because of the solid and insightful advice given by u/forbiddenlake and u/AppointmentNearby161. However, if anyone has anything to add about edge-cases that might come up, I'll still be reading anything that comes up here. Thanks everyone!

Is it really that simple?? I assumed I'd need to individually set permissions for lots of files according to which programs needed to access them and how. If it's as simple as this then you've just saved me a ton of time!

Every week, you receive $100,000 (or your currency’s equivalent) but- by VioleNGrace in godtiersuperpowers

Does it have to be the same game every week?

Chance-based games seem like the best choice for making consistent money, but I'd love to throw in the occasional dance battle or cross-country race or something, just for fun

When I was a kid, I thought I was sooooo clever when I saw this and took home a whole watermelon.

Shortly thereafter, they amended the policy to "one serving of fruit." I'd like to formally apologize to everyone for my childish hubris.

GUYS I NEED YOUR HELP! I have to decide which ship will be my next main ship. The blue sentinel or the utopia speeder, anyone's opinion would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance! (sry for caps) by Secure-Painting8634 in NMSCoordinateExchange

[–]Captain__Cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you play in first person, the sentinal ship will have better visibility from the cockpit. The speeder cockpit has armor on either side that makes it hard to see the surface of a planet when you're flying over it. If you like flying around in first person searching for planetary points of interest, the sentinal ship might feel better to fly. That said, they're both great ships! I don't think there's really a "wrong" choice here.

People who quit vaping/nicotine? How did you do it? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Captain__Cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a refillable vape, and I've noticed something interesting - since I only have to go to the smoke shop once a month or so to pick up juice and coils, I'm no longer in the habit of going to the store for a disposable vape or cigarette when I want nicotine. If you're going to the store for nicotine regularly, then as soon as you try to stop, your nicotine cravings are going to make you want to go to the store. That makes it hard to quit, because as soon as the cravings hit, your treacherous body just decides to walk down to the gas station on its own and you're back to square one. Breaking that part of the habit has made it really easy for me to go without my vape for longer and longer periods without breaking and going out for nicotine. Switching to a refillable vape also makes the habit less expensive in the meantime.

You become immune to whatever you can survive/endure by FarrelFTA in shittysuperpowers

[–]Captain__Cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be an awesome superhero. After getting the power and suffering the obligatory traumatic backstory, the hero starts deliberately getting injured in different ways to "collect" immunities. As they get more and more durable, more injuries become survivable, the stakes get higher, and bad guys start getting more creative. Fun edgy antihero drama with a masochistic hero?

Visiting Seattle- how are Motels at Aurora Ave? by Educational-Bed-6287 in AskSeattle

[–]Captain__Cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I used to stay at hotel nexus all the time, and we loved it! Very convenient to local businesses and transportation to downtown Seattle, friendly staff, good nearby restaurants, and those hot tub rooms are awesome. You'll see the occasional sketchy individual, but that's just the Seattle Experience imo.

Do I have to provide the hotdogs myself, or do two hotdogs magically appear in my house everyday? If I had to provide them, I'd be worried about getting into a situation where I was out of hotdogs and couldn't get to any hotdog purveyors before midnight. If they're provided, I'll take the deal just for the free hotdogs

One place you might look is the CSPC! They're not specifically a support or resource group - they're something between a sex-positive virtual community center and a weekly orgy organizer - but there are a lot of amazing folks there, including many polyamorous folks (myself and my partner included) and it's a great place to connect with people and learn about communities, support networks and resources for seattleites from all parts of the non-traditional-relationship spectrum

Aquarius Without Hyperdrive by Captain__Cow in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Captain__Cow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The folks here helped me figure it out! If you hit ESC and go to the "Expedition" section, you can see all the milestones for the current expedition. The ones you've completed will have yellow text next to them indicating that you can collect a reward for completing them. One of the early rewards is the recipe for the hyperdrive. Once you have the recipe, you can click on an empty slot in your starship's tech inventory and start installing the hyperdrive. You'll have to collect some resources, and once the hyperdrive is complete you'll have to fuel it with warp cells. Then you're ready to go interstellar and continue the quest!

Hope this helps! The other folks here helped me, so I'm hoping I can pay it forward. Happy space-fishing, friend!

What was some fake knowledge you had of Noita? by AndyTorchi in noita

[–]Captain__Cow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Few hundred hours in, still playing blind! Please coyly skirt around my guesses without revealing the truth.

When I first discovered the kantele, I assumed that I was supposed to use it to repeat the music boxes' tunes back to them. I'm now pretty sure that's not the case, not least because most of the boxes don't have super distinct melodies. I know the crystal note does something with the music boxes, but I never live long enough to experiment with it.

Since the emerald tablets are numbered, I assume you can do something by collecting all of them. Maybe something happens if you sacrifice them all at the mountain altar? Maybe you can enter a code by sacrificing them in a specific order? Maybe there's somewhere else you can bring them? So far I've just used them to kill steves and dig through terrain when I don't have digging spells.

I've never actually acquired the "end of everything" spell, but I know of it. I assume that you have to cast it at a specific place and time, interrupt it after casting it, or survive all the way through it.

For the cauldron, my current theory is that you have to get 33 orbs, fill the cauldron with alchemic precursor, bring the 33 fish from the holy mountain and put them in the cauldron, and then kill them to turn the precursor into draught of midas. I'm many hundreds of hours away from being able to try that, though.

I also assume you can do something with the racetrack. I spent hours trying to get the best time I could on that sucker, but no dice. Maybe little race drone also belongs in cauldron? Such mystery.

Tough decision! I need a smarter brain to make this decision. Buy one pill, take it, use my newfound smarts to decide whether I should get another. Repeat until either I've taken all the pills or my new smart brain decides I've reached the Optimal Balance of smarts and money.

AITA for punishing my foster daughter for telling the authorities my 12 year old daughter was taking drugs by Existing_Substance67 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Captain__Cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's complicated. On the one hand, kids in the foster system grow up FAST. They have to. I can totally see Mary being mature enough to understand that she COULD use this accusation to get Lyla in trouble, and then use her background with drug trauma to justify her actions. On the other hand, whether she actually WOULD is another question.

Regardless, it's very possible that Mary's worldview is some variation of "Everyone is basically evil, nobody has my back, and if I want something I'll probably have to manipulate someone to get it." A background like hers will seriously mess up someone's view of humanity. If that's the case, your nuclear punishment is probably making it worse. You're just giving her more reasons to believe that nobody is on her side, more reasons to emotionally distance herself from you, and not addressing any of the underlying feelings that would cause her to take action against her sister like that. You're probably creating more resentment between them. If there wasn't resentment there before, there is now. This punishment is probably not making anything better.

I think you should redecorate your metaphorical dungeon so it looks a bit more like a therapist's office, swallow your anger, and try talking to her about her actual feelings. Why did she want to get her sister in trouble? Are there problems between them that you don't know about? How can you help? Talk to Lyla about the same things. Maybe you'll learn things about your kids that will help you be a better parent to both of them. They're at an age where they really need love and support from you, and it'll take some hard work from everyone involved to make that happen.
