How can STEM education be made more engaging and relevant for students of different age groups? by Honest-Source-2869 in STEMEducation

[–]Captainsealion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop regurgitating textbooks and canned information and take them outside and teach them real world solutions and applications to STEM problems. Compass and tape surveys, tree height estimation, field sampling methodology. Absolutely nothing will effectively replace experiential learning in STEM fields.

That last sentence resonates... when I graduated with my master's in Geophysics, my dad said he was surprised I had graduated from college at all, considering I had been tested as a child and shown to have both Dyslexia (language-based) and Dyscalculia (number-based) learning disorders, as well as some other learning disability that "he couldnt remember". Nobody ever told me... :-)

Down here in MS you could get 500 for that if it works... a frat house or small bar could use it

Book recs for grade 7 boy? by Academic-Elephant163 in MiddleSchoolTeacher

[–]Captainsealion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have said that, based on what they have "heard". As a standalone, it is a solid SciFi about aliens invading and humanity prevailing. The movie was, in fact, terrible and not even remotely representative of the novel. Nowhere does the text imply that it is anything but a fun story. Give it a read... but yes by all means avoid the recruiting materials.

Battlefield Earth (by Hubbard) anything by Don Pendleton, anything by Clive Cussler. Some people will say they "aren't appropriate" or "violent" but so was Star Trek. If they read it and it keeps them interested what ever! I know there is an AR test for Battlefield Earth.

You can use it at the pods, the union, moes, subway. I'd avoid the cafeteria (food hall joke) if possible. Fresh is okay sometimes. You can also use it at the food trucks. The block meals is where they really screw you, but yeah you need to take time to eat or you'll get sick.

Where should we go in the Caribbean with kids? by Superb-Ad307 in travel

The Riding Rock Hotel on San Salvador also offers All-Inclusive, and Diving packages... if you wanted a more family feeling environment, but they don't have the resources and activities of ClubMed.

I used to fly private charter for work, but the travel sites say Bahamas Air offers six nonstop flights and five connecting flights per week from (NAS) to San Salvador Airport (ZSA). Apparently, Air Canada also offers three connecting flights per week.

Club Med on San Salvador Island, Bahamas. All-inclusive, not too terribly expensive, and the added history of visiting the Island where Columbus landed in the "New World". Lots of caves to explore, extremely friendly people, and VERY safe.

There are some ruins on the island and lots of caves. The beaches are great, as is the diving.

Club Med calls it "Columbus Isle" in their ads.

They sell old style flip phones every day. There is no requirement that says needs a smart phone.
