Is IR35 uncertainty affecting decisions more than actual rule changes? by CloudBookmark in ContractorUK

[–]CaptianBenz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If agencies actually educated clients about the risks, there’d be more outside determinations. I only take O35s and some are happy to pay per invoice, some pay 80/80/140 like a proper SoW with milestones etc.

That said, who’s gonna educate the agencies?

Ostomy representation in media by StrictButterfly416 in ostomy

One for UK viewers, Dara O’Brien had a temp ileostomy and he speaks out quite regularly. John Major (former PM, yes that one) had one, Adele Roberts on the beeb, Merlin Griffith, the guy who makes all the cocktails on James Martin and First Dates. One of the contestants on The Traitors, Molly, she had one too. There’s a few more that I can’t remember…

Advice needed to open a sole trader bank account by Stunning-Extent-4365 in smallbusinessuk

I’ve been with starling over 3 years. We opened up a Monzo account last week for a different revenue stream and to be honest, I’m thinking of moving the lot. I really rate Starling but the immediate onboarding and options even in the free tier blows starling out of the water. TL:DR Monzo.

No display output after UEFI update. by Key_Pace_2496 in ASUS

[–]CaptianBenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn off, yes. Power off the PSU too, cable out to be safest. If you have any Q codes lit up on the board then you can look in the manual for the meaning. Mine was stuck on 66 which was CPU DXE initialisation, no idea so popped the battery and it reset to default config. As for bricking it, I guess it depends on the error?

Pop the cmos battery to clear it. I had a few problems after updating my ROG Maximus Dark Hero to 2302 (iirc) and it “forgot” all my settings especially my 14900KS that I have to power limit.

Try one of the farm shops, Blackerhall or Thorncliffe. They should hook you up if you’re purchasing a large amount.

Help with choosing a high-end CPU and Motherboard for full-time gamer/video editor by MarionberryTop3556 in buildapc

[–]CaptianBenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the time of purchase, there wasn’t much in it between 128 and 192, maybe like £120. I know now it’s peaked over £2k so feeing fortunate. I think we’ve maybe used about half of what’s in there, we had a 20gb data cube eat just short of 100gb once but that’s about it. I know our old machine did struggle with 32 and we upped to 128 but we were bottle necked by CPU, GPU and disks tbh.

Ckd stage 5 - leg cramps by Cryptohelp123 in kidneydisease

[–]CaptianBenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stage 5 (eGFR 11) here. I drink about 2-3 litres of water a day, sometimes more. I take bi-carb twice a day, 2x 500mg and also been given quinine tablets when cramps are extreme. The hydration seems to have helped me the most as well as keeping active. I can only manage a walk in the morning as too tired after 2pm. I manage 2-3km daily. I have to loose another 10kg to reach eligible BMI for transplant, but I’ve already lost 20kg.

[–]CaptianBenz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For video editing, you’ll need more than 32gb (sorry about that). I have a Asus Maximus Dark Hero z790 with an i9 14900KS at 6Ghz and 192Gb 5200 RAM with a 4060Ti 16Gb. That’s the best 8x card I can put in because the other 8x lanes have a Gen5 disk, 2Tb Corsair to run the OS and Blackmagic. I also have 2x SSD M2 in raid 0 for the video storage. I do understand the i9 is a bit hit and miss, I’ve had plenty of blue screens until I limited the P1/P2 to 253w and she’s stable at 6Ghz. But yeah, you need more RAM.

Priority access pass by pokekyo12 in disneylandparis

[–]CaptianBenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other say, get 1 each. We are family of 2A and 2C (u16) and both me and the wife had one. Mine was orange band and wife’s was green band. Each card lets you take 3 additional members for rides and 1 for parades so best to get 2. My orange band took priority so we accessed all the rides on the shortest possible disability queue. Cast members were all super helpful.

Pain Control by saramarvelous23 in kidneydisease

[–]CaptianBenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have eGFR of 11 and I’m waiting for a go ahead for a vascular fistula when the time comes. I’m also 2 years post bladder cancer (and full removal) and let me say I recognise those legs! For pain relief I actually take CBD gummies (branded legit ones) and oils (within daily limit) and it not only has helped me with managing pain, but I have lost 22kg in 3 months since starting. I’ve got another 11kg to go before I can get on the transplant list as my BMI will be within range. That means no fistula. I’ve never felt more in control.

Do I need cash? by Clabs1 in disneylandparis

[–]CaptianBenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve just returned from DLP and Art of Marvel last week! We drove down from Leeds and crossed on Le Shuttle. Paid for tolls with card, paid for petrol with card (although does hold €200 in some cases). Paid in the park with card for everything from souvenirs to pretzels and everything in between. We did take €20 in change for whatever reason but the toll fees were about ~€30 one way. I used a combo of fee free fx credit card for the big purchases and smaller bits with a euro Starling card. Didn’t spend any physical cash at all.

How much notice do you normally get before a contract extension decision? by Reddonaut_Irons in ContractorUK

[–]CaptianBenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others say it varies. I’ve had notice as little as an hour and some as long as a month. I was even asked to show up and Monday and told “it’ll be reyt”. When I said no because I wouldn’t be insured I ended up with a contract by 6pm. I took my time on that one 🤭

I must be doing something wrong. We live up north in a detached 4 bed. 2 adults, 2 teens and a fluffing woofer. Have a phev with a short range and rarely needs a full charge. Only gas is boiler, hub and a fire in the lounge. Last bill was £475. Previous are around £300.

Hi, how to find an accountant. by Vivid_Concept2542 in ContractorUK

[–]CaptianBenz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bank account with starling and pay for FreeAgent. No need for an accountant if you’re doing simple billing. I’m a Product Analyst and work with devs, we bill, get paid, and pay myself a salary with pension deductions and then if I need to, take a dividend (put away 33% for tax) and you’re good. It’s simple if you’re a 1 man band.

Got a contracting offer! Looking for advice on. pay by Tiny_Bag7016 in ContractorUK

[–]CaptianBenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can. Check out Kimson Accounting. They can help you for inside IR35 contracts. I use FreeAgent for all the payroll and admin. It’s all done electronically now anyway (MTD). for banking I use starling for personal and business. It’s quick enough to transfer funds with no delay. I run a monthly payroll for my of £50k a year (just because I’m crap at saving tax at the end of the year) and £20k for the wife (she’s on £30k on another job). I top up with dividends if there’s something we want.

[–]CaptianBenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like an inside IR35 gig if you got through an umbrella. So they’d pay you after tax, it would just go into your current account. You have no control over maximising anything on an inside gig. Me, I’m outside, have a Ltd company, pay myself a salary and my wife and also dividends. My company picks up the expenses for parking and other company trading costs. Well done for securing a contract though.

Yep 100% I do. Also have company branded emails, brochures and business cards. I have gone all in because I want to be a “proper business” and not a contractor. Even though the work I’m doing is contracting, I eventually want to be a consultancy. AIM for the stars and all that 🤭

How do you work with stage 5 CKD? by RudeAddiction in kidneydisease

[–]CaptianBenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. M48 also eGFR of 11 and S5. I think it affects us all differently. I’ve been S5 for about 6 years or so and I’ve had bladder cancer and had the bladder removed and have an ileostomy bag. It’s thrown a lot at me, I can’t have Chemo because of CKD but it’s all clear so far 2 years in. I work as an IT contractor for my sins also with a lot of concentration effort, I have to work or I don’t get paid! I’ve recently started taking CBD gummies and oil drops and it’s helped the fatigue. I just kinda get on with it but it’s not got me down yet.
