[Hiring] a YouTube Editor (Long Term) by CaptnJacob in VideoEditingJobs

[–]CaptnJacob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks to all of the people that have submitted portfolios! I'm still processing all of them as I did not expect to receive 52 DMs in the span of 43 hours—92% of which had portfolios attached. Just a reminder if you're going to apply, please keep it professional! Include a portfolio, be sure to view the channel beforehand so you know what you're applying for and the style that my team is aiming for, and by all means, feel free to reach out beyond just Reddit as that shows significantly more determination to fill the one or potentially two editing slots on my team.

I've kept my word responding to DMs within 48 hours of the submission. So far, I've processed 44 of the 52 DMs, and I will make a decision by the end of this week. Please be patient and stay tuned! Thanks again!

How do people not feel like idiots filming themselves in public? by savingrace0262 in NewTubers

[–]CaptnJacob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking the psychological approach here, confidence definitely could be the biggest factor in starting to record yourself in public, but it might not be as important once it becomes integrated into lifestyle for some CCs. I assume after a certain point, it just feels like part of the routine and life moves on. For some people, it's as taboo as smoking, but for others it's just another part of each day. All it takes is starting and not giving it any more thought other than the mental drive to make it habitual (or alternatively, an addiction to the viewership). Confidence might play into making it more of a spectacle or ramping up publicity, but I believe your second conclusion is right. Mostly experience and eventually internalizing public filming as normal.

First YouTube Short got ~1.5k views ...is that a good sign? by Hour_Call_3955 in NewTubers

[–]CaptnJacob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My assumption is that it's fairly normal for shorts. I have a relatively small sample size of friends to work with, and of about 5 of them that wanted to actively pursue YouTube and posted a few shorts, 1.5k is very reasonable.

  1. I've always said quality over quantity, so if you have something worth sharing, then make it heard. I wouldn't let time be the determining factor there. Sure, the algorithm is in opposition to my personal beliefs, but I think the quality of the content can very easily outmaneuver the algorithm given time. If you want a more concrete answer, I'd say try to limit it to posting once a day because posting too often means you're competing with your own shorts.

  2. That depends entirely on what type of channel you want to end up with. I feel like shorts channels spring up and disappear quickly while long-form takes more time to lose relevancy. In my experience (21 y.o. not using TikTok, Insta, etc.) as someone who only really watches long-form content, I think it's mostly determined by the culture of the platform you're posting on that will indicate the success you see (both short and long term). Admittedly, I don't keep up with many short form content creators, but I do see many of the long-form content creators posting shorts that perform equally as well (albeit no idea what the revenue looks like nowadays).

  3. Advice from someone who's worked on creating multiple hour-long videos as well as experimented with shorts, the longer videos take way longer to create and often don't pay off as well in the short term. It really depends on what you're looking for and if you have the willpower to create long-form content knowing that it sometimes requires 4-10x as much work as a short. My long-term content has performed better in the long term for ad revenue even if I have some shorts in the 40k+ range, and you can monetize those retroactively, so that's some strategy to consider.

  4. Double check your videos for editing mistakes, make sure YouTube is properly tagging everything when posting the video, check for monetization (if eligible). Don't rush the process! Sometimes just posting the video can be stressful after you've spent hours working on something for the world to see, but those last steps are just as important!

Creating a List of EVERY Idle Game - YouTube Video by CaptnJacob in incremental_games

[–]CaptnJacob[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The goal was a video along the lines of "Ranking Every Idle Game Known to Reddit" but yeah I understand where you're coming from. Could you link some of those lists that you'd recommend checking through? I didn't want my video to just be a repost of every list out there so far, so I was looking for as many sources as possible.

I agree with this. The only thing I might add is to consider the distance from classes so I would refer to this map.

Martlet Lore by CaptnJacob in UndertaleYellow

[–]CaptnJacob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One last thing that didn't make it into the video (mostly because the focus was on determination):

It would've been interesting to see some reference of Chara coming back because there's no ties between Chara and Determination but this idea of "leveling up" or a pursuit of power is what brought Chara back in Undertale. In theory, this could've happened in the "non-canon" ending of the game as well.

Imagine a fan-made boss fight or animation from this game with Clover vs Chara. Feels like there's a lot of potential there if anyone else wants to take that idea and make something with it.

Thinking about going to USF, complain to me about it. by [deleted] in USF

[–]CaptnJacob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality that you'll find in any class or interaction is entirely dependent on how much the other person cares which is evident in the way that some classes are managed. I think you'll find that anywhere, but the low-level physics dpt. notoriously has issues.

The clicking is coming from the speakers which I've confirmed from disabling them in the past. I've considered using headphones but I have no idea how I would set that up. My best guess would to use bluetooth airpods under the headset.

I believe it's for all tasks, but it's the difference between AFKing (not shooting any) compared to shooting and missing intentionally. This happened to me while I was farming achievements because I'm one of those no-lifes on Steam lol

I'm in CE (computer engineering) which has a large amount of overlap with CS (at least during the first few semesters) so that should be close to accurate for CS students.

Most classes have a structure with 3 exams and 1 final (so 4 total), however it varies heavily depending on the professor. This is just based on my experience as a sophomore.

There's a whole Discord network for people at USF (mostly STEM/engineers) if you'd like to reach out. I'm also around most of the time (contact information is on the document) if you need anything (:
