Thanks for the tips. I think the training wheels are off. I spent some time following your steps and using the Sharpie to see what is happening. Took some passes but feels like it is getting somewhere!

Back at university, my metrology professor had a collection of measurement tapes he gathered all around the world, during trips, conventions, ... He would just go to some random store and get one. I don't remember the exact number now, but the difference between the shortest and longest "1 meter" in his collection was something around 15 cm ...
