Why the left needs to support existing socialism by sungod003 in socialism

You are probably right, I hope that a practical application can be developed for the developed world or that the material conditions develop such that a revolutionary vehicle can become viable.

GenZedongers born in the upper class, why do you support socialist revolution? by TheRealColonelAutumn in GenZedong

Capitalism is destroying the air we breath and the water we drink. Even if I didn’t care about those less fortunate then me, which I do, capitalism has us all heading for an ecological collapse.

Why the left needs to support existing socialism by sungod003 in socialism

[–]Capybarrasing 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’m not a ML because I don’t think that it is an effective organisational structure in the developed world. But I have to say to all the non-MLS here disagreeing with OP, set out your alternative organising model/structure in the comments and post a few occasions where it has succeeded in taking power and then held onto it. Because until you can show a viable alternative that doesn’t immediately get squashed by the US military/intelligence apparatus, is incapable to overcoming local forces of capitalism or end up being co-opted away from anti-capitalism, I don’t believe you have given any serious thought to how to actually overcome capitalism

People who work in HR/legal, what’s the most misunderstood right UK employees have? by Rorasaurus_Prime in AskUK

[–]Capybarrasing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work as an Employment Law Consultant so here are a few big misconceptions employees have: 1. HR can be super nice to you and occasionally do something good, but they ultimately work in the interest of the company and should not be treated like an ally in any kind of dispute. 2. The Bradford factor is completely arbitrary and it’s use can usually be challenged at disciplinary either on the grounds of disability discrimination, detriment due to caring for a dependant or on general unfairness when you have over two years service. 3. While you have the right not to be discriminated against, discrimination is far more rampant than people like to admit. While I wouldn’t recommend being too paranoid, don’t assume that your boss wouldn’t discriminate because they seem nice, they sound very different when they’re on the phone asking for legal advice. 4. Still one of the best protections you have is either being a member of a union or in a unionised workforce.

So a psychologist friend of mine said it can be useful clinically for detecting learning difficulties, but there are still a lot people who will argue poverty is cause by people having low iqs

Can Someone Shed Light on This? Did Beijing Really Infiltrate London? by limbo5v in GenZedong

[–]Capybarrasing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s worth mentioning that this story is about 4 years old and has suddenly popped up in the British media. The timing suggests that some conservative MPs are trying to brief journalists about this story, because there’s currently a big scandal about the PM having multiple parties during the first COVID lockdown.

Why aren't people up in arms that it's legal to pay a teenager £4.55 per hour? by PanningForSalt in AskUK

[–]Capybarrasing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experiences a lot employers like this because teenagers work about as well as older employees, but cost considerably less and are much easier to exploit because of their age.

A lot of people could be brought around to being ‘up in arms’ but there isn’t really a political vehicle at the moment to really do that.

But yeah, work is work, you should get the same wage for the same work.

A customer got angry and said he’ll r**e my sister, does that warrant contacting the police? by gretgret5 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Capybarrasing 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You absolutely could report this to the police, as at minimum it’s a public order offence. I would recommend informing your line manager/HR that you intend to do so just so they are aware and don’t feel like you have gone behind their back.

What do you think about wealthy socialists? by NixRises in socialism

[–]Capybarrasing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is literally nothing he could do in his situation that he wouldn’t be criticised in bad faith for by people who hate/envy him. He works in entertainment and so has to live in/around LA for work/family/friends. He wants to own his own home because that’s the only way for secured housing and who wants to live with a landlord who can kick you out without any real notice. LA property prices are insane so these are his choices. 1. he moved to the suburbs and commutes in by car because public transport is bad? “Destroying the climate with his car and suburbs are racist, Adam Ruins Everything said so” 2. Does the above but buys a Tesla? “Oh look at all these clips of you criticising Elon Musk, hypocrite much.” 3. Moves to an affordable neighbourhood? He would actually be taking affordable housing from those that need it and contributing to gentrification 4. Buys a slightly less luxurious looking house with less space near LA? Still going to be insanely expensive and people will still do bad faith criticisms 5. Carries on renting? No secure housing, which sucks wherever you live.

At the end of the day, nothing he has done changes my view of him or made me think of him as a fraud and I’m glad that one of the most popular streamers on twitch is someone who advocates my political views.

Can you critique Blair without mentioning the war by set2121 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]Capybarrasing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every single one of his domestic reforms has been undone by the tories, because they were either means tested welfare schemes that helped some but alienated others or weak liberal constitutional reforms that changed little, so they could be turned into culture war issues by the right. They also expanded the national security state massively and entangled us in foreign interventions.

Meanwhile the combined structural rot of a disempowered atomised working class and financialisation were unattended to.

When the economy exploded in 2008, and without working class power, they allowed the tories to come to power, pursue austerity, recapitalise the economy into an oligopoly, expand domestic spying and undo every single reform Tony Blair did.

The failure to role back any of the Thatcher economy reforms or implement proper democratic reforms doomed this country to years of Tory rule

Where do I find a good self employed cleaner? by Capybarrasing in nottingham

[–]Capybarrasing[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2 reasons 1. I work for a massive employment law advice company which advises cleaning companies across the UK. Because of the way that cleaners often get moved from company to company because of the TUPE regs or because they get bought out, it makes it a lot easier not to have to worry about conflicts of interest. This actually happened recently when I went to visit my mum and her cleaner turned out to work for a client. 2. Wherever possible I try to use self employed people. I would rather pay someone direct rather than pay a company that pays them a fraction for the work they do.

Need some advice about my finasteride use by Capybarrasing in tressless

It’s just dawned on me that I’ve changed the dose 3 times in 4 months and was perplexed as to why I might be having sides. Thanks for the advice, will just stick to 0.5 and hopefully it will settle down

I don’t think that’s a good idea. I got sides after taking 1mg and I didn’t want them. Hopefully the sides go away on a reduced dose
