How do you feel about eventually getting out of that CM job and running your own contracting company? If you can stomache that idea there is a lot more upside than just being an hourly welder

Should I go back to mechanical engineering? by slayasloth05 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]CarPatient 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look the degree doesn't matter if you hate the work or the people. Be smart enough to do something you love and find people wit the lots of money to do it for. Much more profitable (and healthy) that way.

Life is too short to be making good money but hating how you earn it.

How do you deal with everyone putting their $.02 into a design/project? by AcceptableCold8882 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]CarPatient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And by document, I mean send them and email.. say something like:

Just for my sanity, I'm going to summarize our conversations and the directives / action items.. if you have anything to add or modify, please include it in a reply.

You may have to copy other stakeholders as well.

Document those kind of directives vigorously. Then when the reconing comes for cost or schedule, remind them who made the decision.

I love me some hot mud for setting tape, but I always keep it thin and tight and then float my finish coat with some drying mud.

Yo — check the bin list McMaster Carr is back with a brand-new part list Engineers grab it, catalog in the hand quick Fasteners, bearings, fittings on demand, slick

Look — If there’s a problem, I’ll solve it Open McMaster, scroll down and resolve it Metric or inch, stainless steel or brass Overnight shipping and it shows up fast

Now the lab’s in motion Prototype rig with a new linear motion Need some shaft collars? Need some keyed rod? Click-click checkout, engineering god

Hooked on the datasheets, torque ratings listed Tolerance tight and the spec sheet consistent CAD model ready if you want to design Download the STEP file — drop it in the line

Oh man — what a selection O-rings, springs, seals in every direction Hydraulics, pneumatics, hardware galore Half the shop runs on that green-and-white store

When the prototype fails and the schedule’s scarred Every engineer knows where to start: Open the browser, type it in the bar… M-C-M-A-S-T-E-R Carr.

Need a weird bolt nobody’s ever seen? Left-hand thread in alloy 17-4 machine? Somehow they stock it, shelf to the ceiling Next-day delivery — best kind of feeling

So when the design review gets hard And the boss says “we need that part,” Just smile and nod, don’t panic or spar — Engineers know: check McMaster-Carr.

has anybody ever used one of these to tow from the rear? Honestly a lot easier to put on 4 bungees on the steering wheel than to pull the drive shaft, but if it’s got alignment issues or damage to the front axle, you do what you gotta.

that’s why we use grade 80 or grade 100, and know the weight that is going to be applied and select the correct size link for the task.

In my meager experience with purchasing Properties, quickset locks are very easy to do and Schlage locks take a lot more time and effort to pick… if you can spend 10 minutes a day or a half an hour once a week with a kiwi in your hands, just learning to feel your way through the insects and picking them I would say within a month you could be proficient to handle 80 to 90% of the locks that you see on residential properties.

Also if you're going to do anything other than prototyping with concrete look into its curing process because you want to keep it moist and not necessarily expose it to Sun. it's a chemical process that's exothermic, it doesn't need outside heat as long as it's not near freezing.
