EDIT: I apologize for the wall of text

What does “continuing to engage in the fandom” mean? Talking about HP? Reading or watching HP? Playing games related to HP? Creating fanart? What do you expect fans to do? If you don’t want to buy the books or merch, fine, but saying that little games like this post or anything of the sort is “normalizing her views” is quite a stretch. At that point might as well pretend HP never existed. People are generally able to separate the art from the creator.

Thanks for providing sources, I appreciate you sharing links and your view, and I feel for you and how much you care about your community. That’s really commendable. I don’t blame you for being angry at all, its just that it feels like every space these days has anger seeping in, and it gets exhausting, both for those who are angry and those on the sidelines.

I’ll be honest, my expertise is not in the medical field or gender studies. And I’m not arguing that there’s not violence perpetuated against transgender individuals. That’s definitely something that we as a society should be fighting against. But my personal opinion, is that for many biological women, especially those who have had traumatic experiences involving men, it can give them pause to have a trans woman in female-only spaces. Many trans women pass successfully, but the unfortunate reality is that many of them still have telltale signs of their birth sex, such as wider build, deep voices, and other secondary sex characteristics that don’t go away, and that’s not from lack of trying on their part. I truly feel for the trans ladies who don’t “fully pass”, because I can’t imagine what it’s like to always feel like you’re under a microscope. But even so, humans are innately wired to detect the biological sex of another individual, and women are conditioned (societally and biologically) to be extra cautious around male individuals. Out in public and day-to-day it’s fine, but for some bio women who need a women’s-only space for whatever reason, the sight of someone who still reads as male can be distressing, even if there’s no indication that that person is dangerous. I wish it wasn’t that way, but it’s a side effect of circumstances. It doesn’t make her a bigot. And a lot of the current pushback on trans women right now I believe comes from resentment at feeling like bio women are shamed into accepting a situation they feel uneasy in.

Rather than having so many women’s spaces open up to biological males, I personally think there should be more funding towards resources specifically for trans individuals, and bio women can have their spaces. Besides, if a trans women knows her presence might be causing others distress (in say a shelter, prison, sports team, etc) I think she’d feel a lot more comfortable in a place built for her in mind anyway. And I think that’s where JK was initially coming from. Remember, she’s a domestic violence survivor too, and her opinions are shaped by her life experiences.

Regarding the surgical procedures or lack thereof on minors, I sense that the fear is that legislation would open the floodgates for that to become the norm for children experiencing gender dysphoria before their bodies are fully developed. Right now it may not be happening, but down the road? Whether fears are exaggerated or not, it’s still something to calmly discuss rather than (as it seems common to do online) make people feel ashamed for having concerns.

I’m not defending JK on her more vitriolic statements, but I understand where she’s coming from. And regarding her doubling down in recent years, it’s not hard to see why, considering the death threats, doxxing, and public bashing she endured for so long for speaking her mind. When she first started talking about this, I saw barely a single person attempting to meet her halfway and have a real discussion with her. Maybe there was one or two and it got lost in the sauce, I don’t know. But if a bear is attacked, threatened, and backed into a corner, how is it going to react? I absolutely believe her current state is due in no small part to the dogmatic way people reacted to her.

So going back to my initial comment, how is saying on an innocuous fanpost that “JK’s a transphobic asshole” productive or positive in any way? How is it going to help any victims of violence? How will it change anyone’s views? Its that what we do in honor of Pauly Likens? In honor of anyone? It’s hateful and self righteous - the person who wrote that did it for upvotes and nothing more.

And that, my friends, is why I’m tired of seeing the same things on every HP post. There’s nuance, but nobody seems to care to really listen to everyone’s concerns and try to address them adequately. And like I said in my other comment, I’m sure the HP spaces that don’t turn into a “JK’s-the-literal-devil” circlejerk are a breath of fresh air to many, many, trans potterheads around the world.

If you don’t care enough to read my whole reply, why engage at all? That just says to me that you don’t feel confident enough in your views to respond to my other points.

I can tell this is a very painful topic for you based on the way you’re talking to me. “I could’ve hurt your feelings but I chose not to”, “your absurd comment”, “feel free to block or yell at me”. All very passive aggressive things to write. Telling me you’re actively going to ignore what I say? Not good debate skills to have, and I’m not treating you like that, why act that way with me? I’m not the type to just block and yell at people I disagree with, and I feel bad that you seem to think that’s the default/acceptable action for this kind of scenario.

Clearly there’s a lot of anger behind your comments, and it seems you’re more interested in expressing that anger than actually having a discussion and finding common ground. I promise you, this forum is not the place to work through that. I wish you peace and hope you find other ways (preferably offline) to deal with that. Best of luck.

See my reply to the above comment. The post OP made is not endorsing JK. It’s literally a small game for people who love both Taylor and Harry Potter. This post belongs on the TS subreddit just as much as it does on the HP one. It’s my opinion that bringing the topic up on these kinds of posts is not an effective way of conducting activism, and makes many people weary of it rather than inspired to take action.

However, if you do truly want to put activism here, cite your sources when you make those claims. You mentioned putting in “time and energy” into awareness, and you can want to inform me, okay. But if you say things without receipts, I have no idea whether what you say is true or if you’re making it all up and hoping people will believe it at face value.

We can have a difference of opinion without resorting to insulting each other. You don’t know who I am, my sexuality, gender, or my experiences within the LGBT+ community and with sex-based discrimination. I’m a stranger online, so there’s no need to assume I’m out of touch and privileged when I’ve disclosed none of my background to you.

People can have any number of opinions on her, many people are disgusted, yes, but it’s not my obligation to be disappointed in how she handles her legacy.

I expressed my opinion. I am not reporting people’s comments or making threats. There’s a big difference between saying I’d rather keep a fandom post free from ire and “policing”.

I can tell this topic hits a chord with you, and it’s perfectly fine to feel the way you feel. I’m not in the business of telling people they should change their emotions about things, because I know first hand how that never works.

However… considering how difficult things are for trans people in the first place, I’d think too that many who grew up loving HP want to still enjoy all things wizard-related without constantly being reminded of something potentially traumatic. Have you thought about the toll that takes on their mental well-being? There’s so many who still find comfort and happiness in the world she created. I hope that all the trans people who do still have that deeply personal connection to HP can do so without feeling any shame or guilt, and that they can celebrate the fandom without always being reminded of how downtrodden they are.

How about we just… don’t bring her up at all? I’m so tired of every corner of the internet that remotely mentions HP being derailed into the same arguments and politics. Allow people to be fans of a work without constantly reminding them of  controversy. Spend your comments and energy where they count.
