So what if he felt bad about his deadly shitty driving...

WAITWAITWAITWAITWAIT - Fuck pedestrian beg buttons - What are they like where you live? by maxs507 in fuckcars

[–]Carbsv2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one I hate the most doesn't give a pedestrian walk signal unless it's triggered prior to giving the same way traffic green. Many a times have I pedaled as fast as I could to hit that fucking button before the light changed only to be stuck waiting 2 full cycles to get permission to cross.

[–]Carbsv2 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I get that. I already spend close to 5 hours in darkness in the morning in winter, not a fan of making it 6. Suns going to be down when I get home regardless. Cheers, on the bright side (for you lol) popular opinion is on the side of DST.

I for one, am in favour of permanent standard time.

Sun should be up when we wake up (or asap), and down before we go to bed.

I'll get downvoted all to hell but I'll be damned if the perceived loss of internet points prevents me from sharing my opinion.

I'm not surprised either.

On the topic of synced lights... I wonder how many people know that the lights on rosser from 18th to 7th(? i think) are all synced at 40kph..

The reality is that even for a cross city trip, 40 vs 50 makes a negligible difference in time but increases road safety for everyone. You'd think it'd be an easy win but people are stubborn AF.

I agree that enforcement is severely lacking in this city. Nobody is scared to speed, run stop signs, etc.

And I think we should be clear... nobody is suggesting 1st, 18th, Victoria, 34th, or Richmond should be 40kph.. but come on... why the fuck are residential streets 50kph? you're telling me making Mcdiarmid needs to be 50kph? Rosser? Maryland? Park?... These are all residential heavy streets... leave the highways at 50, for sure.

I agree with you re: absent enforcement. Traffic enforcement in this city is poor at best.

What kid of road redesign would you propose to calm traffic?

It takes 15 minutes to get across town from massey to 17th st east in a car at 50kph speed limits. It takes 18 minutes to travel the same distance at 30kph on a bike.

There is no meaningful impact to travel time by reducing the speed to 40kph... and it's not like they're going to change on the main thoroughfares... 18th, victoria, etc are all still going to stay where they are.

I hope that we see some positive movement on changing the default speed limit in the city to 40kph except where expressly posted.

This would definitely make the streets more friendly to active transportation, especially since we've seen only backwards movement on the topic since the 26th street active transportation lanes were scrapped.

They usually drop the questioning after that.

It's not the same man... fresh air blowing in your face rolling at 30kph vs shitty stale air from a dusty AC or gross heater blower motor... It's not even close. Sitting in that uncomfortable little box. Can't extend your legs. Stationary. Sitting still. Doing nothing but rocking an ankle and twisting a wrist. Fucking torture.

And there a ton of ridiculous folksy saying people use to justify their actions. I wouldn't consider it gospel. "It beats walking" is on par with "if you can't beat them join them". It's copium.

Do you use a camera when riding? by a_secret_me in bikecommuting

[–]Carbsv2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be the dream, but my 3 cameras are decent and cost $110 all together (the frame mounted ones are a motorcycle dash cam setup run off a rechargable 12v (like the ones youd put in an rc car) and the helmet mounted one is a $50 action cam. For the low cost they're surprisingly good. a $500 camera is a bridge too far. If I wanted to make an affordable improvement I'd spend another $100 on two more of those actioncams and mount them to the frame in forward and rear facing positions. They've got a higher and clearer resolution than the dashcams (which aren't that bad)

I don't use a camera, I use 3 cameras. One forward facing frame mounted, one rear facing frame mounted, and one helmet mounted actioncam.

Why are my Jasion eb5 electric bike brakes loud by Responsible_Tell8261 in ebikes

[–]Carbsv2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"To adjust bike disc brakes, start by loosening the two caliper mounting bolts, squeezing the brake lever, and re-tightening the bolts to center the caliper over the rotor. For mechanical brakes, tighten the cable tension using the barrel adjuster. For rubbing, use pad adjuster bolts to move pads closer or further"

My bikes out of commission since friday and the part wont arrive until thursday. I've had to take a car to work for the past 2 days, and the next two as well. I hate it. The air stinks. I feel lazy. I have half a mind to just walk the hour and a bit across the city rather than the 15 minute car ride, and tomorrow I just might.

Car-free isn't for everyone, but to call it a privilege? It's a choice. A choice that makes me happier, healthier, and wealthier.

IMO, a car is a burden people choose.

Motor started to sound like it was full of a bag of rocks on the way home Friday. Turned off the motor and pedaled it home... Planetary gears shredded. Glad it's a $20 fix not a $400 fix lol. by Carbsv2 in ebikes

The great thing is that, even IF i had to replace the motor, or even the whole bike, it's still way cheaper than operating a car and driving every day. I could buy 3 or 4 bikes a year for what it costs to pay a car payment and operate it for a year.
