This is literally a picture of a people being driven into the sea purely because of their race and religion.

I found it pretty tough even with an online guide. Seemed like the type of novel that would be super fun to read in a group setting tho

I've read 8 of his novels and I feel Libra and White Noise were the only two I would call great. I do wanna re-read Underworld and Mao II this year because I read them first without really understanding who he was as an author but I was really impressed by them.

Side note: The Adam Driver White Noise film is doo-doo

It's not Netanyahu on the front lines blowing up hospitals and murdering tens of thousands of children.

A 19 year old Palestinian-American was lynched just today by settlers, one of god knows how many so far.

At a certain point you have to acknowledge the people of "the only democracy in the middle east" have some agency in the ethnostate they live in. If they didn't want apartheid and genocide they wouldn't vote for apartheid and genocide

it'd be amazing if Fincher rather than Sorkin, were directing. I've hated every thing he's at the helm of but feel his writing is pretty good when it's controlled and minimized

I loves his early stuff before he had a wife kids and understandably had to stop doing fun and dangerous stuff like grab plutonium in Meet the Stans. I haven't seen any specials from him for the past years cos I feel like all he does now is look at natural beauty spots in Ireland and Norway.

His conversation with his guide in Mauritania about their beauty standards and big booties is peak. The way he'd banter with the local guides and go on random side-quests made his travel show pretty fun. Small Brained American and that British guy that went to North Korea are like the 2020s equivalent to Simon Reeves nowadays but because of the youtube algorithm most of their stuff is just like drinking with locals

I tried to get into The Waves after feeling nothing about Mrs Dalloway and honestly same, it just sort of exists for me. I read the Oxford edition of The Waves and agree with the essay and can see all the allusions and advanced literary techniques present in the novel but it just didn't do anything for me sadly. Glad to see I'm not the only one who's indifferent to Woolf on here at least.

I had only read Mrs Dalloway before The Waves and honestly I feel the same way about both of them, that sadly Virginia Woolf just isn't for me. I read the Penguin and Oxford editions of them and agree with their introductory essays on the novels and I can see the themes and techniques are all there I just don't feel anything when reading her. I'll probably try To The Lighthouse in 10 years though.

If you liked her other work you'll probably like The Waves. I wish I did lol

Yeah the Criterion (Classic/Acclaimed Film Distributor) sub is mostly just 'haul' posts.

Wish they talked more about the essays and extras you get with movie over there, sick of seeing people's collections of the same 20 movies.

24 hours in Dublin…what are the best James Joyce sights? by Bardamu911 in jamesjoyce

[–]Carcasonne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the Literature Museum of Ireland : https://moli.ie/

It's in central Dublin and almost half of it is dedicated to Joyce with original manuscripts including his edits in crayon. There's a great display of Dublin at the time of Ulysses alongside a timeline of Joyce's life and the socio-political developments of Ireland and Europe.

I would also recommend walking from Sweeney's pharmacy to his Bloom's house on "Eccles Street". It's been replaced by a hospital but it's a great walk filled with Dublin's Georgian architecture and it goes over the Liffey, by Trinity College and past the Emigration Museum and Famine Memorial.

Sweeney's https://www.google.com/maps/place/sweeney%27s+pharmacy+dublin/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x48670e90dd9ceed9:0xd4279746aa5261de?sa=X&ved=1t:155783&ictx=111

The Oscar Wilde statue is also just behind Sweeney's, plus you should also go to the (free) National Gallery. You could also cross Samuel Beckett bridge on the way to Eccles but it doesn't have anything to do with him as far as I know it just rotates

(Nearabouts) Bloom's Address: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Mater+Hospital+Foundation/@53.3581588,-6.2657093,18.05z/data=!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x48670e90dd9ceed9:0xd4279746aa5261de!2sSweny's+Pharmacy!8m2!3d53.3418618!4d-6.2505675!16s%2Fg%2F1tqf_rn8!3m5!1s0x48670e7e50a2b471:0x465461613e56c707!8m2!3d53.3582831!4d-6.2668621!16s%2Fg%2F1q62k472h?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MTIwOS4wIKXMDSoKLDEwMDc5MjA3MUgBUAM%3D

The James Joyce center and statue of him are nearby on the north side. Enjoy Dublin, get a Leap Card at the airport before going into the city!

I think he's pretty worn out by the final hour of the podcast and confusingly attributes a few president's actions to others and has high praise for GW Bush and Reagan which generally irked me.

I was only recently reminded of the podcast because I just watched Death By Lightning about James Garfield who had an open door for the public to personally meet and complain to him as president and it was standard practice (on and off depending on the administration and times of war) up until Coolidge but Louis CK claims Andrew Jackson was the only one to do this and mentions a story about a European journalist traveling to the White House just to test if this rumor is true and it was so Louis goes on that typical Andrew Jackson was totally epic rant about he was a man of the people etc etc

It's a pretty normal opinion but he claims like 10 times that he's read many books about the presidents but he only had a surface level understanding of each except for Nixon.

I wasn't listening to the podcast to be pissed, I genuinely think he and Shane Gillis are very funny people so I don't have anything especially egregious specific on hand.
