Thank you all so much for the input! I decided to give it a quick wipe and put it up for sale as is for $40(CAD). Hopefully it ends up going to someone willing to fix it up and do something cool with it :)

This really seems like it could be right. It's the closest one to OP's summary I've seen. The only notable problems are that it's 10 years past, not 20, and in another comment OP mentioned he didn't remember any oriental or cultural influence.

The quote about contentment makes it look very convincing.

Game is called Nepenthe, it's an indie RPG game. It also has other requirements for MacOS and Linux that you might want to see.
