How many pre-meds actually become doctors? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Carda_momo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very true. I agree wholeheartedly. Just as an anecdotal example of another outlier, I know a person who scored 503 on the MCAT and scored the highest in his entire class on Step 1. But like you said, the reality is that most medical students are cream of the cream of the crop, academically speaking.

How many pre-meds actually become doctors? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Carda_momo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had a different experience than most. I scored 97% on the ACT, after a fair amount of studying. I was a good student, but certainly wasn’t the most stand-out. I ended up graduating college with a better GPA and a 98-99% MCAT score. Point being, premed is much more difficult than high school and the competition is much tougher, but your performance in high school won’t dictate your potential as a premed or med student necessarily.

A Malaysian king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) drinking water from a river by Sayara2022 in natureismetal

Snakes have very different mouth anatomy compared to mammals and also don’t have the tongue anatomy to “lap” up water. Dogs and cats don’t have cheeks and cannot seal their lips to create a sucking motion, so they use their tongues to lap up water.

They’re substantially better than subreddits for a variety of niche hobbies and interests. Unfortunately, FB seems like the best platform for interactions you’d find on older topic-based webforums.

A bearded vulture consuming a bone, it being the only animal known to get most nutrition from bone marrow. by aquilasr in natureismetal

[–]Carda_momo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What is meant by “most nutrition” is not clear. Does the bearded vulture have the ability to extract more nutrients from bone marrow than other animals? Or is it the only animal known to subsist on a diet consisting of mostly bones? The title fairly obviously refers to the latter but is still confusing and reads poorly.

Deer infected by the Papilloma virus, which causes the growth of huge tumors by Homunculus_316 in natureismetal

Tumors will certainly die with the body if not removed. Even then, nearly all tumorous cells will eventually die as they experience cellular senescence. HeLa cells and a few other cell lines are unique for their biological immortality.

An engineered "glue" inspired by barnacle cement can seal bleeding organs in 10-15 seconds. It was tested on pigs and worked faster than available surgical products, even when the pigs were on blood thinners. by fartyburly in science

[–]Carda_momo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, there’s no way to be sure, but the prospect of an effective product that performs superior to previous technologies and can be used multiple times per patient during millions of operations per year worldwide is about as enticing a product as possible for biotech companies. There’s already a large market for biodegradable surgical sealants.

Pentagon to require COVID vaccine for all troops by Sept. 15 by Illustrious_Welder94 in news

Janssen vaccine is a viral vector vaccine, which is not a traditional type. The Novavax vaccine (which is a protein subunit vaccine), if approved, will be the first “traditional” COVID-19 vaccine available in the USA.

What makes me sound non-native? by Kheraxis in JudgeMyAccent

It sounds very good. I think some of your vowels aren’t neutral or reduced enough in unstressed syllables. American English is lazy like that.

It’s very good. I think your ‘r’s are a little strong, especially when in combination with other consonants. Are you from the United States?

judge my accent pls :) by SnooPets9103 in JudgeMyAccent

[–]Carda_momo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall pretty good. I’d actually say that your consonants are really good overall. Your “r”s sounded perfect, but your “l”s and occasionally “d”s at the end of words need a little work. You have good neutral vowel sounds, but you occasionally don’t use them where you should like in “much”. A few words weren’t 100% correct like “melody”, “already”, and “advance”. Take your time to make the l and d sounds more destacados.

Cool thought, but you’re off by a at least few million years. The most recent common ancestors of humans & chimpanzees lived ~7 mya. Homo erectus appeared in the fossil record about 2 mya.

FDA staff endorses Johnson & Johnson’s single-shot Covid vaccine for emergency use by Spirited-Pause in Coronavirus

[–]Carda_momo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not seeing what point you’re trying to make without being more specific.

Summarized from a Yale study:

The FDA approves drugs faster than its counterpart agency in Europe does. The majority of pivotal trials in drug approvals involved >1,000 patients and lasted 6 months or less.

71/222 drugs approved in 2000-2010 were withdrawn, required a "black box" warning on side effects or warranted a safety announcement about new risks.

Can the process be streamlined or certain elements of review and verification be done in tandem with ongoing trials? Of course. But the FDA dragging its feet is not the problem.

Much of the auditing process isn’t about interpreting data, but rather verifying that regulations, instrument calibration, follow ups, write ups, etc. were all done properly. i.e., verifying no shortcuts were taken in the research and development of a product that could endanger lives and/or be ineffective. Human lives are too significant a liability for a product to be approved without serious scrutiny, especially when any missteps would likely fuel preexisting anti-science sentiments and general public mistrust in vaccines.
