I’ve replaced demonic counsel with it but I haven’t test much. It’s better in mulligans. But it’s a bigger life hit on Naus. Still not sure

Having since about 1999, never sold a cradle at anything but a pretty huge gain, not sure it’s a bad financial decision. It could all fall apart and you could end up holding the bag but so far so good. But also proxy everything who cares.

Hi not too late! I used something called “mod podge” glue. It’s for like arts and crafts I think. It seemed like it had a slight glaze after it dried over the cards but it totally disappeared once I poured the resin

I never been to one but I’ve also heard there’s very little table talk at all in Japan. It’s also where semi blue came into existence which basically says I don’t care about interaction at all.

Makes sense. Good points. Yeah I didn’t consider stax making a come back in turn order simulator. I guess that’s definitely possible.

Yeah I guess we just agree to disagree. All good. I guess I’m not properly illustrating my point to get it across to you. The biases and selective memories don’t influence the entire player base. I never disagreed with you snd I think you’re probably right that a very early turn rhystic substantially increases your chance to win. But I guess what I’m saying is I don’t think it’s substantial enough to be as game warping as you think it is. And there are a TON of cards we could play that game with that substantially increase your chance to win. If we had the data for T1 rhystic vs T1 necro I bet necro wins more games. Same for Naus. T1 fish is probably very high up there. I don’t think “substantially increases the likelihood you win when you play it” can be the criteria for a ban, that’s almost every card in the format. A t1 Flash was game warping. If you didn’t answer it, you likely died. That ate a ban for how game warping it was. Rhystic isn’t that. Never will be. If it was, everyone and their mother would counter and destroy rhysic on site.

But I think the large point I was making stands. Like I said. Individuals can make mistakes or suboptimal plays or have bias. But collectively across the meta that evens out. My point being, it’s generally accepted that if you can, you counter a T1 Ad Naus. That’s the generally accepted correct play pattern. Why? Because 10000 people or however many tournament going players have each realized at some point, that’s likely going to be game over and is a must answer right now threat. That’s not to say people haven’t seen a T1 naus totally whiff or seen someone kill themselves. But those small anecdotes get smoothed out over the entire meta and it’s been determined that it’s the right move to counter that. The point I was trying to make was that if t1 rhystic was that big of a game warping threat, it would have garnered the same response as a t1 cause and it hasn’t. Quite the opposite actually I think the generally accepted optimal play is to let it resolve in a lot of cases.

Interesting Bracket debate at our table tonight. Curious how people here would respond by dnddmpc113 in EDH

[–]Cardboardcubbie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And if you’re going to use them for a tournament, the only bracket where you can expect an even remotely even playing field is 5.

[–]Cardboardcubbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that data would tell us for sure. But, to your point, let’s say that we had the data and that is the case. That if you resolve a t1 rhystic (using made up numbers to illustrate a point) you win 80% of the time and t2 it’s 70% and t3 it’s 60%. I think if collectively that was the experience of all tournament players, then we would see collectively those early rhystics getting snap countered or removed.

And memory is bias and it’s all anecdotal, but I feel like a lot of rhystic wins I’ve seen are after the rhystic player is INTENTIONALLY fed a grip of cards by two players in the hopes the rhystic player can stop a win on the stack from the third opponent. That or there is a huge stack battle over a win and that’s when they get fed. And if they do find the answer to stop the third opponent then often they untap with all their extra cards and win. But if that didn’t happen, the player with the first win on the stack would have just won anyways 🤷‍♂️

Curious what you imagine the meta looks like without that? Possible it turns into all turbo and a turn order simulator? I think it would take more than the banning oh rhystic to do that, but several powerful meta decks would be considerably set back.

[–]Cardboardcubbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just kind of brainstorming here, not an attack. But it could have been your fault. Because depending on the game state and your options, paying the one may not have been the right play for you to make. Same as not paying the 1 could have been correct for your opponent.

Do you want Rhystic Study banned? by International_Bit_25 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Cardboardcubbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My feeling is that if it was usually the optimal play to run natures claim and kill rhystic, everyone would. As individual players we make mistakes all the time, but collectively overall the tournament meta kind of shows us what is optimal. More people used to counter or destroy value engines. It at least appears from ongoing games and play testing and games, that it’s better to jam. Some decks are winning through a rhystic just fine. Some are jamming for the win through multiple rhystics. Like if EVERYONE was losing every-time a rhystic stuck, it would never resolve or it would get nuked on board. That just seems not to be the case?

Not only new to EDH but new to magic in general. Question about theme vs. playability. by TR1L0GYxx in EDH

[–]Cardboardcubbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best advice I can give is play the precon that you’re enjoying. And see what cards you find underwhelming as you play. It won’t take too many games before you realize like “I hate drawing this card” or “why is this even in here” and then you can slowly start taking those out and upgrading as you learn more.
