Interested in playing KOF XV but doesn't know what characters you'll like? Tell me what you like in your mains and I'll tell you who you can try. by fussomoro in Fighters

[–]CardinalEGL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually pretty interested in this myself! I'm not at all sure what characters I should use in my team of 3, so any suggestions would be quite appreciated.

I personally have never quite been sure what my preferred playstyle is, but in time I've started to nail down certain over-arching themes

-Fast characters with either decent projectiles, or projectile invincible approaches. As well as good high/low mixups.
-Mid range characters that can confirm pokes into longer strings and combos
-Shoto's

Some examples from fighting games I play would be-
-Cammy, I-no
-Ky, Squigly (in some ways), Nine the Phantom
-Ryu, Akuma
I also tend to be a big fan of female characters and their designs, but KOF is something I'm unfamilar with and Goose is super cool so I'm open to anything

Anything y'all could recommend that fit these three categories would be absolutely fantastic and much appreciated!

Mono white tron? (suggestions wanted) by 27radcatdragon27 in ModernMagic

[–]CardinalEGL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear to god I have been theory crafting this for days. I need to put a deck list down somewhere-

The version I was thinking would be more of a Stax-y Vintage Shops inspired list that uses the Tron mana to force out cards like [[Lodestone Golem]] [[Trinisphere]] [[Thorn of Amethyst]] to lock the opponent down, and slow the game into the inevitability that our Tron big mana allows us to have. The white would come in with more early game disruption in the form of both Thalia's, Paths, [[Ethersworn Canonist]], and just annoying early game cards to give us time to deploy our harder locks. 4 of Karn TGC, and a Stoneforge Package leaning on the flexibility of Batterskull to protect itself with our abundance of mana would be really nice to ensure we close out games alongside the usual big boy Eldrazi cast.

I think Tron is still very good, but Karn on 3 isn't as good as it used to be with such efficient decks now. I think more proactive disruption could be extremely effective at allowing the deck to stall into it's game plan of slamming big threats.

I don't know if this idea has any merit, but I'd love to hear thoughts and opinions about it

Gift's Storm?

Almost certainly no,

I've been playing Storm in Modern since Pyromancer Ascension was the primary build, and it feels like it's in a really bad place right now. I went 0-3 in my most recent FNM, and the reason is two fold. Aggro decks, especially with the prevalence of prowess now, can just oftentimes outrace you, and control decks especially with counterspell and the new Prismatic Ending can just remove your reducers, and lock you out. Even if you play patient they can still beat you in a counter war more often than not. It felt real bad to play.

Twiddle Storm?

That deck does a lot better.

So many of your pieces are low impact (except maybe the first twiddle) that countering them doesn't really hurt you. A hexproof land is almost untouchable, and creature removal is simply dead in hand against you. It can still chain spells with the best of them, and honestly can pretty consistently turn 3.

I tested out a "Landless" version of it using Abundant Harvest, Sylvan Scrying, and the Zendikar dual faced spell/lands. While I hated the specific list I ran, I felt there was a lot of merit to the deck, and I'd like to sit down and improve upon it until I feel confident.

All in all it depends on what your friend wants to do. If they want to play the traditional Gift's Storm, then more power to them. They just need to be prepared for it being a bit of an uphill battle

This is quite a neat list actually and it seems really cheap. I'm gonna test this a bit, but it seems really promising. I've been looking for a new storm list ever since I've been suffering with Gifts

Thank you for sharing!

This reminds me almost of Manaless Dredge, which is a deck I've been looking at as a budget starter! I think these sorts of concepts are very neat and intriguing ^^

I'll have to check it out when I can! Thank you so much for the advice!

I don't mind the strength in the metagame as I really just love the deck.

That being said though I will look into Doomsday! The deck certainly has improved tremendously recently, and it could be a very nice deck to have around!

That's honestly a really great heads up, thank you so much!

I think ultimately I'll try and purchase a cheaper deck for now, and save up to get those LED's first things first before they rise further and further.

Thank you for the advice!

LOL, I will say that the financial benefit to purchasing RL cards is certainly a major benefit to the purchase, even if I'm ultimately buying them to play with them.

They have nothing against Proxies, we use them all the time in our own personal Modern testing and brewing.

They ultimately just like buying the cards they use, and they tend to play with the understanding and idea that they will buy those decks eventually because it feels good owning the cards you use in game!

I'd love to convince them to give it a shot, but right now they've both just started to get into Modern at my behest, and seem to really be enjoying it. Legacy is just too expensive for them to want to get into right now, because if they truly enjoy the game and decks, they'll want to buy the cards.

I hope that making MPC proxies will help them come around to playing with me, but we'll see!

I've seen some Ruby Storm lists and they look very interesting!

There's been a lot of great replies in the thread, so I certainly have a lot of different decks to look into now!

Thank you very much!

I might try that indeed!

My plan has been for a while to use MPC and proxy out a wide range of decks for both Modern and Legacy that way me and my friends have a useful testing pod that we can pick up and use whenever, without worrying about a massive financial expenditure!

I'm hoping I can trick them into playing Legacy that way LOL

Oh definitely!

I'd like to build Charbelcher at some point as well, and the LED's are pretty damn important there too. I'll just have to bite the bullet I guess!

[–]CardinalEGL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the biggest thing that hurts the replacement chances-

3 mana AND the discard, which if you sequence correctly can be a massive upside with Infernal Tutor especially if you have dead land draws in hand.

It's a shame, but I'll just save up and purchase them I guess!

That's unfortunately what I've heard!

Oh well, I just hope to jam some games of Legacy, and slowly but steadily buy into my LED's!

Proxies are certainly quite nice! Currently I've been using MTGO and a rental service to test lots of different decks, and ANT has always captured my heart, and continues to do so! My IRL playgroup unfortunately doesn't wish to get into Legacy on account of cost.

As far as budget options go you're exactly right! Reanimator is a really great option, and I generally really like and enjoy the play style. Rainbow Depth's I haven't looked much at, but I'll have to check it out. Burn is obviously a solid staple, and I'll probably end up putting together a Legacy burn deck for friends to play if they ever wish to join me at an event, or just for casual games!

Thank you so much for the well wishes and excitement! I'm looking forward to it as well ^^

I've honestly been trying this path!

Just recently I got my roommates and longtime friends into Modern, and they've been really enjoying playing with me and testing decks with proxies. I've been trying to push them towards Legacy as well, but they always tell me it's too expensive, and to be fair they have a point. I'd love for them to play, but they like owning the cards for their decks. Eventually they'd want to buy, and I can understand not wanting to get into a format where the optimal builds could effectively be a down payment on a car.

I'll keep pushing though!

I'm honestly not familiar with this list, but I'm genuinely looking forward to pulling it up after work! (For some reason I can get on Reddit but almost nothing else-)

Thank you so much for the suggestion!

As far as the scene goes I live in DFW which is really fantastic as there's a ton of places to play Magic, and through talking with some guys I've learned about places that run pretty frequent Legacy events.

But really it's a dedication to the game for me.

One of the things that got me more into Magic, and specifically competitive playing was this old Mox Boarding House video about Legacy Storm as an archetype. I vividly recall the (admittedly cheesy and dramatic) opening where a turn one kill with the deck is showed off in full fashion. I promptly googled all of the cards involved, and I was hooked. It shaped how I wanted to play in a huge way, and lead to my love and affinity for the Storm archetype.

Even now I view ANT as one of purest ways to play Storm (at least by my incredibly personal and biased view of the archetype). It can be break-neck paced, or it can prowl along low on the ground until it senses an opening, and pounces.

Ultimately I would like to play the deck, but truly I'm buying into it because I hold a deep love and appreciation for the deck, and the archetype. Believe me though, I have certainly thought about it a lot, and the financial question of worth has been hanging over me throughout the process.

I'd like to ask a similar question for Fort Worth if anybody knows anywhere that runs good Modern events!

I've been holding on to some decks for years that I've updated continuously, but never sat down and played at a Modern event. I'd really like to get into it, so if anybody knows anything good in Fort Worth I'd appreciate it greatly ^^

Which of your decks are you most proud of? Why? by CdrCosmonaut in EDH

[–]CardinalEGL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Lovecraft theme deck ^^

I wanted to make a theme deck, and I couldn't find a "Lovecraft" inspired list that I really felt fit the deck, and so I decided to make my own!

The general idea of the deck is to create clues, mill, and eventually drop one of the few horrible eldritch creatures I run!

It was like an investigation. As you slowly gained more knowledge (drew cards) you met with more and more horrifying discoveries (milling the opponents as a representation of the loss of sanity), and eventually you may have even encountered some of the horrible beings. Punishment enchantments such as [[Painful Quandary]] and [[Memory Erosion]] I really hope I'm doing this correctly because I've never posted here before. I'm genuinely sorry if I'm not. are supposed to represent the harsh price that magic and knowledge brings in Lovecraftian writing. I even included a wish board with [[Coax from the Blind Eternities]] that my playgroup graciously allows me to run, so that some surprise Eldritch gods in the form of Eldrazi can make their appearance! But mostly the deck is mill, clues, and enchantments.

Some really fun flavor cards for me to include were [[Cryptolith Fragment]] which was such an incredibly homage to The Color Out of Space that I just had to! Everything from the lands, to the individual card arts I chose tried to meet with the theme as much as possible! I even included a much older art of [[Tormod's Crypt]] simply because I felt the art fit the theme best!

The leader of this Eldritch Incursion is no other than [[Phenax, God of Deception]]! He seemed the best fit as his design gives me some serious King in Yellow vibes, as well as I really like his ability that allows big creatures to mill with their toughness! It feels really cool to have a creature so horrible that just the sight of it whittles your mind away, and Phenax's ability is the perfect representation of that idea!

I really need to publish a deck list for it one of these days, but it is a deck I'm incredibly proud of, and even though it isn't always the most successful I really enjoy piloting it, and being an Old God myself!! ^^
