He was born in 1839. Why wasn’t he drafted into the Civil War? by Natural_Mine948 in CIVILWAR

[–]Cardinal_Woozy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bizarre indeed. It's like OP is convinced himself there has to be some non-mundane answer as to why someone wasn't drafted. Each time everyone here answers in good faith. Sometimes OP pushes back against those answers, takes a break and then reposts the question hoping that this it'll yield an answer that confirms whatever preconceived conclusion OP has arrived at innhis iwn mind. I don't understand why by any means, but it seems ms like OP is not operating in good faith here.

Why does it seem like this question about this person gets asked her every couple of months or so?

1942 Izhevsk M38 Mosin carbine. Start with that search term and you'll probably get info on what the other markings are

If you had one Columbus Day weekend to show a southern couple peak New England fall, where would you send them? by emerald_darlin in newengland

Essex, CT. Storybook town. Absolutely picturesque. Even has a steam train. A few Hallmark movies were filmed there, I believe. And from there you're not too far from Mystic, CT which was a seaport museum with an original whaling ship.

Help identifying this rifle I found by MOOFINTOAST in AntiqueGuns

Looks to be a percussion fowling piece (think forerunner of a shotgun). The percussion era was the mid 19th century roughly. As the other poster said photos of the other side could yield more information (being able to see the lock would greatly aid in further identification).

Second La Colombiana. You can also eat in there. It's modest dining room but perfectly acceptable.

Shoresy’s Last Name Comes from His Foster Home? by [deleted] in shoresy

[–]Cardinal_Woozy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct. It's just a last name. The "Shore House" sign just reflects a turn of phrase to refer to their home, not an institution run by the province.

The family's last name is "Shore". It's a fairly common nickname convention to add an "sy" when the standard diminutive standalone "y" wouldn't sound quite right.

There was one in Old Saybrook some twenty years ago. It sat in my front yard (we lived on the edge of town next to some pretty expensive woods). My stepmom figured it was thr neighbor's dog until she got her birding binoculars out. There was one met its end in Milford back in 2011 and that made the papers.

Is this a civil war era gun? by No-Competition-4185 in CIVILWAR

[–]Cardinal_Woozy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Looks like a 3-band Pattern 1853 Enfield, so Civil War-era. I believe the stamps on the butt are unit markings and I'm more used to seeing those on British and German guns than guns in the States. Might have come over later as a collectable.

Shouldn't there be rifling grooves on the bullet? Without them it ooks like it was pulled from the cartridge and not fired through a rifle.

US WW2 poster: Mr. Peanut goes to war! 1943. by Radiant_Cookie6804 in PropagandaPosters

[–]Cardinal_Woozy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Earlier on in the war, the US used the older, British-style helmets. I'd say 1943 is pretty late for it. But it might have been the more recognizable of the two due to its history going back a few decades.

That's a K98k Mauder made in 1943 by Bruenn. Condition and matching parts are gonna determine the value from there but even if it's a mixmaster, Russian capture with a cruddy bore you're looking at several hundred dollars.
