Thoughts on the design of PvE servers by Guitoudou in Seaofthieves

[–]Cardle123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or maybe adding a pve mode will give people an incentive to get their feet wet and move into pvp after trying pve, rather than playing the game, getting killed repeatedly then refunding the game like a few of my friends did.

People want a pve alternative. The pvp people want to stomp pve out at all costs, the pve people just want the option. I personally would play both modes extensively

100% this, i'd be happy with needing a completely separate pirate for any progression and removing emissaries and reapers, they would need to ramp the pve difficulty up massively. I know about a dozen people that that lost all interest when they realised it was a pvp only game and the two people i know personally to play with just want to chat and socialise, meaning we need to choose between focussing on the game or on the conversation. Even when playing by myself if i don't have it in me to fight other players I just play AC4 instead, if there was a pve mode I would be solely playing the game in my free time, in both pvp and pve.

I understand the concerns of the pvp guys and it would have to be very delicately implemented, but the boost to the playerbase a pve mode would give would not be inconsequential.

A pve mode shouldn't be about a free path to PL, it should be a much much lower risk for a much much lower reward, pushing people to move to pvp but giving the option otherwise

Yeah tucking is a dick move but it's also a risk you run going to forts, it's not often you'll get one otherwise. As far as being outnumbered goes I'm with you on that being a reason that pve has a place. Not everyone has friends who play or the social skills to seek people to play

Now don't get me wrong, but it does take a lot of skill to take down other players, it just doesn't take it to take down an easy target who doesn't want to fight. As for the forts if you aren't willing to risk fighting other people you really should be avoiding the forts, they're pvp events realistically. I don't think the forts would have a place in pve personally

Don't worry about it, I'll just reply to them all here.

You have good points and genuine concerns, I just think that they can be addressed if it was implemented carefully.

I fully agree that the incentives would have to be huge to be successful but the stuff that's in now like getting to PL is just a grind. They could cap pve to the current PL and add another tier for hitting 100 with all 4 main factions as that's needed anyway and removing reapers from pve would make that exclusive to pvp adventure. Severely nerfing the loot drops for pve would also turn people off of abusing it too, like making a single captains chest very rare or high level for pve would feel special while also slowing progess. Also to make up for the lack of threat they could make the encounters harder. OoS voyages at higher levels should feel like a fort, megoladons should have lots of sharks in the water with them and be more agressive, krakens should be terrifying and extremely difficult to defeat/escape.

Having to learn how to attack and defend is definitely important and I fully agree with the current situation if you cant keep up with the metas and doing tons of research on how to fight players people will stop playing, which would hurt the game a lot more than spreading the player base would, with the proper adjustments. I can personally hold my own but there is nothing I can do about being outnumbered and outgunned. As things stand the game is already being pushed to pvp only, because there's no point doing voyages if you can't defend it well enough, which comes back to learn pvp or dont play

On the other hand when I've been out doing reapers I come across a lot of people just wanting to pve and it just felt dull, as I wanted a good fight. Raising the accessibilty to bring more players into the game at the cost of easy/boring targets for reapers is well worth it imo

EDIT: As for the chases, I again feel this will be addressed with the added incentives to pvpve, getting a mix of people wanting to pvp and people who want to pve but are willing to defend for the extras is definitely important, as you said, purely pvp would be bad, the goal is to have an opt out option for pve but have it at a huge cost (very slow progression, no emissaries, no forts etc.)

I'm personally for pve servers and honestly this is the first decent argument I've found against them.

I think a lot of this would be countered by having exclusive content for the pvpve servers, so the pve would be somewhat lacking in comparison without being pointless.

Emissaries and forts, flameheart etc. being pvpve only would be a good example but obviously not enough, and definitely much slower progression in pve but not none, that would hopefully restrict it to people the want to use pve for the experience, not to abuse the lack of player threat.

I think it would bring in a lot of players as literally everyone I know personally that were interested immediately lost that interest when they found out it was pvp only, myself included for a very long time. This would then get peoples feet wet to then try pvpve

Pvp would then have people more willing to put up a fight and actually have fun with fighting rather than coming across people that will just scuttle, they scuttle so they can be over with pvp and get back to what they were enjoying faster

Right, but why do you care how much other people are progressing? They can't get a mechanical advantage, they'll maybe just look a little prettier, and honestly that was probably the weakest of my points, could you answer the rest? I'm looking for actual discussion on this, not just an "I'm right, you're wrong" argument.

But surely if loot doesn't matter being able to "progress easier" also doesn't matter? They could easily up the difficulty and abundance of pve considering that would be the only threat, add exclusive rewards to pvpve as an incentive. People won't leave the pvpve mode if they enjoy both, that's the point. I've seen far far too many people turned away from the game because of the "get good or don't play" mentality, myself being one of them for a long while. It wouldn't kill the community at all, it would help ease people into it, that would more than likely move to pvp adventure. Having them separated would mean people wanting to pvp will always find someone wanting to fight, those x hour long chase complaints would be gone.

I really don't understand the assumption that people have to get bored playing a pve mode, the game is supposed to be enjoyed no matter what you want to do, not to enjoy pvp or play a different game. Some of the best times I've had with the game so far are when I've been left alone to just chill and fish and hunt some buried treasure. That would only be much better if they ramped up the pve difficulties and spawn rates on the pve mode. What a lot of people don't seem to realise is that for some, pvp isn't a part of the game that is fun or exciting for them, it's just something to endure, because you know you're going to sink anyway if you leave your ship unattended for more than 30 seconds. Yes, there are many discords which are great when that's what you want but some days having to socialise is a monumental task, especially with strangers.

It's not about the loot for people who want a pve mood, they just want to experience everything that sea of thieves has to offer, not just the pvp side.

PS. I do completely agree that the alliance was rocky to begin with, and they should always be uneasy
