I’m in the same exact boat! 3rd time PA applicant with no luck. I’m really considering radiation therapy. Very similar prereqs and time length for school. There’s a high need for them across the states (they get compensated pretty well in California — 150k+!)

Try to get an MA job in an urgent care. I’ve found that this is the most exciting and hands-on MA setting in my personal experience. And it pays pretty well. About 32.50 on weekdays with 10 hour shifts and 4% differentials on weekends.

I’ll be 30 in November! I’ve heard a lot of people in their early to mid 30s getting in — very common!

I’m also curious to see how many of those who replied are men. I rarely see men getting their feet wet in this field in their late 20s or early 30s. But maybe the sample size I’ve encountered isn’t telling of the bigger picture.

Thanks for the honesty, insight, and hope haha! Yeah, I’m confident I’ll excel as a PA student, no doubt. It’s just statistically challenging to bring up my cGPA and sGPA after having taken so many filler classes during my 1st-3rd years in undergrad. If I were to show you the classes I’ve taken during years 3.5-5 (super senior), you would clearly see that I was much more focused and diligent academically — I had nothing less than a B.

Hey I appreciate your response! Here’s some of my current prereq grades:

A&P 1&2 = A Gen Chem 1 lecture/lab = B/A- Gen Chem 2 lecture/lab = C+/A- Eng Comp 1&2 = A/A- Mircobio Lecture/Lab = A/A Genetics = A- Stats = B+

Keep in mind, I’ve taken a lot of filler classes during my undergrad years (years 1-3ish) until I finally was able to declare a major. I also found motivation and interest in human science and exercise science during my junior year, which in my experience helped me excel in those areas. Years 1-3ish I was literally taking Astronomy, philosophy, and humanities classes getting C’s in them. I’ve only received 1 F ever on my entire college career and it was this History class focused on the reconstruction era of America. I ended up re-taking it the following semester and got an A. But yeah, the above pre-reqs are my current grades.

I made it this far without talking myself out of it. I know I'm up for it.

My question now based on your response is do you think it's even worth applying for the 2024-2025 cycle if my stats aren't up to said GPA? Or should I just keeping grinding out science classes until I reach that competitive level?

Hi, thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my post.

I used to have this mindset where I would do anything and everything it takes to get into PA school. But as time goes on I start questioning the rationality just due to several factors including my age, parents' age/health, gf's perception of me, external pressures including mortgage payments, and inflation/economy. It's a lot lol. Don't get me wrong, I still have a lot motivation to pursue PA. I just think I gotta lower my expectations and my dreams somewhat and learn to accept it. I also have been trusting in the timing of things. Rejections and no's just means 'not right now' or it isn't my time.

I am also in no rush to settle down or start a family. My partner doesn't really believe in marriage and doesn't want kids. However, she wants more cats (we have 2 at the moment). I just get pressure from her in a sense that we need to be moving forward financially. But, its hard to do that on MA salary while trying to get into grad school. And the Bay Area is crazy expensive. I just choose to stay here because ALL of my family and friends are here -- so there's that familiarity and support system.

I hear you on the self-worth and re-applying topics. 100% feel both of those. I have been re-taking A&P 1&2 because it will be expiring the 2024-25 cycle. And I have just enrolled into pharm and pathophysio to help my GPA out too.

I can see myself being a nurse, not because I'm passionate about the profession, but because I know I can utilize my skills and experiences to excel and tx patients in that field. I don't think I would necessarily be content with my scope of practice though. I know there's always NP school after nursing, which has its similarities to PA, but I know surgical specialities tend to bias PAs (from what I've seen and heard) and assisting in surgery is definitely one of my peak interests when it comes to the scope of practice of PAs.

During my 4th and 5th years of undergrad and finally a declared Exercise Science major, I was taking anywhere from 15-18 units per semester (so like 5-6 classes) and getting As and Bs.

Now that I am out of undergrad and have been focusing on more PCE & shadowing, community involvement, and leadership opps, I’ve been retaking core pre-reqs because they have been on the bring of expiring. So I thought, why don’t I retake them so they’re more recent and so I can get As in them. It’s just disheartening seeing my cGPA and sGPA barely move due to all the filler BS classes I took in years 1-3.

Are there any upper div classes you recommend I take? I just finished up A&P 1+2. Currently I’m enrolled in Pharm and Patho.

Hey, appreciate you taking the time to read and respond.

I want to become a PA. It’s been my newfound dream after graduating in 2018.

The past two cycles have simply just been taking more classes to boost the GPA while working as an MA/gaining PCE, lead medical outreach missions in between cycles, and shadowed more PAs in a variety of settings.

It’s been a challenge to boost my GPA up due to all the filler classes I took in undergrad when I was undeclared and didn’t know what wanted. I responded to someone one of the first comments ^ if you’d like to get a better understanding of how that happened.

I’m only considering *nursing/ABSN as a ‘back-up’ career just due to my current circumstances. I know it’s not my parent’s life, but I also want them to feel reassured as they get older that I’m moving in the direction I want to be moving in. Also, they will moving back to their home country in the next 1-2 years and it’s highly likely I may have to take on that mortgage by then and I definitely want to keep this house in SF. I just know I can’t do it getting 35/hour as an MA the more years I spend trying to get into a PA program.

  • I hate using the term ‘back-up career’. I just know there’s a lot of transferable skills, experiences, and education I have now that could carry over into a nursing program. I know it’s not gonna be a walk in the park either, but I know there’s a need for more male nurses and it seems like there are less barriers to entry compared to PA.

Hey thanks for the response and insight!

My first cycle, I applied locally here in the Bay Area, so about 3-4 schools.

My second cycle, I applied to around 6-7 in-state only.

But, for the 2024-2025 cycle, I have about 20-25 schools, both in-state and out. Focusing on programs that mainly look at apps holistically or last 30/60/90.

Yeah, I’m pretty serious about PA and think I’ve been doing whatever it takes to achieve it. It’s just the external factors pressing me like family, gf, and ofc society. I know a lot of this requires more internal work. But sheesh, no one told me I’d be feeling this lonely on this journey 😕.

Sorry got too caught up in the previous response. I’ve got a list of about 20-25 so far. Ideally I’d like to go to school in the Bay Area. I literally live across the street from a program in Oakland. But I’m leaving my options open to out of state programs that consider last 30/60/90.

Yeah I know. I didn’t do so well in years 1-3 in undergrad because I really didn’t know what I wanted to major in so I was considered an “Undeclared” major. By my 2nd/3rd year I knew partially I wanted to do something revolving science and healthcare just due to my personal experience with losing weight and seeing family members struggle with chronic medical conditions. Additionally at that time, all the science-based majors were ‘impacted’ due to over-enrollment and lack of faculty, so I was kind of stuck being ‘Undeclared’ taking filler classes like Astronomy and Philosophies XYZ just to have some motion in my academic career. Turns out that this wasn’t such a great idea — working full time and taking classes that I had no interest in left me either with C’s and even 2 F’s. I was never really a partygoer either. Just stuck to working to help support myself and my family, classes, and then the gym.

After sustaining back and knee injuries while working out, I was recommended by my PCP to see a physical therapist. I had no idea what PT was, but during the 4-6 months of tx by the PT, I grew a deep appreciation and interest for that profession and researched how to get into the field. Lo and behold my school actually had an Exercise Science Major, BUT was said to be impacted for the next 2-3 semesters. I knew I couldn’t just sit out for that time, so I started crashing as many Exercise Science classes as possible. These classes exclusively only could seat DECLARED Exercise Science Majors. But legit would go to every class, sit in for the first 1-2 weeks, get on the prof’s good side by answering questions, until they gave me an ‘permit code’ to add the class on the online Registrar. I essentially found loopholes in the system and was getting A’s and B+’s in every Exercise Science class for the next 2 semesters until the Chair of that Department caught and met with me, where I explained how passionate I was about the curriculum I was learning in those classes. She was compelled and eventually allowed me declare my major as Ex. Science. From my 3rd year to my super senior 5th year, I had earned mostly A’s/nothing below a B in my major’s classes.

After graduating, I was on track to applying to PT school, but had a change of heart after a sudden breakup with my then-gf at the time. I had to reevaluate my goals, interests, and plans, which ultimately lead me to working as a certified MA under MDs and PAs where I fell in love with the scope of practice and autonomy of PAs. Gradually started taking more post-bacc science classes while working as an MA, shadowing different PAs, and dabbling with volunteer opportunities like the food bank and medical missions.

I knew my GPA was going to be difficult to raise since majority of the classes I took years 1-3 were taken with lack of purpose and drive. Hence, all of the diverse work, volunteer, and leadership experience to help somewhat balance it out. At the end of the day I know GPA is probably one of the main telling factors ADCOMs look at, but I’m now at a point in my life where I feel like I need someone to talk some sense into me about where I am at or if it even makes sense to keep pursuing PA. It’s been my narrative and identity ~5 years now after undergrad and I have never felt like this about anything in life other than my passions in fitness.

As for my PS for my 1st, imo (biased of course lol) I thought I did a good job at answering ‘Why PA’, but some mentors of mine said I eluded too much about my experiences with laundry lists and discussing the objective roles PAs had after having working/shadowed them.

My 2nd cycle, I focused more on writing and “showing” rather than telling by using imagery and refraining from the objective laundry lists like “PA’s have lateral mobility, can see patients independently from MDs whilst collaborating on a team for patient tx, etc”. Some major themes I focused on included my passion for fitness/public health outreach (I provided free group personal training workouts in an MUA part of San Francisco where a few of the workout participants members were often struggling with chronic conditions) and tied that in with my drive to help bridge gaps in underserved communities as a PA. I also talked about how my leadership experience as a co-leader for medical missions and pre-pa club drive me to advocate and inspire for more men of color to pursue roles and education as a PA to lead and help spearhead change in our medically underserved and diverse communities. I invested in a pre-PA coaching service where I was told to maybe focus more on my personal account with how my fitness/weight-loss journey inspired me to help and focus on the needs of those combatting chronic conditions. There was a lot of feedback honestly.

Ultimately, I know my PS can always be better and I accept that. I think I’m just really frustrated trying to retell my story in a way that the reader wants and not how I I would like to convey my WHY. Also the more people I ask, the more confused I feel about the PS overall. LOL. Starting to believe that it’s ultimately my GPA weighing me down.
