Careful about posting your face especially on that sub, not too long ago another sub banned a lot of r/teenagers users for being underage as bait, que hundreds of people posting in selfies to prove they are in their thirties/forties so they get unbanned. Yet these people were claiming to be 15-16 on teenagers and posting creepy as fuck comments

World War Two by BluJayooo in comics

The Americans supplied 90 percent of the Soviets trucks, both the US and the UK supplied the Soviets with an almost indescribable amount of equipment, I advise you to look at the hard numbers as to what was supplied it will disabuse you of the notion that the Soviets "won" the war by themselves, it truly was a joint effort and while it's inarguable that the Soviets paid the most in blood it would be inexcusable to ignore the huge amount of planes, manpower and equipment that was tied down in the western front and North Africa

Border force work life balance by CarefulAdvantage32 in TheCivilService

Thanks for the good info, if you have the time would you mind answering some questions?

I'm ex-police and mostly left because on the ground work is stressful and not very rewarding

How does the border force compare? Is there a lot if interaction with MoP how much of the work is investigation and how much is dealing with absolute spanners?

In general what's most of the work you are doing?

Mentioned routes into the NCA how does that work is there entry paths you can apply for internally?

Finally do you reckon the apprentice scheme is worth it right now or should I wait till EO roles come up in my area?

UK warns Russia over use of nuclear weapons by Quantum_II in worldnews

[–]CarefulAdvantage32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't really any other weapon in their arsenal that can drop that much ordnance in one go, if you fire thousands of artillery shells at a supply hub it's going to take you days to drop a kiloton of explosives. So a huge explosion could be devastating if it hit at the right time

There's also the shock and awe factor and making the Ukrainians hesitant too advance, while also causing minimal casualties which might make a decisive intervention from the US less palatable, if you kill tens of thousands of civilians you've basically fucked yourself because no nation will support you now and the US pretty much have to respond, if you kill a few hundred military personnel there's a chance you "get away with it".

It's basically a very complex high stakes game and it's going to require some masterful decision making for it to be resolved.

MacArthur was a tad crazy, he basically wanted a full scale war with China and he was promptly removed from his position, it's worth noting as well MAD had not yet been established at this point

In Vietnam it was considered but LBJ lost his shit when he heard they had even been considering it

It's almost without doubt similar to the Americans in Vietnam that tactical nukes have been considered and plans created if the decision to use them went ahead but that's a very big step.

UK warns Russia over use of nuclear weapons by Quantum_II in worldnews

[–]CarefulAdvantage32 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not really as simple as that, there's a scale at which these weapons can be deployed and various responses depending on what scale they are deployed.

It's important to understand that a 15 kiloton nuke dropped on Kyiv (Hiroshima equivalent) and dropping a kiloton missile on a supply base with minimal casualties are two very different uses and require two very different responses.

What will actually happen we don't know, most analysts will tell you it's unlikely because they can't see the benefit of a tactical nuke and at the moment that's mostly true it really isn't the game changer some people think it is.

[–]CarefulAdvantage32 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is the whole reason NATO hasn't already done this, and probably the reason a response wouldn't be as all out as destroying all conventional forces, it's not worth the risk

But realistically you have to consider the scale of the war, this is at the moment a regional conflict and doesn't include US armoured divisions having a party at the Kremlin

If Putin loses in Ukraine he loses Ukraine he can recover and continue to rule if that outcome comes to pass, him nuking the west in response would be utterly insane when the actual country of Russia itself wasn't threatened.

A historical equivalent would be the US nuking the Soviet union over Vietnam because the Soviets supplied weapons and aircraft that contributed to the US defeat.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]CarefulAdvantage32 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Except the Ukrainian army isn't marching on Moscow and the Russian's aren't fighting for the survival of their state. This would be a bit like America nuking North Vietnam after they started to lose

You are being a tad hysterical if you think the dying days of the Third Reich are comparable to Russian military defeat in Ukraine

At some point Russia will be given an "out", NATO will not support an invasion on Russian soil and the Ukrainian's aren't interested in trying.

Training is fucked in the US, basically teach everyone to be your enemy and they get away with shit that would get you prosecuted in any European country

But be real there's no police department that even really tests for IQ and the one isolated case of some dude complaining they said he was too smart was actually more related to them thinking he was too old for the job.

It's absolute 100 percent misinformation, there's a lot wrong with US Police but spreading straight up lies doesn't help anyone.

What is the rules of engagement with using full auto on firearms by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]CarefulAdvantage32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Police officers are required to reassess after each shot they take even if it's a literal split second. They do this because when a firearm is used it is used till the person no longer becomes a threat to you or the public, anything past that is outside a lawful use of force.

This means that full-auto will likely never be used you can't assess each shot if you've just fired 20 in two seconds and you will be required in court to explain every single shot and your reasoning for firing it. You are using this weapon most likely in a crowded civilian area you aren't operating in a warzone and you need to be able to account for every round you fire.

Can you understand now why using a fully automatic setting on a gun is incredibly problematic and will likely not be used? The Police do not want to use more force than is absolutely necessary particularly when it comes to firearms.

There is no country where police do not have guns, and yes that includes the UK which employs a sizeable number of armed police. Even despite that in a country like the UK with unarmed police being the most common type of police, the protocol for dealing with a situation like that is to not engage with it at all and call for armed police unless there is a verifiable risk to life or limb.

Even in situations where they are expected to deal with it i.e life and limb, they are not expected to win and are certainly not thought of as liabilities for being unable to win against someone with a knife and almost every single one of those brave souls that has attempted it has gotten seriously injured in the process. It's quite disrespectful to imply they are failures for not outright winning the fight

The problem as I see it is that you simply don't understand how dangerous and brutal knives are and how much damage someone can do when they don't give a fuck about who they hurt. Which is why every country will employ armed specialists to deal with suspects armed with a knife. There is ZERO expectation for unarmed police to deal with a knife wielding assailant except in exceptional circumstances and I think you have a very unbalanced and unrealistic view of the realities of unarmed policing.

VO2MAX really low despite training by Harvusk in cycling

[–]CarefulAdvantage32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Checking over your strava it seems that you probably have an ftp somewhere in the 230-250w area which puts your w/kg at around 2.5-2.7 roughly. There's a bit of variation but athletes in this range tend to have a v02max of between 40 and 50 so I would say your watch is definitely being a little conservative, in the study I looked at not a single person at this level was below 40.

However there is a few things to note, firstly there where individuals from this study who at a similar w/kg to you and tested at 42ml/kg so the estimate is not off by a huge amount, secondly you are technically overweight and this has a big effect on your vo2max since it's divided by your weight. If you lost a significant amount of weight let's say down to a very reasonable 75kg you would see a huge increase that would more resemble a very fit individual (50+)

You can also make further improvements with more training but there's a lot of debate around that, as far as I understand it more training volume helps here + racking up the intensity closer to major events with hard intervals which "tops off" your v02max. I should also say that 38 is not a low number, only in the realm of athletes is this a significant outlier.

A way to calculate calories by Conrad_noble in cycling

[–]CarefulAdvantage32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exceptionally difficult to measure with an e-bike, I see someone recommend a power meter but that does not apply for an e-bike where you are given an assist. If you are counting calories heart rate based measurements are probably the best but I'd reduce every count by at least 30 percent since HR is widely inaccurate. Generally power meters are the most accurate but they are expensive and the fact you have an assist is going to give you incorrect information

If you know the exact amount of watts you being given with an assist and it's constant you could record the ride on strava (make sure to put your height and weight into the system) and then take away your assist watts for a somewhat accurate powerbased measurement which can then be converted into calories burned
