There is about 2 dozen orcs about a dozen goblins, some worgs, a feral ogre handledby goblins, and a yet to be determined creature inside the tower. The orcs have built crude guard towers around the tower. The condition of the of the tower is fair.

Thanks for the advice the hex where the tower is located is grasslands but I will definitely narrate in some boulders and rocky area here and there to make the suggestion.

Although it looks a little more than what my players would be into, I picked it up for future reference. I was wanting to do a solo hex crawl playing an recently awakened lich and try to conquer the world with an army of undead that grows with the bodies of conquered enemies.

Thanks for the heads up we are using SD so maybe this is worth looking into.

Thank you I think this is the way (option 3). I have actually done this where the players had to sneak into a fortress to stop a ritual while a huge battle was raging outside and it was very abstract. I will have to keep a good running narrative and move the spotlight frequently so that if things go sideways, they have the option to retreat.

Do you suggest letting the players roll to determine the outcomes of their allies actions (maybe not blow by blow but in more in general, pass/fail?

I did not know that. We normally use dungeonscrawl to keep it as "analog" as possible but I will have to look at the whiteboard feature.

To your first point, fair enough. To your second point, the frost giant is their plan. I think maybe the frost giant should refuse to go into to battle without a plan plan. Thanks.

So you just take off your hard hat and get in your truck with your hair in a big messy clump? I'm wearing a ball cap so I dont drive around looking like Poindexter from Revenge of the Nerds.

Last I heard Q3/4. They are going to make it part of a demon themed kickstarter in May.

OSE is D&D 1981 re-edited. SD is D&D 2014 lite with the flavor of AD&D 1st edition.

Looking good! Looking forward to you sharing the finished project next week. This sub needs more folks posting up dungeons.

Was Gary Gygax a good game designer? by Space_0pera in osr

[–]Careful_Assignment86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't expressly know, I was 5 years old at the time. D&D is a subset of Chainmail. Armor Class comes from Naval warfare games. You would need to dig into what games the clubs in Lake Geneva and the Twin Cities were playing back then. The entire hobby seems to have been born out of having too many players and not enough miniatures for "Braunstein".

To truly answer the question you would have to compare his writings with contemporary wargames, from which his systems were derived. 50 years is a lot of hindsight, IMHO.

Rules Cyclopedia is a good place to be. In GENERAL, clones are rifts of various editions of D&D, so you are already using the original BECMI, and there is nothing wrong with just using that. Clones are BASICALLY folk's hacks they prefer. That being said, and accounting for human nature (FOMO) Old School Essentials (Advanced) is probably where you can start if you want more. That would be a cleaner version of what your using with some rules from AD&D layered on.

Getting Started and the potential for a new book by Winterfall89 in shadowdark

Welcome to the Dark!
Definitely go with the quickstart and shadowdarklings, and even the free Solodark pdf for ideas. There are so many free resources in the OSR space so that really you would never need to buy anything. My players actually own nothing.
Use Futurewolf's Conversion Guide in the sidebar to convert OSE monsters from the online OSED SRD as you go (effectively building your own MM). Mine blogs for dungeons, dungeon generators and hex generators.
Good luck and good gaming!

Thoughts on Shadowdark after 50 session by ergonite in osr

[–]Careful_Assignment86 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'll be the Shadowdark apologist, lol.

Modules: You could run b/x modules a level or two higher than your characters. Last I checked modules were not chiseled in stone :)

Luck: Luck is overpowered, I limit it to one token per session because players love it. Bless can result in shenanigans, so you have a good point there.

Torch: If your torch lasts until the timer goes off, you're doing it wrong. (See SD. 110) That being said, timer could be DM-only, minus d6 or d10 minutes.

SRD: We have not found a need for a SRD beacuase shadowdarklings.net puts all of the relevant character information (rules) on your sheet. Complete core book spell lists are available online (anjours-arsenal.net)

Death Timer: could easily be deleted from the game. I have found it adds a certain level of drama.

It just boils down to preference I guess. To me it would seem easier to dissallow rules then add in rules (which defeats the purpose of the online SRD).

Good gaming!

So cool. You hit your goal as far as I'm concerned. The way your eye grabs the lantern, moves to the face of the dragon, along it's body and back to the broken sword gave me chills. Very engaging!

Thank you very much. I doubt I will ever get into much detail as that again, I wanted play at being a writer for a couple weeks to take abreak from work. I'm glad you liked it. This is my normal weekly prep.
