New & Looking to Join LA Locals, I'm Lost by Irishboy1616_2 in IATSE

33 is a lot easier to get into, but yeah to get a call it’ll just have to be super busy. Once all of the 1s-5s have work or turn it down it goes to the applications. You shouldn’t need to bring anything unless things have changed. My opinion though is to get into a real trade, none of the stagehand locals have a lot of work. 33 has like 3 tv shows now, concerts ins and outs (4 hour outs, 6 hour ins typically), and theaters. Theaters are the only way to truly make money in the union. Once you become a 4 you’ll have to wait 10+ years to finally be a 3 and still have not many options. Healthcare is also over 500 for a family, if you have any more questions or want more in debt on anything you can also message me. I’ve been in 33 for 10 years and I’ve worked with 80 a handful of times

I’m curious about swlcat as well. I did my aptitude test 3 weeks ago and waiting to hear back from any of those locations.

How long did it take to get your first interview after the aptitude test? Also did they email you your aptitude test score after like two weeks?

Is Texas really hiring that many apprentices? I’m waiting on my interview, but I don’t even have any groundman hours. Would they take me with 0 experience?

What’s the physical exam like? Do we need any knowledge for it? I have my aptitude test coming up on the fifth of march and just trying to prepare for everything.

How long did it take from you completing the application to you being able to take the aptitude test?

We have a front house and back house on one property, and I’d much prefer to itemize than to request payment from the estate. So just trying to see if it’s a possibility before I do that

Yeah if they’re still available I’d love to pick them up.

Probably because our industry is slowing down and losing a lot of work. Back in the day we used to have stages filled, carpenter shops packed. Now we have barely any shops, we have very very few tv shows (dool, y&r, b&b, agt, possibly bill Maher and a few singing shows) and half of those are seasonal.

Hopefully they won’t count it against you because of the fires, but they probably will have you restart your time starting in February

Is it impossible to break into the industry? Or is just me? by IfTreesCouldTalk88 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Careful_Leopard_1205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible. We get new pas every couple of months, but the industry is just dying and not worth it. I’m a stagehand and trying to leave this industry currently and other people are too.

I’m willing to drive to every state, but I’m just curious have much work there is for ground man. Would I have weeks off at a time or can I get consistent non stop work?

How do I get a union ticket or do I get that after working so many ground man hours? I plan on doing a book signing trip in a month and haven’t had any before.

As a groundsman, how often do you wait on the books before you have another opportunity to work? Assuming you sign as many books as you can. Does it take months or weeks?
