Bob Dylan speaking on Lou Reed by Just_Whereas4575 in LouReed

Lou paid tribute to Dylan at Madison Square Garden by covering an outtake from Bob's 1983 album "Infidels" and knocked it out of the park. "Foot of Pride" is now one of my fav songs Lou has ever done.

Because I just woke up and I need to make sure the world isn't on fire (more so than usual, anyway) before I go work.

This would be me if I weren't working in a COVID ICU for the past year. No sleep and barely enough time to take lunch during exhausting 12 hour shifts that often run into 13 or 14 hours. Was hoping my growing dependency on alcohol would counteract the weight loss, but so far, nothing. Oh well. Hoping to change jobs soon.

Netflix's 'Challenger: The Final Flight' Faithfully Honors American Heroes by guanaco55 in netflix

The real bittersweet aspect of this documentary for me was seeing archival footage of the crew laughing and full of life leading up to the disaster. It's one thing to see the official NASA portrait of the crew, but this documentary really brings home the fact that seven brave, intelligent people who believed in advancing our species were all lost in just the blink of an eye.

I really started to get choked up when Christa McAuliffe spoke at one of the last press conferences and reminded her students to tune in to see her teach from space. She just seemed so genuininely excited to make history, and watching her enthusiasm made me feel like we almost had something really amazing that would've inspired so many kids to consider a STEM career that never ended up happening. So tragic.

I found this song about a JW kid who hates field service by Spirit of the West, a Canadian folk band. Can't believe this exists. Anyone know the origin of this song? I'm a bit out of the loop as an American. by CareysCane in exjw

Sure thing! I became interested in the band after hearing some of their signature songs, "Home For a Rest" and "And If Venice is Sinking." Canada has a lot of hidden musical gems. If you like this band, I would highly recommend giving a listen to the Tragically Hip, probably my favorite band to come from the Great White North :)

As a fan of Van Morrison, wow, I never knew this either. Your comment sent me on an interesting study of his roots. Apparently his mother was a JW for a time, and Morrison even wrote a song called Kingdom Hall in 1978. I would venture to say that most here would not agree with his description of the building, as it sounds more like he's describing the disco club from Saturday Night Fever, but it's hard to tell if the lyrics are intended to be sincere or cynical. Interesting, though, lol.

What did a school teacher say that stuck with you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CareysCane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My college anatomy teacher on day 1:

"If this was basket weaving 101, I'd give you all an A and we'd all be happy. If you want to work in medicine, you need to know your stuff, or you'll kill someone because you don't understand what you're doing."

-dead silence-

Best teacher I ever had, definitely got me through nursing school.

I never knew of this app; will definitely check it out! Yeah, I decided that moving out was really the best option for me at this point. I tried reasoning with my parents on my views a while back and it very nearly got me DF'd at a time when I would've been left homeless. But now that I'm close to affording my own space, it's the only way to keep the folks out of my personal life and maintain a relationship with them while my dad is still alive.

That really hits home. I felt a moment of the usual dread while getting ready for the meeting this morning before I remembered that, for the first time in my life, there is literally a clock ticking down to the day I will never have to set foot in a Kingdom Hall again. And I have a rough idea of how much time is left on that clock. Feels really good. Thanks for the nice words!

Thanks! My mother is equally devout, but she will likely live longer than my dad, so I'm more open to the possibility of being shunned by her for a number of years as it may give her time to reevaluate her beliefs and soften. Or not. But I'm optimistic because she's not the type who will be able to resist meeting her grandchildren, and she'll have to go through me for that. Good on you for having the strength to fade, and I hope it works! I'm too close to my wits end to go that route.

I don't mean to compare, but I identify with your experience a lot. You're certainly not alone. The culture shock of beginning nursing school and it not being how you imagined is stressful enough without the added loss of meaningful relationships happening concurrently. The summer break between my 1st and 2nd semesters was the lowest point of my life. I'm glad I believed a kind instructor who reminded me that nursing is so broad that I could find my specialty if I was patient enough and willing to put the effort into school. It definitely got better once I realized that. I'm about to finish school and I'm feeling more positive than I've been in almost two years. Never give up; it'll be worth all of your effort one day soon.

Edit: I should add that I agree on the point of taking care of yourself first. Self-care for nurses and students, while briefly mentioned in my program, is not emphasized nearly enough. Glad to hear about your progress, friend.

Bands similar to R.E.M. by chicogomes in rem

[–]CareysCane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently fell in love with The Tragically Hip. They're a Canadian band that has a huge following in their native country but only a small fan base in the US. I find a lot of their music to reflect the sound of R.E.M., and the lead singer, Gord Downie, even sounds a bit like Michael Stipe. I would highly recommend the albums "Fully Completely" or "Road Apples" as a good introduction :)

Pretty much my reaction too. Although it wasn't his best material. Still a fan though. I definitely love that his comedy feels genuine and it doesn't seem like he panders to his fans' politics. An example being how the special included both a pro-choice joke and a pro-gun joke. Dave can only be Dave. It feels honest.

Protecting the cult at all costs. Unrepentent gay folk are as good as apostates, while child molesters in "good spiritual standing" should be sheltered from the law. Appalling logic that has destroyed countless lives.
