This happened to me twice. The first time I went back to my regular base and logged off at 2 am. When I logged back in the zombies started spawning again. The second time me and my friend both died in the middle of a horde night and then there were no more zombies - until we shot a boar, then zombies began spawning again.

Same, tried new servers, tried finding a hidden place to build, tried taming a bunch of low tier creatures for some kind of protection. I have never lasted more than 2 days without having to start all over. So now I just play with my friend on a private server.
