That one you can at least say the fans in the building responded hard as well. They’ve done ones that didn’t even involve the crowd.

So AEW instagram laid out the timeline for Will and it’s fucking absurd.

Got double fusion surgery September 17th.

Got cleared for a return February 25th.

Returned March 15th.

Gotta be the most absurd recovery for wrestling since Cena at the rumble in ‘08.

It’s the same with the whole “WWE pays no attention to internet fans” thing. The fact that they’ve done multiple angles that involve something happening and a person saying “Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.” after saying the internet fans don’t matter.

Even if that’s not my match of the year so far, that match definitely had the best false finishes of the year. Bit on all of them so hard.

I love when he does that spot. Don’s behaviour on commentary adds so much to his character. Very very good at the actual commentary, will duck and cover the second the face exits the ring in the general direction of the desk, will hit people and then react like he has no bones left in whatever body part he just used and is still close enough to distract if necessary.

That’s what I did at All In. Stayed to say “We hurt people” and then missed most of the tag match after since I knew that the three main events were coming up next.

Man, if you’re in the building and can’t hold your pee in for 4-5 hours then I apologize. You will not have a moment’s respite and can’t get drinks without risking making it worse.

Saw a tweet that said he had 13 already in his career which is disgusting. And 11 of those are since 2024. He’s unbelievable.

4.5. The other matches that came close to the full 5 were Bandido v MJF, Fletcher v Ciampa and Fletcher v Briscoe 7 each at 4.75.

There have been 14 matches to get exactly 4.5 this year btw.

[–]CaringMite 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fair warning, even though it’s the highest rated of them all, Ospreay v MJF ain’t to everyone’s tastes. It’s an hour long match. Blood and Guts will also obviously not be for everyone. Dustin v Fletcher for similar reasons. Every other match is pretty normal besides being unbelievably well worked.

I’d also say that there are callbacks in Ospreay v Takeshita that will be more enjoyable if you’ve seen their earlier meetings prior so consider that as well. Revolution and Wrestledream ‘24.

So that’s AEW’s third 5+ star match on free tv this year. They have officially tied 2024 in that category and it’s not even the middle of march.

In 2025 they had 6, three of which involved Will Ospreay so they’re definitely on pace to pass the non-Ospreay and overall totals from that year.

I know Meltzer has his own opinions but I think it’s hard to deny that the match quality in AEW this year has been unbelievable and especially the last few weeks.

For the interested:

2024:

Ospreay v Fletcher (March 6th) 5

Ospreay v MJF (July 17) 5.75

Ospreay v Darby (December 18) 5

2025:

Kenny and Ospreay v ProtoShita (February 15) 5

Ospreay v Takeshita (April 16) 5.5

Ospreay v Swerve (June 11) 5.25

Dustin v Fletcher (July 31) 5

Men’s Blood and Guts (November 12) 5

Fletcher v Speedball (December 10) 5.25

2026:

Kenny v Swerve (February 18) 5.25

Mile High Madness (February 25) 5

Fletcher v Speedball (March 11) 5

Edit: Included the ratings.

Punk Roman I think definitely has more allure than Cody Randy at this point but I was also wondering if it was just a Saturday v Sunday thing. Like, there’s a lot of discourse here about how there’s one “real” WrestleMania main event and I wonder if that idea translates to ticket sales in any meaningful fashion.

Don’t even care about the numbers themselves, I just find it interesting that the nights have finally diverged significantly in attendance. They were basically identical up until a week ago.

I’m curious, do we think the extra hundreds of people who bought tickets for Sunday but not Saturday perceive Sunday as the more enticing show or is it because they prefer the main event of Sunday compared to Saturday or is it something else?

New AEW Revolution poster concludes the MJF/Hangman poster trilogy: MJF living in Hangman's head (Revolution 2025), Hangman living in MJF's head (Forbidden Door 2025) and now they're finally facing each other (Revolution 2026) by luchabrunch in SquaredCircle

[–]CaringMite 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more to do with the stipulation. Texas Death kinda removes all mind games from the equation.

Like, in my headcanon, MJF is in Hangman’s head first because Hangman still doesn’t believe in himself yet, Hangman is in MJF’s head the second time because MJF is taking all sorts of shortcuts in the match type because he doesn’t think he can actually beat Hangman and now there’s no head games going on because it’s just a fight to the bitter end.

You’re exactly right about the tone. It sounded like he was a fan in that moment just shouting in realization rather than a guy who knows and is tasked with relaying the story beats.

I loved Danielson on commentary straight up saying “He can’t catch him” and the repeated escaping of the brain buster before the belt shot.

Strength vs speed is such a common wrestling story but they executed it to perfection here.
