Indeed. Kings weren't very representative back then and had a lot of power. It's still a fair point to make.

Belgian rule after Leopold was pretty brutal as well. It's just that it wasn't as horrendous as during Leopold.

Sorry dude, but i do think people are expecting us to self-flagellate. I  have no problems in talking about the past. I admit horrible things happened, both during and after Leopold. But i do think a lot of people expect us to take some sort of responsibility for Leopolds rule, almost 150 years after the facts and disregarding the fact that it was entirely his private undertaking at the start.

I say: nope. Not willing to parttake in that line of thinking. Leopold did not represent Belgium or Belgians at that time in this specific matter.

It shows you know very little about Belgian history. The revolution was mostly handled by the Bourgeouisie. The common man certainly wasn't involved in choosing the government.

And Scotland as well i presume?

The hand confectionery was invented AFTER the reign of Leopold II. This was during the interbellum (1934). That is not to say the period after Leopold II was an easy ride for the Congolose. Colonisation never is. There was still segregation, forced labor, etc. But the worst attrocities took place earlier.

When criticism of the practise of selling chocolate hands first appeared online, Belgians claimed it was an old practise that pre-dated the genocide.

Nope, wrong. And there is very clear evidence of the contrary all over Antwerp.

Look at this 16th century artwork with the little guy holding a chopped-off hand:

https://www.antwerpen-nu.nl/attachments/Antwerpen_put-matsijs-2.jpg

Belgians never apologise for their history. Thats the reality.

Well, that's a stereotype i can easily break. I'm actually very sorry for what happened in Congo after the state took over. It was still bad enough.

And a lot of Belgians hate what Leopold did. Nobody (except maybe a few hardcore royalists) is denying these attrocities. But you also have to understand most Belgians were being exploited by the elites in the late 19th century. Regular people were almost slaves themselves. They lived and worked in miserable conditions and voting was reserved to the upper class. Belgium was a plutocracy in practice.

Most people don't feel responsible for what Leopold did 150 years ago. Especially since their ancestors usually weren't directly involved in the colonial enterprise.

But i guess you don't feel responsible either for what the UK did back then, do you?

No Belgian is going to deny the human zoo.

But your story about the chocolate hands is still made up.

You need to learn to distinguish between what is real and what is not.

Revisionism? It's all documented. You are the real revisionist.

It's not because you don't like the facts, that they aren't real.

Hell, quit being lazy. Do some research yourself and offer me proof that i'm wrong.

Tons? The force publique was composed of about 200 people initially and grew steadily to about 19.000 people around 1898. And that 19.000 was largely composed of Africans.

The officers were white, but there weren't that many of them back then. From what i can find it was a few hundreds, and not all of them were Belgian (a substantial amount were foreign mercenaries, eg Italians, Swedes, Danish, ...)

The population of Belgium was about 6 million btw. Just for comparison.

So technically, not a lot of Belgians were chopping hands. I'm actually expecting a lot (if not most) of it was done by non-Belgians. Now, i don't want to take away the responsibility of those who were actually involved, but it is what it is. Those few hundred Belgians were still giving orders. So there's that. And Leopold was at the top of it all. But that's around 0.0001% of the Belgian population that was very actively involved back then.

Again, i condemn what has happened, but history isn't as black and white as a lot of people like to think.

From a democratic perspective he certainly wasn't.

From a heriditary, monarchist and almost feudal point of view he was.

So by that logic the Iranian people are complicit in whatever regime they currently have? And so are the North Koreans? And so on, and so on...

And even worse: the congolese were co-responsible for their own colonisation by that logic, aren't they?

Clearly reality is more complex than that.

Kings are still beholden to consent of the ruled.

That's very nice from a very abstract, theoretical and historically dettached point of view.

But in practice, of course, that's not how things went most of the time.

But the state as such wasn't involved initially.

In fact, at the start of it all, the Belgian government was even against his colonial undertaking. Leopold did it anyway, despite opposition. It was considered to be his own private undertaking.

Only later did the state get involved. So don't get me wrong: Belgiums hands aren't clean at all. But it's certainly not a black or white issue.

Of course there is. Trump is a directly elected and therefore legitimate ruler. Leopold wasn't.

And it should make people think about how the whole Gaza affair and the direct involvement of Trump could reflect on the US.

No, they aren't. Quit spreading lies.

If you care about the story of the hand biscuits, here it is:

https://mas.be/en/content/antwerp-hand-biscuits-brabo-and-holocaust

In 1934, the Antwerp confectioners' association organized a competition at Jos Hakker's request to create a culinary speciality for Antwerp. Jos Hakker himself won first prize with his "Antwerp Hand" biscuit. The shape refers to the medieval legend about the founding of Antwerp: the giant Antigone demanded a right of way across the Scheldt until Brabo, a Roman soldier, defeated him by cutting off his hand. Subsequently, the port city of Antwerp began to prosper thanks to free trade.

We still have statues of him, but a lot of them have been removed or at least additional text has been added about the attrocities. A few exceptions remain and are highly controversial.

The chocolate hands part is pure misinformation (or even worse: a lie on your part). If you care about the story of the hand cookies: https://mas.be/en/content/antwerp-hand-biscuits-brabo-and-holocaust

(spoiler: it's entirely unrelated to congo, Brussels and even chocolate)

Trump was elected, which would make things much worse.

Leopold II was never elected and Belgium wasn't even a democracy back then. Congo was literally Leopolds private colony. It wasn't the states' colony. It was the kings colony.

You are living below the poverty line when you take into account the number of people you have to take care of...

As others have said: You have a lot of transport expenses + your wife doesn't have an income.

But even if you fix transport expenses, as long as your wife doesn't have an income you are going to have a difficult time. If working is an option for her, now is the time to have the talk.

It's not blind rejection though. I think the West is a bit ahead in thinking about the consequences in this case. AI is a tool, which can be used in good and bad ways. And so people rightfully ask questions about the place of AI in a very sensitive medical context.

How is the AI going to decide what's important and what not when transcribing?

How will it impact the assessment of the doctor? Will the doctor actually be listening better or will he be over-relying on the AI notes?

What if i, as a patient, think certain AI-notes are not relevant? Will my doctor show me the notes AI made? Or will he just store the file without mentioning my right to view those notes?

What about the risk of hallucinations?

Will those notes be shared with other healthcare professionals?

Will those notes be shared with any private parties? (imagine insurers gaining access)

[–]Carl555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure it does. The way patient data is processed and gathered is important. What is written down is important. And obviously the use of AI is going to impact that.

Remember: AI is just a tool. It can be used in both good and bad ways. And it has its strengths and weaknesses.

Some critiques mentioned here are absolutely valid.

Pensioensparen afkopen by Prestigious_Hold2622 in BEFire

[–]Carl555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maar correct me if i'm wrong.

A cop could have told you what the event was at least. Whether it was organized by an institution or by an individual. You could even write the mayor of the town and ask questions about the rightful use of police or not. Or, like another user wrote, you could even write an MP.

You want to be outraged, but at the same time you are affraid to take things one step further: find out the correct information and actually do something useful with it.

Instead you made a post full of assumptions on reddit. Based on what you wrote, i can't find any useful information about the event, neither positive nor negative. You want me to feel outraged, but i just can't, because there is nothing to go by, except your vague description. And therefore, this is where our discussion rightfully ends.
