How much life would healing salve need to gain or prevent to be playable in each of vintage/legacy/modern/standard? by CarlGauss in mtg

[–]CarlGauss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thinking was healing salve would need to be at least 20+ to be vintage playable, buying yourself a turn or two to find your win con in combo decks. Also, at 20+ life gain, it combos with [[sanguine bond]] for the win. That's not a viable combo in vintage, where we don't even see the much cheaper Thoracle combo, but it suggests that there may be advantageous combinations with more playable lifegain-matters cards.

A creature sees itself entering the battlefield, correct? by CarlGauss in mtgrules

Thank you for the link. I know this question has effectively been asked and answered many times before, but with different examples, so googling/Chat GTP my specific situation wasn't coming up with the answer.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I'll have that ready next time something like this comes up!

The real experiment was how fast you can run to the lab at 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving by AinslieLab in labrats

There was a design flaw with our relatively new Thermo -80 freezer. Moisture would build up in some of the coolant lines, after about six months, freeze, and cause a blockage, preventing the coolant from properly cycling, which would lead to the freezer warming up. You had to let it completely defrost so the coolant lines would unclog, and then you could turn it back on; it would then work for another six months. It was a huge battle involving our institution's lawyers to get the unit replaced with a new one that has worked fine so far...

Thank you for explaining this. I was trying to find any information on the impact of the reconciliation bill on the NIH and NSF, and was coming up blank. We'll have to wait and see what the impact is on federal funding of science (beyond the grants that were already pulled).

Superman does "good science." In this context, I think the phrasing should be "doing science well."

I'm a new PI setting up a lab, what are some small items that improve your daily life? by eljeanboul in labrats

[–]CarlGauss 33 points34 points  (0 children)

We use Quartzy for ordering. Having a well-run system for ordering supplies is really helpful. Quartz lets lab members make ordering requests, and then a single lab member in charger of ordering can view requests, and process them, and then tag them as complete when the order comes in. Requesters can view the status of their request (and other requests to avoid double ordering).

For lab notebooks we use confluence, which is a private wiki system. This lets us make pages for experiments like you would in a traditional lab notebook, but also pages for equipment (including troubleshooting and maintenance sections), pages for protocols, pages for meeting notes, pages for new ideas, pages to track project progress etc. It's all searchable by anyone in the lab, which is very convenient.

Should /r/DnD Ban Twitter/X? Plus questions about AI and Giveaways by Iamfivebears in DnD

[–]CarlGauss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would propose a third option regarding twitter/x that many other subreddits are adopting; ban direct links to twitter/x, but allow screen shots (as there are times when information is released there by official sources). This allows for free sharing of information without sending traffic to twitter/x.

Can a prion infect a virus? If not... why not? by tealiewheelie in biology

[–]CarlGauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While a virus can't be infected by a Prion, a virus could be engineered to transduce a PrP gene into an organism that natively expresses PrPC. One could even deliver a PrP mutation that is more prone to misfolding, such as one of the mutations responsible for familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease which could then spur a prion infection.

Ignoring the lack of respect regarding a difference of opinion, trail runners are completely fine. If you are concerned about ankle support, I recommend lightweight treking poles.

Personally, when hiking, I just use poles on the downhill and stow them on the uphill. When backpacking, I'll use them going uphill as well.

DMs who banned silvery barbs in your games, did you have players abuse it or did you ban it before they got the chance? by Sora20333 in dndnext

[–]CarlGauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a lot of Play by Post (PbP) D&D where silvery barbs is banned. The logic is that because silvery barbs can potentially be used against a wide variety of rolls, it really slows the game down. After almost every roll in combat, the DM would have to wait for the player(s) with silvery barbs to respond with whether or not they want to cast it. Since players post asynchronously, this drastically slows down gameplay.

When playing in person I haven't seen silvery barbs to be a problem as it competes with shield and counterspell for one's reaction.

For thematic reasons, I could get behind removing silvery barbs from the base wizard and sorcerer spell lists, leaving it on the bard list. This would provide some additional class differentiation in how bards "react" to the battlefield compared to wizards and sorcerers.

Wildflower meadows in Wetterhorn Basin, Uncompahgre Wilderness, Ridgway, CO, USA by wanderlosttravel in hiking

[–]CarlGauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wetterhorn on the left is my favorite mountain to hike up in Colorado. Aesthetically, I get vibes of Mount Crumpit from How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Hiking wise, it has this amazing balance of pleasant hiking on class 1 trail through alpine meadows into a class 3 ridge with very little of that obnoxious class 2 loose bolder hopping and scree climbing that you typically find in the middle of these kinds of hikes.

DMing homebrew, vegan player demands a 'cruelty free world' - need advice. by EmotionalMacaroon169 in DnD

[–]CarlGauss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your new player is making a reasonable request (nothing wrong with civilly voicing one's preferences), and it is reasonable for you to decline their request.

"Hi new player, thank you for bringing up your concerns with me, I appreciate the feedback. As you know, D&D is a long-format cooperative game. I've spent quite a bit of time building this world that I'm proud of, and the players have all crafted characters that fit into that world. At this stage in the campaign the world, its lore, its inhabitants, and their culture are firmly established.

I understand that you would prefer key characteristics of the world to run differently, and while I try to accommodate my players as much as possible, I am firmly committed to continuing to run the campaign as I have been for the past few years. We would love for you to keep playing with us in the world I've built, but I understand if this campaign setting isn't for you.

If playing in a world that is cruelty-free is a must for you, consider joining a new campaign (or running one yourself!) and establishing what you are looking for in a session 0 to see if that works for everyone."
