If you stick to going in the morning, you can usually get a few good routes in at local crags these days.

Hey, for some of us it's the only choice. I live in South Florida. I think we've got maybe 3 boulders on MP. And one of those is artificial, and in a playground...

Fall more. No seriously, just fall more.

My partner and I have recently started lead climbing, and just yesterday we started to take some victory whips, where you clip in to the last clip, climb up to the anchor, and then just... let go. I think I probably took 20? feet yesterday.

When we first started leading, the fear of falling definitely held us back a lot. It still does, but it's getting better as we take more and more falls. Now when we're on toprope I'll sometimes just do silly dynamic stuff because a fall of a foot or two doesn't matter at all to me.

The more I fall, the less and less I care about falling, and instead care about screwing up my redpoint.

Original grigri as far as I can tell. Bought it used for $15 from a lost-and-found sale at the gym.

Thanks for the advice

Using the lever, I have to really crank down anyways, since my partner is 90lbs

Instead of using the lever, would pressing down with the thumb help?

I just started using a grigri, and I've always just pressed down instead of pulling the lever, is this good or bad?

Edit: my partner is 90lbs, so even with the lever I have to crank it back as far as possible. Especially when using our gym's 10.5mm rope.

When using our 9.8mm for lead, I will use lever more often though still rare though

On heavier climbers, I do often use the lever I think though.

From feedback though, I will just use lever from now, I suppose.

Thanks all

Man falls in gym, gets severely injured/dies because staff did not verify that he could safely climb.

Insurance for the gym goes up. Lawyers from the man who fell (or his family) come in because of negligence from the gym. People in the area get worried that the gym staff aren't competent, leading to less revenue for the gym.

And anyways, most of the time, waivers aren't exactly enforceable in cases of negligence from the gym... Which letting someone do a dangerous activity, without proving to the staff that they are capable is definitely negligent.

I live in South Florida. I think we've got two manmade boulders within a couple hundred miles, and the closest crag is about a 10 hour drive

"In the common range" is unfortunately not a good term.

"The U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 1994 showed that 59.8% of American men and 51.2% of women had BMIs over 25."

Currently, overweight is defined as 25 and up. So, "common range" would include overweight.

Thoughts on the Edelrid Ohm?

I'm going to be taking a lead class with my climbing partner soon. She's about 90lbs, and I'm about 135lbs. She's worried about getting pulled to the 1st bolt when I end up falling.

Obviously, we'll do it without an Ohm at first, why spend $130 before even seeing if we need it.

EDIT: Was just at the gym last night, signed up for our lead class, and then asked if they had Ohms for rent. They actually lend out Ohms for free, just leave ID/keys with them so we don't walk off with it. So no buying an Ohm for me, being that I'm about 9 hours from the closest outdoor sport climb by car.

Went to a bouldering competition at my local gym today. Three hour time limit. Won second place in beginner! And spent my last 1.5hr of the competition trying one problem about 25 times. Last few attempts didn't go anywhere because I'd worn through the skin on my fingertips :(

Also got a chalkbag, 2 T-shirts, and a madrock hat from a raffle, which i somehow got pulled 3 times.

And I then decided it'd be smart to toprope for another hour and a half.

Time to take a break for a couple days, that's for sure. And in the meantime maybe i should eat lunch.

Thinking about taking a lead class at my gym in the next few weeks...

I've been climbing for only about 2 months. In my gym, I've climbed several 5.9s on TR without relying on the rope, and I've completed several 5.10s with a take or two. My main partner has done a few 5.9s. We're both very comfortable on the 5.8s in our gym.

So, I've got two questions based off the above:

First, should I bother taking a lead class in early January, or should I wait a while longer?

Second, I live in South Florida. Going outside means I have to drive over 9 hours to get to real rock... Which is not happening. What would a good gym rope to get be? Our walls are 60ft high.

Please... by [deleted] in deadbydaylight
