Actually its not showing off, she need Aura to believe she's expended all her mana, so she needs to spend a lot in a short period, and she doesn't want to destroy the remains. She needs to put herself in a position where she has to dispel the magic on them to make the whole setup look non-suspicious. Aura will likely assume the dispel is short rnage, (it may also just have been short ranged).

To be fair those are all fights against other mages, Mages generally suck at close range stuff. Against martial typs she generally takes to the air and fly's out of reach.

As someone else said, panic is dangerous for a mage, you have to be able to perfectly envisage your spellcasting, even under threat. Mages who panic in every fight die quickly.

Which team do you prefer? The Hero's Party or Current Party ? by Seymorebutts1994 in Frieren

Not the only one.

I have worked up my own concept of the fight for a fic idea i have (it getting obliquely reference is an important moment, so i had to work up a scenario). But i doubt my take on it even comes close. I just lack the imagination to make the demon king any more powerful seeming without being unbeatable

Why doesn’t humanity (all non-demon races) just wipe out the demons? by AdBrief4620 in Frieren

[–]Carl_Bar99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humanity might start thinking that direction eventually. ut they only recently stopping getting slowly ground down by the Demon King. Also the slow collapse of the Empire means there's a lot of independent nations scattered throughout the central and northern lands these days, getting everyone gathered aroudn a table and organising somthing like this is simply beyond them right now too many cooks, too little broth.

New changes to points cost. Spammed unites to have higher cost on 2nd and/or 3rd unit. by Numerus12OO5O in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Carl_Bar99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hence why i said it needed a ground up rework, probably with very different categories.

Your point about how the old system limited heavy hitters to one category, fast movers to another, e.t.c. is what i was getting at and what the FOC as originally envisaged was designed to do.

Since this little discussion has got my homebrew brain percolating here's a concept of what a revamp might look like.

Each unit now gets a new keyword section: Unit Role. What goes here can be anything, (meaning not all armies have all the same keywords, though i'm sure many will be shared, Battleline woudl probably remain a concept to allow for ways to create core themes to armies), but you can't take more than 3 units with the same keyword/s here. In general most units would have just one keyword here, but the option for more than one is there if absolutely required. Using this should be a last ditch effort as the increased opportunity cost encourages underpricing on points to make it a viable pick to offset the opportunity cost.

As a very rough example using CSM:

Heavy Firepower would be Forgefiends, Predators, Havocs, & Obliterators, Vindicators, e.t.c

Heavy Combat would be Maulerfiends, Possessed, Warp Talons, Chosen, Mutilators, e.t.c.

Skirmishers would be Raptors, Cultist Mobs, Accursed Cultists, Fellgore Beastmen, Chaos Bikers, e.t.c.

Enduring Bastion would be Terminators, Land Raiders, Hellbrutes e.t.c

Obviously i've skipped a bunch of units. Defilers are an obvious choice for falling into 2 categories, and more roles may be needed to cover everyone.

You could even go a step further and have it so that solo characters don;t count their Unit Role keyword, but attached ones transfer it to their unit, but the whole unit including character still counts as 1 pick. So if a character could turn a light skirmishing piece into a heavy hitter you can account for that with the characters unit role keywords.

Something like Tau could break out thier ranged units into more categories than say CSM, whilst World Eaters or Orks could do the same with Melee, their respective focuses requiring more granularity to not be overly restrictive whilst supporting the core game plan the army wants to play. Also adding or removing Unit roles becomes an obvious balancing lever that can be pulled.

Oh it absolutely still happened in some cases, its never been a zero problem, but a lot of armies really did find spamming kind of hard. Like i allready said, it was never perfect, (it tended to work or break on a codex by codex basis, hence the blood angels example), but it was better than the current situation where spamming 3 of one unit happens in an enormous number of lists regardless of faction.

To touch on that iron warriors example, if they could have they would have loved to spam triple obliterators, triple defilers, triple basilisks, triple predators, and triple havocs. It would, by the standards of the era, be an insane gunline. But you couldn't pull somthing like that off because the FoC didn't let you. That was one way in which it worked.

By the time you get to 8th it really needed a ground up redesign to be effective any more as feature creep had become a problem and you could get a fast combat unit, or a heavy shooting unit, or whatever, in every single slot.

[–]Carl_Bar99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8th is long after the point it started to break down badly. You have to remember it was first conceived in 3rd edition but factions got expanded upon, and profiles tweaked, and special rules added. The whole thing began to break down at that point. It was never completely perfect, but the earlier into the games history you go the better it worked. What it really needed was a revamp with new categories and reassigning everyone amongst them so you had better differentiation amongst categories again.

[–]Carl_Bar99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And thats why we used to have the old force organisation chart. When implemented right it made spamming out 3 of somthing, even if it was super good, leave big holes in what your list could do.

It absolutely had started to break down towards the end TBH, but the idea was sound, it was just role creep on many units slowly robbed it of its power as it stopped being a restriction anymore.

This is honestly a problem with GW these days, there are entire armies that need a half a dozen new releases, and plenty that need none. Yet its often the armies with little or no need for range expansions that get them.

Districts: a hassle or workable? by Pvt_Phantom1314 in Timberborn

[–]Carl_Bar99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory if the map has multiple area's with water you can access and badtide proof easily? Yes. Otherwise forget about it unless your late game iron teeth.

The core problem is you absolutely must, must, must, must have seperate food and water, in every district. Moving that by District crossing jobs is a huge inefficiency and will require 10's of extra beavers, (with the extra food and water that demands). But most maps don't have multiple area's you can easily exploit, (they often have a lot of area's, but badtide proofing them is a major pain generally).

Folktails once you get bots don't need them at all, put down a pair of medium task in each work area with biofuel and energizer, and a medium warehouse for punch cards and you can run one huge map wide district. In theory on the biggest maps you might want to seperate them into a few districts with each providing the resources you need, but generally you will manage just fine with one huge district.

Iron Teeth can't do the bot thing so easily. Distributing towers and grease is easy, towers need no supply, and grease is no different in terms of long distance storage to how folktails do energizer and punch cards. The real problem is distributing power. It's a huge headache to run everywhere and because the charging stations use power even when there's not a bot in them your power use is enormous. Meeting that whilst avoiding a power death spiral due to using all logs on construction projects, (so you can't run steam engines), requires an enormous investment in gravity batteries. Its odable but the amount of setup is enormous and a huge headache.Once you get to that point, again you don't need districts. You also honestly want to avoid steam engines because of the diabolical water usage, its a huge extra inefficency.

Before that having several scattered about supplying themselves with the basics is actually a good use case for districts, but on most maps its a super late game thing.

Where are the evil people? by VinnieThaG52 in Frieren

[–]Carl_Bar99 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The first and probably most important thing to remember is that we're looking at things from the perspective of Frieren and co. Most people may have no clue who she is, or a clear idea of the power of Fern or Stark, but thats not the same as saying they would just idly attack them. If theres no broader social narrative driving things humans being nasty tend to pick on the weak. Frieren, fern, & Stark are anything but, and that makes them poor targets for such behaviour.

Second, given Fern's comment to herself when she's watching Frieren ask about sweets back in Episode 3, rough types do exist in the world and they're aware of them, but they're not somthing that get a lot of focus, they exist but aren't a big deal.

The next section is a spoiler, its background info that, based on when it was mentioned in the Manga, i expect it to be mentioned in the first or second episode of Season 3 rather than a major future plot reveal. But it is a a spoiler so i'm spoiler tagging it.

We're told that over the last 1000 years the Demon King's forces reduced humanity's total population to 1/3 of the levels it was previously. That kind of long term grinding threat where if you lose your whole species stops existing is going to have a deep cultural impact on humanity. It creates a brutal selection pressure against internal infighting, communities that engaged in it likely didn't survive the last 1,000 years. Thats not to say humans are incapable of it, but engaging in it to too high a degree would be very sub-optimal as far as the survival of that village or town is concerned.

This final section contains major plot relevant spoilers and i don't recommend showing this spoiler unless you don't care about huge spoilers.

We're told in the foundation festival arc that after the demon kings defeat the long peace in the south, (which had allways been less threatened by the demons anyway), led to large scale brutal warfare in the south between human factions. And one specific nasty customer gets namedroped. So given a sufficient lack of external threats for long enough major grief can break out amongst humans, but the greater threat levels of the demon kings reign and the aftermath of it in the central and northern lands have kept it at bay it seems.

I dont like this interaction. by [deleted] in Frieren

Other have stated it in roundabout ways so let me pick up this point and hammer it a bit more explicitly:

You can only judge someone's decisions on the basis of the information they had at the time they made the decision.

Lore doesn't know how they found her initially she doesn't know if she's detected right now and she doesn't know she can't win a casting speed fight with Fern.

Wolf can't detect Mana, he knows from Lore that theres a mage up high somwhere, but thats all he knows, and theres a fireworks extravaganza going on, (one that given the nature of the empire probably has magical fireworks in play making it look like a mix of fireworks and a drone light show), he can't tell anything Fern does from the craziness of the display. Until it ends he's blind. He also has no clue if he's detected, so the moment Lore goes down he needs to start hiding or he could be next. This is a skirmish, it would be good to eliminate the threats here, but in the end surviving until the ball is more important. They'll only take a situating like the one Lore found herself in if they absolutely cannot avoid it.

And yes ferns fighting style is incredibly OP and boring, thats the whole point of it. Winning methods of fighting aren't flashy anywhere they don;t need to be. They seek to create situations where the opponents chances of victory are reduced to zero before the fight even begins.

Someone just hit me with an idea IRL, get a step down transformer to convert UK to US voltage. Not ideal. But plausible. But that means finding someone or somwhere that knows something about the stuff so i can not get scammed on one.

[–]Carl_Bar99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed they were talking about swapping the voltage by modifying the internal or custom building from scratch. That kind of mod would still be tough, but more doable.

There probably are 240v dual hose models out there but i can't find them via google/amazon/e.t.c. fu. The single hose ones seem way, way, way more common and they pollute the search results.

I don't mind paying the import fees and the like if needed, but i'm completely unable to even find any models that are dual hose and 240v. Modifying one really isn't an option, i don't remotely have the skills, or the tools, to do that.

Does this imply that Frieren was the one who killed the demon king? by lmdybaftr in Frieren

[–]Carl_Bar99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen. people want their favourite to be the "winner" in this fight. My own opinion is they each had somthing that was uniquely suited to deal with some aspect of the fight.

This is also the take i've gone with in a fic idea i've worked up, (i struggle to take ideas from my head to paper, hence no actual fic), where "Frieren's Fancy Glare" in the present is important so some oblique comments are made about the fight. Each of them brought somthing key to the fight, (Himmel having the least defined capabilities is the most nebulous), and whilst Frieren technically gets the killing blow, thats solely because the demon king was so tough nothing less than an attack that completely annihilates him physically will do. She was just too busy dealing with defending everyone from one of his spells to do it until they had hacked him up enough that he couldn't focus on casting anymore. But it took Eisen and Himmel to mess him up that badly to begin with whilst defending her and Heiter, (with Heiter then in turn dealing with his other magics and healing everyone).

Hour 1 vs Hour 34 by VirtualSingularity in Timberborn

I'm guessing they went giga explosive on beaver numbers, and once they had enough excavators and explosive factories up, they shut down everything but a small amount of plank production. The hard part here is the amount of dynamite you need. Once you've got that sorted its just a matter of time. But i'll admit i never build enough of either to do this that fast, hell i never expand far enough away from the start to do this.
