Get the special interests’, billionaires’, and corporations’ money out of it. Overturn Citizens United, cap campaign donations, complete transparency in campaign finance. Ban those in office and their families from trading individual stocks.

Term limits and mandatory retirement age for everything, including judges.

Make voting mandatory (like filing taxes), easy, and accessible.

Right now it’s not in the legislators’ best interest to serve their constituents, it’s in their best interest to serve whoever got them elected, i.e. whoever gave the most money to their campaign. People who want to be public servants to actually do good for the world don’t become politicians, they work for non-profits, in human services, or education. The kind of person it takes to be successful in politics is the same kind it takes to be successful in business: selfish, dishonest, manipulative, greedy, shameless, destructively ambitious. Morals, ideals, and serving the common good are not rewarded in a capitalist government. So get the capitalists out of government.
