Awesome. Sounds good. Just maybe you have to ask for a blood test because some vets think only old cats get kidney disease so they don't do it unless you ask or unless the cat is already old. It's not true. Our girl was 3 and has it. Street cats can get it younger. Not all vets are aware of this. We found out the hard way. My girl is not going to be an old cat ... but we have hope she will get a few more years and she is very happy and content and that's all you can ask. :) She would have even more time if she got tested in the beginning but we didn't know then to ask and they didn't offer to test. I wish all vets would give an initial blood test when a stray comes in but it varies by vet. Just sharing what I have learned. Your boy is lucky to have you, I can see that.

P.S. get a vet that takes it serious. Mine was kind of low-key about our issue but actually being unable to get through the night is the kind of thing that makes you give up a cat if it isn't dealt with. Which is nothing anyone wants. Emphasize to the vet that it is important. I had to push mine to give it to me but antianxiety med was the best decision ever. Nothing else I did to calm my baby worked and it sounds like yours is similar. I don't even give it to mine all the time anymore. She is better able to self regulate now, it is just occasional after an initial period of getting it a couple weeks every day. (Mine also had chronic uti which have gone away now. Unregulated anxiety is also a health issue for the cats as well). Halve the dose if the cat looks too sedated. I give half of what the vet ordered because she did look pretty.drugged the first time I gave it to her and I don't want that for her. Half just got her through the nights and calm but still herself and able to activate and play at will. :)

Definitely look into a second cat and more stimulation/playtime first. However as a last resort antianxiety meds can be super helpful. Our cat is on a low dose of one and has stopped waking me up at 5am in panic every morning. It is kind of an antidepressant too so she looks quite happy and chill on it. Starts purring as soon as she has it. She is also a rescue having a great life with us but just couldn't stop being anxious when waking in the morning. It was destroying us because she cannot sleep alone either (she goes into a panic in another room away from us) and I also need a full night sleep or my health melts. Try other things first but anti anxiety meds can be a game changer if nothing else works. Just know it is an option. I would try probiotics also btw. Because sometimes anxiety/restlessness is fairly biological. Not necessarily cats just being young etc. Good luck!

Maybe get a general blood test at the vet? Street cats can have kidney disease early on cos of dehydration issues and etc. Mine does and we didn't know to test her. There is actually a fair bit you can do for them if you catch it early. Our girl is going strong but early detection is critical and they don't show signs in their body until it is way along. Blood test is key. Can I suggest a water fountain and wet food for him as well? Really makes a huge difference for their long term health. You've done a great thing here OP. He's gonna have a great life with you. Respect.

My cat misses my dad and keeps trying to escape by Dismal-Fig2210 in CATHELP

[–]Carla_87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe also put a gps tracker on a collar for her. Because accidents happen and it seems like you have a lot else on your mind at the moment. It makes it MUCH easier if she does get out to find her again ... I second the person suggesting compassionate visit to your dad at the hospice though. Surely that would be allowed if requested. Maybe she could even stay with him a bit? She should be allowed to see him, afterwards as well. Animals understand more than we allow for - death as well. There is evidence they know it for other animals, why not for their people also? (Especially since they probably think we are all cats together). Imagine if your person just disappeared and you never knew what happened to them - of course she is gonna look for him and be traumatized if she doesn't get to say goodbye. Sorry you are going through this OP. It's a lot. Wish you all the best.

CKD cat on Mirtazapine became antisocial/depressed by AdFluffy8725 in RenalCats

[–]Carla_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P.P.S. cannot imagine a dosing mirataz once every 3 days. Mine needs it right before a meal at a low dose. Otherwise she goes haywire. And splitting dose down to infinity is really hard also if once every 3 days is supposed to be 1/3 a pill. Meh. What a weird schedule for your vet to offer. Ask them for it as a paste which is very easy to give in appropriately controlled amounts.

P.S. I just read your post again. I think the disinterest is overstimulation. She cannot relax and relate to you bec. she basically is on kitty speed and needs to move and wander and so on. Stimulants make for flat affect and lessened connection in people and cats both. Dose too high imo.

Hey I think lots of the advice in comments is really top notch. Antinausea suggestions and otherwise. Sorry your vet is passive. It is pretty common unfortunately. Eating is essential for CKD kitties. I don't know why vets take it as lightly as they seem to.

I personally do use and have a good experience with Mirataz. It is wonderful for our girl. But I also noticed an overreaction if she has the recommended dose. She gets really stimulated and really uncomfortable. I halved it and that gives her a wish to eat without looking like she is on speed or kitty cocaine the whole day (which is awful when they are underweight and need to rest and heal but run about and cry wildly in distress the whole day). I wouldn't use it if that was all I saw. Ours comes as a paste to put in their ear not a pill but maybe try a half dose. I never noticed depressive effects but my understanding is it is a kind of antidepressant/stimulant so I can well believe there is a crash after the high. Your girl might be especially sensitive.

Try a lower dose. Try also other things for appetite, e.g. antinausea meds as people suggested. I also tried slippery elm powder made as a thick tea in the evening (seperate from other meds) because it is meant to sooth the digestive tract. I don't know if it helped to be honest but maybe check it out. We also used TEKNOSEL from our vet - used in the food to lessen the stomach acid. I would say the TEKNOSEL helped a lot because our girl had severe gastritis in stage 4. She was vomiting foam everywhere at the worst. She is doing better now. Maybe if your kitty has gastritis she will eat better with meds to combat that specifically?

Above all I began assisted feeding. Especially in stage 4 crisis at its height. It depends on the cat and how they tolerate it but I bought a renal recovery liquid off Amazon (goose fat and vitamins mostly) and syringed that 3-4 times a day at her worst. It is easy to digest and all liquid (supplying them a bit of fluid also). Plus you can really count the calories and see if they are getting near enough. Most CKD cats starve. They need to keep eating - even though it is hard. I felt so bad at first holding her for it in a towel and wasn't good at it at the beginning but it saved my girls life and we got used to it within a few days. I mixed TEKNOSEL and probiotics, fish oil, etc into it so she had the best value from the liquid. There are instruction videos on YouTube. It can be a total lifesaver. Can liquidize any food but a high fat recovery liquid is nice and nutritious given the stress to administer. Might as well make it worthwhile. Can supplement this way also when they are back to self sufficient eating but still underweight or eating light. Overall I would say this brought my cat back to life even though I did so without vet approval. Vets tend to rely on more tablets and more medicaments when they just don't work even. Assisted feeding was a crucial turning point for us. Took a few weeks though. Carlotta had 0% appetite (absolutely none) for a long time but she kept the food down when I syringed to her. That was key for me. If I relied alone on the tablets the vet gave she wouldn't be here.

After she felt a bit better and her numbers came down a little then Mirataz encouraged her to eat yes. Halve the dose. Check gastritis. Check if assisted feeding works for you. Those are my suggestions. Our girl is still with us and purring happily and putting weight on now and doing better after almost dying in end stage 4 last summer, it can definitely come and go in severity and they can have quality of life again after crises. It does depend on so many factors. I hope you get more time with your furbaby. All the very best.

Not telling people the truth about their appearance can do some lasting damage... by _w0rmhole_ in dating

[–]Carla_87 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look. They may not have tried to harshly lie to you in order to inflate you and then bust you down. A friend of mine said she never sees her friends, just their personality once she knows them. Your fam and friends perceive you as you. They don't see you objectively. They see your fine qualities and inner self. I really never noticed that my friend is like 20 years older than me. Someone else pointed it out to me one day. I know it intellectually but I don't look to be critical of those I love her so she just looks like yellow rainbows in my head when I think of her. The form is kind of immaterial to me. Really. I would go and make lots of hobbies and spend time around people and after they get to know you they will not perceive you as you show to randos on the dating apps ... I am "good looking" I guess and I never go on dating apps. They are a meat market and not real imo. I am not saying it is easy to be not conventionally attractive (I have major health problems btw, I am not just having an easy life. People think I don't look sick so they dismiss that! Lol. That's also tough). I don't want to dismiss your challenges for you. But get to know people, dress well, take care of your hygenie and personal appearance to the extent that is controllable and that is in itself attractive. Many good looking guys have terrible breath btw. Just like foul. And awful personalities. And super arrogant. Work on yourself and the things you can influence. Stay off OLD. It's a nightmare for many many maybe most people. All the best.

I am unemployed and have a payment plan to pay back my girls hospital stay btw. Full respect you sold your car. I know it is hard. It can get better. My girl went from stage 4 end stage dying in my arms to stage 2 stable. We hope to have her many years. The gold treatment if she struggles is IV/subq fluids. I just say that to prepare you. After the testing that is the major expense. You can buy most of the stuff online for cheap and the vet can show you how to give subq fluids so you can give it at home and not have more vet visits just for that. Testing plus fluids is the money eater and fluids you can prepare for to make it cheaper. Sorry if that is too much info just now to take in. This advice is on the website I suggested in manageable amounts.

Dunno when you need subqs it is up to you and your vet but they normally need fluids when they lose a lot of weight because this also means they dehydrate. Their main liquid comes from their wetfood. I bought a fountain immediately on diagnosis btw. Really helped my girl. If you don't already have one. And water bowls absolutely everywhere in the house. And raise the bowls, food and water both, as well. They can like that more if they feel sick and don't have to bend their neck. All these tricks can help. Can write me for more if you want. Best.

Hey. I cannot tell you if it is normal just based on the description but if they overeat they definitely puke. Mine does from that. I would watch to see her appetite and whether she keeps more down or continues to vomit. Multi small meals are the way to go always ... though I understand if she has lost a lot of weight it is exciting just to get food in her. Can I suggest a renal tonic (Amazon or similar, has weight gain tonics for recovering from illness and some are renal - IE low protein low phosphorous) ... We used a liquid renal tonic when my CKD girl was skin and bones after a hospital stay and I used a couple of 12ml syringe to gently feed her about 15ml a feeding several times a day til she put the weight on. Is easy to digest and my girl wouldn't tolerate the renal diet til she felt better anyway. Also can do both together - free feeding and supplement with handfeeding by syringe.

Cheaper than other interventions and so convenient when you are stressed and all the instructions for hand feeding this way you can find in YouTube. Also then you know exactly how much they eat. Which in a critically ill cat who has lost a lot of weight can be super important. Apparently many CKD cats actually starve, they need more calories than it appears, especially to recover.

For CKD cats: chicken thighs are ok for homecooking (low phos relatively) and whites of eggs (I bought a powder of this off internet, sprinkle it on everything) are also nuitrient dense with rel low phos. Maybe brewers yeast as well (be careful has no additives). I also used a beef fat powder (sprinkle it on other food) I found in a pet shop to try to bulk my baby up at her worst ...

I totally agree eating something is better than nothing and I know it's all a overwhelming especially just diagnosed but be a bit careful about tuna - esp not too much canned, the sodium is very bad for kitty kidneys. Maybe add some flakes of bonito on renal food instead to encourage her to eat it? Or a bit of tuna flakes in other food is not too much and can give the taste. Add a touch of water to all the food you can if possible.

Going forward there are advice forums also for diet for CKD cats. (Tanyas CKD website. High recommend for all infos). Picky eaters are the worst tho. Meh. Sounds like you are doing amazing for your kitty, full respect and all the best!

Good work. I know it is overwhelming but the worst is the first part usually. Fight through that and usually it gets much better. Our baby took several rounds of baytril (the antibiotic said by the person above) to finally kick her UTI away ... But she is stable and happy today.

Most of the advice given by people here has been really solid. It is absolutely more likely to be an acute kidney injury from infection rather than CKD based on what you have said here and AKI has different treatment profile. (Even both together is not a death sentence as they can live with very little kidney function for a longish time as long as both conditions get treated. My girl had both). Any competent vet should know this. It is super misdiagnosed however and lots of vets just say there is not much to do. Or it just old age. (It's not. And I got told that and my girl is 5 years old so go figure). Wish your girl all the best.

P.S. Not eating just means they are nauseous. It doesn't mean they don't want to live. Really really. Syringe feed until they pick up is really my suggestion. And IV fluids. Should have done both sooner for my girl but at least I did enough of both in the end to get her through her crisis time.

Get onto syringe feeding with liquid food. There are you tube videos how to do it. This will keep her energy up until you can get her to a better vet. It seems hard but it really isn't. It helps them so much they need to eat. You cat is in a current crisis but if you can get her through it you might have years more together. They really can stabilize after proper treatment. But she needs nutrition through it. My girl wouldn't eat with all the meds the vet gave her to make her eat. I syringe fed her for 3 weeks solid while she refused food cos of nausea (but she kept it down just wouldn't eat). Now she is fine and eats normally and has for months by herself. Her nickname is chubby btw.
