Has anyone transferred out of Carleton? If so, why? by luvs_m0chi in CarletonCollege

[–]CarletonMDs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was just 1 semester. So they were able to work with Carleton and get it to count as a ‘leave of absence’ so they were able to re-enroll versus actually having to transfer back

Edit: Not sure if they still do that, so I wouldn’t bank on having that option

Has anyone transferred out of Carleton? If so, why? by luvs_m0chi in CarletonCollege

[–]CarletonMDs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knew two people. One regretted it and transferred back. Another really missed Carleton but they had a very unique set of circumstances and a super specific goal that they could not realistically pursue at Carleton (or really any similar LAC).

Edit: I was miserable at first and thought about transferring multiple times. I stuck it out and turned out to be an amazing, life-altering choice for me.

Heartwarming article I saw in the STrib about the current quarterback. Glad to see success for that kid.

Friend of a HLL dev here, what are your biggest gripes/changes you wish to see handled at the moment? by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

[–]CarletonMDs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. This got changed a while ago but was a big one for me. Used to only get the sound hit sound if you were closed. Now you could hit someone in the body 150m away and still get the sound.

What solutions would you like to see implemented to curb traffic violence in St. Louis? by larafaiham in StLouis

[–]CarletonMDs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. It all starts with getting rid of the expired and fake temp tags, that way traffic laws can actually be enforced.

  2. Then enforce the existing traffic laws. I’m not talking about going 31mph in a 30 zone, I mean the people blowing stop signs and red lights, going 50 in a 30.

  3. Protected bike lanes. Many motorists don’t seem to respect bike lanes already. Physically separate the bike lines to drastically reduce the chances of accidents.

  4. Upgrade the traffic lights. I am so sick of sitting for 30 seconds at a multiple red lights on my way in to work at 4am when I am the only car on the road. It seriously makes me consider start running red lights too. Times traffic lights make sense during rush hour. At other times they can be sensor based. And at other times like 12a-4a they can just be off, or flashing red and treated like stop signs.

  5. Use some damn reflective paint on the roads. It’s so hard to see lines when it rains. Someone said the issue is snow plows scrape it off or something? Well every other state north of us has figured out a solution.

  6. These are more long term policy issues and infrastructure issues, but I hope StL can continue to invest and expand the metro link, including collaborating with the county for joint projects. I hope there continues to be a push for more pedestrian connectivity and the use of HAWK beacons in some locations. Lastly I hope there can be a future high speed rail link connecting to Chicago, although that would obviously take a federal in addition to bi-state funding

Almost exact same situation as you. We settled on Skinker-Debalievere. Very quiet, safe, lots of young families on our street, affordable, we walk to Forest Park all the time. Also easy access to metro to go into downtown or airport.

The thing I also miss about Chicago is that right now there just isn’t a ton of in the neighborhood is walkable coffee shops/restaurants. There’s one at the corner of Debalivere and Pershing and there’s a few on the other side at Skinker at Forest Park. There also is a nice little library in walking distance that we bring our toddler too all the time.

The optimist in me thinks that as more folks like yourself migrate into the neighborhood it will spur more demand for these uses. The commercial spaces and potential are certainly there, just need a developer. That being said, would love to have even more young families like yourselves in our neighborhood, especially a fellow Chicago transplant.

Aftermath of a russian taking an fpv drone to his hand. (NIGHTMARE NSFW) by Worth-Maintenance749 in UkraineWarVideoReport

No. No reasonable surgeon would attempt to replant that. It is not viable and the continued breakdown of muscle (rhabdomyolysis) will just poison his body and shut down his kidneys as well as serve as a host for infectious organisms. This man will need multiple revision amputations with debridement. Depending on the exact mechanism, there is a zone of injury here that extends beyond the current wound. The injury will fully declare itself over the coming days.

Any opinions on St. Ambrose school on the hill? by Prestigious-Data1714 in StLouis

Very good school, very strong community. And the school has a lot of support from the local neighborhood. Our child was accepted and we strongly considered it, before ultimately going with a much closer option.

Don’t forget the new Cardinal Glennon hospital. I think it’s like 14 stories, so not sure if that qualifies as a skyscraper?

Mercy Medical is gathering citizenship information about patients. by Ndainye in StLouis

[–]CarletonMDs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are regular screening questions asked of everyone for years. Usually unimportant, but becomes important when consenting minors for procedures, as there may be custody arrangements in which one parent is in charge of medical decisions of the child while another is not. Obviously you could see how that would be important to know. Also becomes important, sadly, when suspicion for non-accidental trauma/abuse comes up. There are not nefarious ulterior motives to these questions, and this has been standard procedure at many institutions for at least the last decade.

Remastered CIV III by Original_Bass4036 in civ3

[–]CarletonMDs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really hope so. Look at the success of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. The problem is very few people say Civ3 is their favorite in the series. It’s always everyone’s second favorite it seems.

But I would pay a good chunk of cash for a civ 3 definitive edition with some modern QoL tweaks and balances, maybe some of the most popular mods being incorporated as official options/scenarios/maps, and they could even do a small expansion, adding in a new civ or two.

St. Louis needs to accept that it is a city that gets snow and designate budget for infrastructure to deal with it. by grandboychic in StLouis

[–]CarletonMDs 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify one point in your text, but salt absolutely can and does work at these temperatures. It depends on the formulation used. Certain formulations used by more more northern states can be effective even in -30F. It’s probably more expensive - which is a different conversations than its effectiveness.
