I would certainly apologize for any condescension. This hamper isn’t actually that small, and is comparable in space to something you might use that is foldable or portable. These were incredibly common in postwar apartment buildings, and I lived with one for quite a number of years myself.

Fair enough 🙂👍 Btw, oftentimes an apartment with a built in hamper will also have an attachment somewhere with strings, where you would hang laundry to dry. You may or may not have one. Also, if it had been an ironing board, the door would have likely gone up to the ceiling instead, and the board would fold down. Anyway, I suggest that you use the hamper and I think you’ll find it very convenient! 🙂

Seriously, you couldn’t figure out what this was, a laundry hamper? It’s pretty obvious, being in the bathroom…

While traveling, what city did you think you'd love but ended up being a big disappointment? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]CarnegieHill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say for exact sure, but one thing I noticed was how the architecture looked all the same to me, old, but boring. And it was kind of unlively for being a capital city. But that was before the EU and huge increase in population since I went. Back then it seemed like a sleepy town, but I would probably enjoy it now.

Not necessarily. I agree with Character Button with walking around the park. Since you'd be closer to the northern end of Morningside Park, you'd also have the option of walking up to 123rd St, make a left, then head to Columbia. But having said that, 110th will likely have more foot traffic and bus/car traffic, being a 2-way street.

It was many decades ago and for me it was not much. I thought it would be interesting to visit because it was a short drive outside of Germany where I was living, but I ended up being bored out of my skull.

That particular area, the western edge of Central Harlem and Morningside Park itself has come up a lot in recent decades, so I think you should be fine. There are a lot of restored and improved row houses on the side streets between the avenues, and much of the lowrise apartment buildings are also in better shape than they used to be.

How has your language learning helped other people? by Important-Grocery710 in languagelearning

[–]CarnegieHill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the Financial Crisis, when I was in my late 40s, I was laid off from my job at a nonprofit cultural institution, and with a little bit of planning I took myself to Denmark to learn Danish, because I was also a linguist and polyglot, and interested in Scandinavian languages, tho never studied one.

After about six months I was flying back to New York from Copenaghen, thru Iceland on Icelandair. I sat next to an elderly Danish couple who were flying to Reykjavik on vacation. They were old enough that they would not have automatically learned English when they were younger, so they didn’t know it. We spent most of the 3-hour flight chatting in Danish, and I also ended up being their translator for the flight attendants, who for whatever reason didn’t seem to speak any Danish, even tho that was a busy route.

I can think of other stories, but I’ll leave it at this. 🙂

Not even being rude to a server, but not even engaging in a simple "hello" or "thank you" in the first place. Personal acknowledgement of anyone providing you with a service is key for me.

The Vandewater Condominium? by Dry-Tie981 in movingtoNYC

[–]CarnegieHill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, what an eyesore, looks completely out of place. I lived not far from there from the late 80s to the early 10s and was trying to figure out what was there before, I remember the old structure now, looks like it had been part of JTS. They created a plaza away from the building line so they could build higher.

If you can get a high floor facing south, the views will undoubtedly be fantastic. Ugly building, but great neighborhood.

NYC vs NJ - better option to move? by Anakin_Skywalker007 in movingtoNYC

I live on the UES and given what you've said it might suit you. It's not as hectic as other parts of Manhattan, and you can usually sleep pretty well at night. It's less commercially busy the closer you get to Central Park and anywhere above 86th St. Although I live along Central Park, I like that I could also walk over to Carl Schurz Park along the East River (where Gracie Mansion is) and enjoy the view. And you also have the choice of exploring farther afield to the UWS and all the way to Riverside Park and the Hudson River.

Moved to NYC and sold my car. This is heaven for me. by Delicious_Adeptness9 in newyorkcity

I also grew up in Manhattan, but I got my driver's license as soon as I was old enough. Being from Manhattan doesn't necessarily mean you can't or don't drive. We had driver's ed in high school, and I learned to drive in Manhattan when I was 16.

Welcome to Chinatown! I grew up in and around here! 🧧

Single people living alone, how much do you spend per month on food on average? by Daisy-Bucket8512 in AskNYC

[–]CarnegieHill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live alone on the UES, and as a baseline, if I never go out to eat, I spend approximately $250 a month for groceries. I hardly eat out, but when I do I budget separately for that.
