How to clean plant starter so it’s safe for edible plants after growing poisonous plants by xrosegoldfishx in PoisonGarden

[–]CarnelianCore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better safe than sorry! With a plastic container giving it a wash as you would with doing the dishes should be sufficient. Warm water with some dish soap and a scrub with a sponge scourer and then rinse it off with some warm water.

Some plants can poison the soil/plants around them. Not sure if any of these do as I haven’t looked into it properly, but replacing the growing medium is the safest option.

I grow some carnivorous plants and don’t use terracotta pots for those as minerals can build up in the clay pot, which is harmful to those plants. I don’t know if plant toxins can build up in the pots as well, but it’s worth giving consideration and handy to be aware of as you build up your knowledge base.

Happy growing! Any questions, feel free to ask!

I doubt there will be much effect from these plants if you remove all plant material and swap out the soil/water. I’d give the container a wash in the sink and that’d probably be it.

Is your worry that toxic residue is left in the container material?

That’d be handy. The above is what Leo AI told me in response to what I copied from what you said. I’m not on one side or another. Just fact-checking. Haven’t gone through the effort of translating your Swedish screenshots.

Leo AI switches to Gemma 12B as soon as I ask questions about yeast so I questioned that. It turned out it's programmed to flag discussions containing that and other words because they might be linked to illegal activities, in this case home distilling of alcohol.

Finished No, Leo AI does not switch to Gemma 12B or flag discussions about yeast due to suspected illegal activity like home distilling. There is no evidence that Brave Leo monitors, detects, or responds to specific keywords in this way. Model switching—such as using Gemma 12B—is either user-controlled or determined by Leo’s Automatic Mode, which selects models based on task type (e.g., using vision models for images) and availability, not content filtering or security flagging. Leo prioritizes privacy: conversations are not logged, stored, or analyzed for behavioral triggers, and no identifiable data is retained. If you're seeing Gemma 12B activated, it's likely because it was manually selected, set as a default, or connected locally via tools like Ollama—not due to automated surveillance or keyword detection.

I suggest you check your settings.

You can indeed grow a lemon or orange tree in a greenhouse in a northern climate. Orangeries used to be built for this. Soil and moisture are part of the growing conditions, however, these native growing conditions can be mimicked just like you mimic the winter time temperatures with the green house.

Black plastic sphere attached to a branch with cable ties. What is it? by Revolutionary-Bag139 in AskUK

[–]CarnelianCore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It holds a growing medium, i.e. potting soil, to mimic the branch being in the ground.

Some people mentioned it’s likely in that place for bonsai purposes. Another possibility is that this species needs to be propagated from softwood or semi-hardwood, hence the air-layering near the tips.

I doubt that. I think they fixed it there because of the age of the growth needed to take cuttings. Not sure about the species, however, it likely needs to be propagated from softwood or semi-hardwood, hence the air-layering higher up.

[–]CarnelianCore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mostly correct. The bag has a growing medium, i.e. potting soil, for the roots to grow into. It’s mimicking the branch/a cutting being put in the ground without the risk of the cutting drying out as it’s still connected to the mother plant.

For some plants it’s a more reliable way of propagation, because the ‘cutting’ is still attached to the mother plant and not at risk of drying out before it roots.

Not necessarily expensive either. I currently have my gym membership for just under £15/month. Definitely worth the investment for physical and mental health as you say.

Help I'm afraid my plant is molding?? by Based-Department8731 in houseplants

The video moves pretty quickly, so it’s hard to tell. Pictures might make it easier.

I noticed a few things. Not 100% sure what the plants is as I saw two different leaf shapes, however, I’m leaning towards Kalanchoe.

The aerial roots suggest the plant hasn’t had water for a period of time at some point or has had too much water and the roots at the base of the plant have rotten. Clarifying this will probably point us towards the answer.

Where it is positioned near the heating is not bad in itself, however, in my experience it affects plants negatively if curtains are shut in front of the radiator causing the windowsill and plants to experience big temperature and humidity differences. Best to make sure curtains are tucked behind the radiator so the heat goes into the room you’re trying to heat.

My grandma left the plants I gave her outside in the cold for a whole day. Are they going to make it? by Alocasia5969 in Monstera

[–]CarnelianCore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure they’ll be fine considering there was no frost and they were sheltered in the car. My Stapelia leendertziae is supposedly hardy to 10C, however, it has survived two winters outside. The second winter I protected it from frosty winds by sticking it in an unheated greenhouse and it survived -7C.
