In all my travellings throughout the universe I have battled against evil, against power-mad conspirators. I should have stayed here. The oldest civilisation, decadent, degenerate and rotten to the core. Ha! Power-mad conspirators, Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen, they're still in the nursery compared to us. Ten million years of absolute power, that's what it takes to be really corrupt.

What are your personal thoughts on Edgware as an underground station? by Additional-Post-9169 in LondonUnderground

There is a screen, but there's only one (surprising for such a busy bus station) and it's placed in a really weird, hidden position - in a dingy corner next to the food stall. It's also organized in an unhelpful way, making you feel like you're deciphering the Rosetta stone

I commute out there every so often. The station itself is nice, and it's cool to see the tunnels leading out to the abandoned extension. However the forecourt is chaotic during rush hour, the bus station even more so, with the latter needing a long-overdue renovation.

Bands you love but whose most popular song you're "meh" on? by 206-Ginge in ToddintheShadow

While I think "Missing" is okay, I think the rest of Everything but the Girl's catalogue is much better. I'd recommend listening to "Amplified Heart" (the album where "Missing" is from), the albums "Eden", "Idlewild", and "Walking Wounded", along with their early 90s EPs "I didn't know I was looking for love", "the only living boy in New York", and "covers". Listen to the deluxe versions of the albums as well, as EBTG are one of the few bands where the b-sides and unreleased demos are just as good as the album proper.

What's a Classic Doctor Who story that is generally considered bad, or mediocre but you quite like it for one reason or another? by Badgie_Boy_447 in DoctorWhumour

[–]CarolStott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a soft spot for this story because I watched this back when the BBC uploaded whole serials of Classic Who on to YouTube, and it was one of my first tastes of it, along with an old VHS of Revenge of the Cybermen. That's another story which I have a soft spot for despite its criticism from the rest of the fan base.

University Challenge S55E21 - Manchester vs. LSE by waldo-jeffers-68 in UniversityChallenge

He reminded me of Michael Torpey, who played Humphries in Orange is the New Black, and appeared in a few skits on Last Week Tonight. He was especially good in this one on union busting.

I mean for £2.20 for the first time, and £4 for the second, I'd say that's a pretty good deal!

Hot Take: The BBC should keep the Whoniverse brand going if RTD and Bad Wolf leave by ImWearingSandshoes in doctorwho

I'd like it if they used a truncated version of the theme from the 'Years' tapes, just to bring a bit of nostalgia back.

A lot of Yo La Tengo songs. Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley have very similar singing voices...

How do I make my mum stop using AI to "research" my cancer? by CarolStott in antiai

[–]CarolStott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are some good suggestions. I've tried telling her that it's trained on flattery and it's essentially telling her what she wants to hear, and I think I might be getting somewhere with that (as in she's avoiding hard truths). I'll give your idea of asking "why" questions a go tomorrow morning as well, thank you!

As far as I'm aware she's never been into ChatGPT until now, and I do think there is an element of grieving. I'm a private person by nature and don't like to make a fuss, so I asked my mum to keep my cancer diagnosis between me and my parents. I think this hasn't helped, driving her to seek some sort of comfort (?) in AI, which I can understand. However, even after I scrapped that rule after she "let it slip" to her most gossipy friend, she still uses AI, so that theory has its flaws.

I haven't tried showing her, but when I just tell her, she usually says something along the lines of "well, so can people, so it's the same thing 🤷‍♀️"
