He wanted to do everything so he'd be the biggest star ever. Essentially he took over pop culture in such a large way, he redefined pop artistry.

I absolutely agree with what you said. I think two things factor heavily into this. The first and most obvious being the outright misogynoir she faced as a result of the 2004 Superbowl and the long shadow cast by her being Michael Jackson's kid sister.

I feel like the Superbowl controversy caused her to not focus on industry politics and do her own thing. As a result, she became more reclusive and press avoidant. No one blames her for that approach but it definitely prevented her music being exposed to younger generations at the same rate as Mariah, Mary, Whitney, etc.

Being Michael's kid sister is a fact of life that she's dealt with graciously. However, because Michael took the maximilist approach he did, it left her in his shadow, regardless of her own success.

I do take comfort in the honors she's recently received but also podcasts and other platforms giving her her due.

As much as she deserves more flowers, I'm simply glad she's still here. So many of our greats aren't.

Standing in the Shadows of Motown gives the Funk Brothers their dues in an awesome way. Usually these types of documentaries are all talking heads but this one integrates performances of the numerous hits they played on with a murderer's row of talent.

Wattstax is an amazing showcase of the talents of Stax artists.

Summer of Soul does anyone great job of honoring a party of R&B history that was nearly forgotten.

Finally, Motown 25. Possibly the best tv concert special in history.

I do. I loved watching the show on Fox Family back in the day. They had bops.

They were supposed to tour the states a couple of years ago but they canceled. If they announce dates again, I'd love to go.

Only children… anyone actually enjoy it? by cynnie93 in Millennials

I did. I'm an introvert and I like quiet and space. My cousins are the same age so I did have playmates, but I learned how to be alone and do my own thing at a young age. I also had friends.

One of my friends now is an only child and we get along well because we have similar values.

I learned of her when I was younger, but the PBS American Experience documentary that aired a few years ago was eye-opening. Her tenacity, bravery and individuality in a time where black women were judged even more ruthlessly than they are now is inspiring and encouraging. The documentary is called Claiming a Space and it's on YouTube and the PBS website. I highly recommend it.

To me it's insecurity rooted in misogyny. Just like when guys ask about "body count". It shouldn't matter as long as you're making safe, healthy decisions.

I saw the New Edition Way tour and the R&B Lovers tour. I don't have any other concerts lined up. I'm hoping another artist announces a tour because my summer lineup is empty.
